So, I haven't posted on here in a while. I was rejected from all of the east coast schools that I applied to (Cornell, UMass-Amherst, SUNY Stony Brook). I was invited to the Open House at UCSD, but I haven't heard anything since then. I think they're doing their second round of admission on March 24th. I was accepted at UC Davis, and I attended their Open House last week. I really liked the program and all of the faculty and graduate students that I met. I was also offered four years of funding! I'm fairly certain that I'll accept their offer, but since I still haven't heard from Washington or Texas (both websites still say "in review"), I decided to email them to see where I am in their respective piles. I'm expecting to get rejections in response, but I'll just be happy to know, since I have an offer that I'm happy with already. Of course, it would be nice to be accepted too... Is it just me, or does this year seem especially brutal in the number of rejections/ schools that haven't responded yet? I guess April 15th is still a month away. Blargh!

Ahh... so that email was from UW I'm guessing. Are you two applying for the MA program or the PhD? I wasn't rejected and I didn't get that email. Whatever that means... I'm applying for the PhD, btw. I already have an MA.

Congrats Ling304! Did you get an acceptance from a POI at UT or was it a message to check your online status (if you don't mind me asking)?

Congrats everyone! Seems like today was a big day for good news. I didn't hear from Cornell today, so it's probably a no from them. It looks like they send out rejections by mail about a week after acceptances. So I'll brace myself for that. Oh well...I think good things are happening for me at some other universities. And by no means do I want to rain on anyone's parade. This process is just so stressful!

Welcome Robertpt! Does that second post mean that you just heard bad news? I hope not! I'm also interested in speech perception (more specifically how it can inform our understanding of the phonetics/phonology interface). Are you primarily applying to universities in the US or elsewhere?

Unamuno: I noticed that you're applying to the University of Georgia. Are you applying to their romance linguistics program or general linguistics? I got my MA in linguistics there, so let me know by PM if you have any questions about the program.

Ugh...someone just posted a SUNY Stony Brook rejection (so sorry to whoever that was!). I immediately checked my online status, but no news. Waiting is making me go crazy!

Remember that you don't need to write everything in a linear order. If you're having trouble with your introduction, write that later. I find that the introduction can't really be written until I'm done with everything else, but I always get bogged down by it in the beginning. Also, I find it helpful to set goals. Say that you want to finish your discussion one week from today. Hold firm to that deadline like your adviser is expecting it then. You can either work on it in little pieces or pull an all nighter. Just remember that you have a deadline to meet.

The two schools that I am most eagerly awaiting at this point are Cornell and UMass. From the results page, it looks like they're both right around Feb. 10th. Of course, I'm looking for the final results from UC San Diego too, but I have the Open House to attend first. Does anyone here know anything about how the UC San Diego Open House has worked in the past? Are attendees generally offered admission, or is it more selective?

I love this thread! What I treat myself to kind of depends on where I get in **knock on wood that I do get in somewhere** I definitely want a Citizen messenger bag, but if I end up going somewhere with snow, then I'll have to get myself a pair of fancy Sorel boots too.

I'm currently out of school and applying for PhD programs, so my advice is limited to my experience in an MA program, which I acknowledge is a much shorter time commitment. I had a hard time making friends during my first semester in my MA program, and it wasn't until my second semester that I really started to click with people. The second year was even better socially. I think grad school can make people competitive about grades, pubs, etc. and a lot of people are used to being the big fish in the small pond, so to speak. Sometimes it can just take people a while to let their guards down. Remember, there is always a new group of people coming in next year, and maybe you'll find some kindred spirits among them. Have you tried getting involved with your school's graduate student association or a similar organization? That might be a good way to get to know other graduate students from outside of your department. I really hope things start to look up for you!

Professor of interest. Someone that you designated on your application, mentioned in your statement of purpose, or someone who would otherwise be interested in your work.

