  1. I would second others' suggestions that you send out a note to the other schools you are waiting to hear on. Explain your situation, let them know they are your top choice, and ask if you could have information on when you could expect to hear back from them. I imagine they haven't made admissions decisions yet, but they at least could give you a date for when you should hear from them. Once you hear back about the date, call or email the DGS at the school that admitted you and ask for an extension around that time. I have read elsewhere on the forum that schools can actually force you to answer before April 15th. I can't remember the specifics but I'm sure if you hunt around on GC you would find that information. It's a real pain the butt and I'm in a similar situation right now! So I feel your pain. But congrats on your acceptance and I hope that you will receive good news from your other schools!
  2. Congrats to the Yale admit! If you don't mind divulging, did you have an interview? Any other details you'd be willing to share? I feel like I might explode out of curiosity.
  3. She's retired though, isn't she?
  4. Oh, I thought of another FABULOUSLY awful "art history" book: Kimball's Rape of the Masters: How Political Correctness Sabotages Art. It's an absolute scream. I have a feeling Kimball was that student in the survey class who kept receiving poor grades for talking about how "pretty" or "ugly" the Venus of Willendorf is. He thinks of art as "a source of aesthetic delectation and spiritual refreshment..." c'mon now, seriously? My advisor was in a footnote of the book, which she found absolutely hysterical and even put it on her facebook page. Oh the joys of reading the products of overly-privileged, bitter white men.
  5. No, I didn't have an official interview. I don't think they conduct interviews for Penn's art history program. I don't want to go into to much detail for the sake of anonymity, but they asked a lot of questions about my work, how it relates to other scholars' work, if I had read this or that scholar and what I thought of them, etc. They definitely weren't questions I had prepared to answer so I was a bit flummoxed. I'm also worried that I came off too heavy on wanting to pursue a certain methodology, that the department isn't necessarily known for. But they did ask me about it, and I couldn't figure out how to get myself out of that corner. Luckily, it's pretty trendy right now so it's not terrible that I expressed a penchant for it. I just hope I was able to express that I'm not 100% committed to it and that's just been the best lens (avenue, perhaps?) to pursue my current interests. I suspect that I'll be getting a waitlist out of the interview instead of an acceptance. I don't think I did terribly bad or terribly well.
  6. Had an interview today - they asked really difficult questions! I hope I didn't sound like a complete rambling moron. On another note, has anybody heard about when Yale will start notifying? I've heard they'll also be conducting interviews this year? I'm wondering if I should bite the bullet and call the department. However, I've never heard of anybody doing this and being notified of an acceptance...it's usually the other way around. Thoughts?
  7. Jardin and Brotton's Global Interests. Its many failings are pretty self-evident and don't require much explaining...mostly issues of sweeping assumptions, very little supporting evidence for many of their claims, and a tendency to essentialize. Also, for a book that is supposedly about cultural exchange, there really wasn't a lot of two-way exchange going on. I found it very Eurocentric.
  8. Also, raise your hand if after reading LLajax's post you went and checked all of your app statuses...because I definitely did. Nothing! Not even on the schools I've been waitlisted from. My applymyself account remains mysteriously still and unchanging.
  9. Thanks! Those links were really helpful!
  10. Sorry didn't mean to complain! I know that I'm lucky not to have been rejected straight off the bat. It's just that I handle bald faced rejection a lot better than waiting on tenderhooks....And don't give up hope yet! You never know if they notify in waves or not.
  11. I have a Skype interview scheduled with "faculty" this week. I've never had an interview on Skype before, does anyone have any suggestions? Also, where would be an appropriate place to take the online call? (Obviously not lounging in bed wearing my flannel PJs) If anybody has any advice about the specific Skype interview process, I'd really appreciate it!
  12. Another waitlist! Agh I hope this won't be a pattern for the other schools...I don't think I can survive the waiting part. Anybody else in limbo?
  13. I am so happy for you! Congrats, you really deserved it! :-)
  14. Thanks cokholik! I'm trying to stay positive. I hope you start hearing good things from your schools soon!
  15. Waitlisted by my top choice...I'm grateful that at least the first news I heard wasn't a rejection. Although I wish I could have had something more positive. I'm keeping my fingers crossed and hoping for the best...at least I feel less stressed about not having heard from anywhere. Good luck to everyone else!!! It looks like it's really starting now...
  16. Yea, us necrophiles need to stick together!!
  17. What's your field? I don't remember you saying it before. Based on your choice of CAA panels, is it Renaissance? If so, hoorah!! I'm trying to convince myself that I'm not in a dead, irrelevant field despite evidence to the contrary.
  18. Congrats!!! You definitely deserve a treat and I think an avocado would be perfect :-)
  19. Okay, this is going to sound crazy, but I like to mash up half an avocado in its shell and then spread it on squares of really dark chocolate. I highly recommend it, if you're willing to be so adventurous. And yes I'm dying of suspense as well! I feel as if we're all a bunch of old British men in robes and wigs sitting around and grumbling...
  20. I am laughing so hard I am going to pee myself. But how to work grad school into the mix? I'm imagining an episode where we're tired studying for COMPS and the Doctor bursts in, informs us that Rembrandt has been kidnapped and he needs our laser pointer to help free him from the evil clutches of...Jasper Johns? And our admission to the top school of our choice depends on procuring a glowing LOR of Rembrandt once we've successfully freed him....
  21. Hahaha I laughed really hard at this exchange. But yea, detaila please! I think we all are starved for info.
  22. Can we please start an Art History/Grad School/Dr. Who website?
