  1. I'm from NYC, and that was a major deterrent for me when deciding whether to apply. I'm currently in a funded MA where I teach a 1/1 and sometimes I find that even class prep for 1 section detracts from my own scholarship. Though teaching has been an invaluable experience that I have overall enjoyed and wouldn't trade, I have to say, I'd love an acceptance with a fellowship year, to have a few semesters to focus more on me. In any case, one of the sticking points with CUNY's funding situation is the travel time between jobs. Even if they help you find work you could be going between boroughs and that definitely doesn't lend itself to quick, easy travel!

JMA, you make a very good point. I know at my current MA program, when you TA a class, a professor might waste any amount of your time they like in meetings. I'm not currently having this problem, but some in my program are. Needless meetings + prep time + travel time. 3 classes sounds pretty bad. Do PhDs ever just get a day job/office job?

  2. CUNY is an awesome program, but I think their cohorts are traditionally large and you should expect some teaching. Amazing faculty though...

I know. This is the only downside at CUNY. Keeping it going for 5-6 years or 7 or 8 is an exhausting prospect. It's the only think keeping CUNY from being my #1 choice. Exhausting as the proposition of a working PhD would be, I'm sure whomever manages to finish their PhDs are like full service combat PhDs.

  3. Started the day with some kind of suspicious hope and now watching it slowly dissipate into anxiety and aimlessness. Sounds like a typical February day to me.

I have become SO obsessive that I looked at the calendar for 2011 to try and figure out which day of the week notifications went out last year for the schools where I've applied. That's what happens when good research skills are not being channel toward a constructive purpose.

  4. I didn't vote because I'm not applying to lit programs, But I wanted to add that when my partner applied to English lit programs three years ago, he had email correspondences with POIs at all seven of the programs to which he applied. He was offered admission to five of those programs (all ranked in the top 10 I think). His emails introduced his researched interests, asked about fit and resources, and whether or not that particular prof would be accepting students in the coming year(s). The profs whose interests closely matched his own were more than happy to correspond. Would he have been accepted anyway? Probably? But the emails certainly didn't hurt his chances!

Edit: Just read this and wanted to add, he was also coming out of the British system.

Thanks for sharing that. This is probably the real point of corresponding with profs, namely to make sure there's a good "fit." Is your BF happy with his ultimate choice?