The only thing that I can think of re: interviews/ open house invites is whether nor not they came from the head of the ad comm (they would probably be sent out on the same day) or a POI (then there is a possibility that they're staggered).

I applied to Michigan last year and I never heard back from them. I only found out that I was rejected by randomly checking the website. That happened to another friend of mine a couple of years before me. IMHO they're not very nice about notifying rejected applicants, so I decided not to re-apply there this year even though there are quite a few people there who I would like to work with. Best of luck to anyone who did apply to Michigan though!

Yep, the waiting is pretty awful, because there is really not much that we can do at this point. I saw that someone has an interview with Brown, which is pretty awesome, but I'm not sure if it was on the linguistics side or the cognitive psychology side. I decided to take my mind of waiting for results (not!) by going shopping for some professional clothes to wear to the UC San Diego Open house. I'm definitely looking forward to escaping from gray and drizzly Northern California for a couple days. According to the results survey, it looks like Feb. 10th-ish is the time when a lot of results start to come out. Another three weeks. Ugh!

My MA adviser and most important letter writer had her computer (along with many other technological implements) stolen from her car about a week before my first letter (to my top choice school) was due. I felt really sorry for her, but at the same time, I really wanted her to submit my letter. I felt like such a sleazeball asking her if she would still be able to submit my letter. Fortunately she did, because now I have an Open House invite at that school!

There's also another thread for UC San Diego on here that y'all can check out too: I have an invite to an open house at UCSD, so I've been following it pretty closely. I really hope that I'll be moving down there. I think I want to try to get into one of the studios on campus (which I've heard have a really awful waiting list). Otherwise, I'll try to find an apartment somewhere near Hillcrest or Balboa Park.

I think wlkwih2 means that results for the fields of philosophy and history occur around the same time as results for linguistics. As a side note, according to a post I read on thegradcafe, apparently Feb. 10th is the busiest date for results postings. This definitely seems to be true for a lot of the programs that I applied to. 26 days to go...

Well, I feel a little guilty posting good news, since so many of you are still waiting to hear anything, but I'm really excited... I was invited to UC San Diego's Open House! They're my top choice, so I'm pretty ecstatic. I'm not in yet, so I need to practice talking about my research and do additional research on their faculty (read more articles!). I also need to remember to breathe!

Ugh! aforman1, I honestly don't understand why schools have their deadlines when they're closed! It just makes all of the last minute stuff pile up in campus mail and take forever to get sorted out. I used to work in a pre-med studies office (for students applying to med school), so I have some first-hand experience of how things are processed too. It makes me more and less concerned at the same time about the general, if you know what I mean. Anyway, both of the apps that I was worried about now say that they've received all of my supplemental docs, but they also say the applications are incomplete. I'm going to go with someone in some office somewhere forgetting to uncheck the "incomplete" box, and I'm going to try to put this out of my mind until Feb.

Hey everyone! This thread has really taken off (at least by Linguistics sub-forum standards). I've finally submitted all of my applications! Of course, some of the schools still list my apps as incomplete (but other universities have received all of my docs, so I think it might just be a failure to update their website). I'm still nervous though! I guess it's out of my hands now, so I should just sit back and wait... I hope we all hear some good news soon!

So, I've finally completed all of my applications, and now I'm waiting it out as well. Eek! One of my universities had a Dec.1st deadline, so the results board says that they might contact applicants for interviews around the 15th. The other schools seem to contact applicants from mid-Feb to mid-March. It's going to be a long couple of months. Since I'm here, I have a question for y'all. Two of my universities say that they're missing my GRE scores and transcripts, but another university has received all of these materials (and they were all mailed on the same day). I'm not really concerned because I figure that the universities are just busy and not updating those websites. Am I being too relaxed here? I've heard that most/some/a few departments will contact me if my materials haven't reached them after the deadline, but really, I think they should be there since I mailed them over a month ago, but just submitted my app within the last week. Ok...so I am freaking out a little bit. It's nice to be able to vent with people who are going through the same thing!
