  1. I got the Kaplan flashcards...theoretically you could probably make them yourself but I think they're worth the $10
  2. Thanks! I'm English and I don't think we have the same system here but none of my recommenders mentioned it - I just emailed one, who is American, to apologise as I imagine the English ones won't have thought anything of it (and were professional). I just re-read your post though and saw that you said contact technical support but on the technical support page it said for changes to applications to contact admissions but now i'm worried i've made another mistake by involving the admissions office. argh!! Could annoying the wrong people affect my chances?!
  3. Thanks! One application let me waive even though the recommendations are submitted and I emailed the other places - wish i'd thought to check this beforehand!
  4. As the applications and recommendations have been submitted I can't change it to waive the rights - so should I email the schools and tell them I made a mistake and ask them to change it, or is it now too late to undo any damage? I have three not submitted apps but one recommender has already submitted so I can't amend theirs, for the two that haven't I can change to waive the rights but I guess it will look even worse to have two waived and one not?
  5. I had no idea that would be interpretation - I didn't really give it any thought at the time. I have submitted a lot of the applications like that though, should I contact admissions and ask for it to be changed? I am not hugely interested in reading them, just thought I may want to if I didn't get in but i certainly don't want to if it will hurt my application chances...
  6. Well you won't get a visa without an I-20 and you won't get an I-20 without an acceptance to a Phd program and you won't get that if they want a valid GRE or TOEFL score and you took it too long ago. So the best thing you can do is look at the programs you're interested in and find out what their requirements are...some may require the test scores, some may not. If you can get into the program without those scores, then there's no reason why it will affect your visa chances - that being said, if the reason you don't have to submit the scores is because it's a program that's very easy to get into, you will have trouble getting a visa.
  7. No comments on content, this is in no way my field but your spelling, grammer and general language could definitely be improved upon - would seriously recommend you work on that part of your essay for a little while (one suggestion: analyzation - I think you're looking for the word analysis). Also you need to add in at least a few paragraphs about why school x is a good fit and will help you achieve your goals.
  8. Ok, i completely forgot that I asked this and about the question and submitted the application with the question blank - so please don't tell me if that was the wrong thing to do!!
  9. Please list, in order of preference (including NYU Wagner), graduate programs to which you are applying.. This is an option question - should i leave it blank? Is there any way other schools could find out what I put?
  10. Haven't submitted the app yet, just wanted to make sure I wouldn't be penalised for not following instructions for having too many recommendations but since they had minimum two on the actual application, i'm hoping it's ok but if not, I can get one removed.
  11. I'm going for public admin which (I hope) doesn't have to be all about going into research either and my SoP is mainly about the work I wish to do once i've graduated...I don't think they're assuming everyone is using the masters to get a Phd, there aren't enough places after all!
  12. I could've sworn all applications want 3 recommendations but i've just looked again at the NYU Wagner application checklist and it says only 2 are required. However the application system let me add 3 (and it only says "A minimum of two letters of recommendation are required"...should I try and get one removed or should I just leave my application with all of them? I don't want to ignore application rules because clearly thats a negative thing but there seems to be conflicting information about whether I should have two minimum or two total?!
  13. Does it make a difference to waive rights to see the letter? I selected no because it seemed like an odd question and I figured if something went wrong maybe i'd want to. Is that a problem?
  14. what was the prompt about nuclear plants?! That does sound complicated!
  15. I agree with emmm on this, no preparation for either essay question - wouldn't even know where you would start, the idea that you would need to know information on every topic in the world is crazy. They can all be answered with common sense and basic general knowledge (i.e. I mentioned that we're in a recession in my essay and I would be very surprised if you weren't aware of current affairs at that basic of a level)! Maybe try reading the economist up until your test - then you'll have a vague idea of what's going on and you can discuss some current affairs...they're not going to ask any questions that actually require specific knowledge of a topic, even if it may look that way. So if they talk about governments looking ahead rather than only dealing with current issues they're asking that you have some common sense and say, no, that doesn't sound very clever. Logically if you ignore future issues you're going to get screwed over, we're in a recession now, maybe if governments had looked ahead we wouldn't be. That's really the extent of it, they're not looking for "well in 1973 prime minister so and so ignored the impending x crisis and then y happened" etc - there's no way anyone could be brushed up to that level on all of the possible subject areas. Really don't panic about it and if you have only limited time you really should focus on the verbal and quant sections, I got a 5.5 in my AWA on a subject I knew nothing about really - you'll be fine!
  16. Well considering you have a very valid personal reason, I would say go for it! I'm not sure you have anything to compensate for the record though, you'll have a full degree same as other applicants - I think if you stayed and did a fourth year with credits that aren't required you'd be put ahead, not left behind if you don't. I'm not an expert but I do genuinely feel that any admissions persons is going to be impressed that you're involved enough in the subject to be able to graduate a year early.
  17. Really doesn't matter if your GRE scores come in after the deadline as long as everything else is there...most schools won't have a chance to even notice if everything's there for a good few weeks.
  18. Oh sorry, I guess I assumed the fantastic opportunity was something you'd be able to do if you take a year out - my mistake....in which case, why the hurry to get to grad school? Is it a boy/girl friend you want to be close to? in which case, fair enough. Otherwise, as someone who misses the easy life of an undergrad constantly, enjoy it while you still can, especially since it sounds like you wouldn't have to work that hard for your final year! Since you're completing everything you need to, I can't see graduating a year early hurting your application, if anything it shows a huge amount of determination and focus not normally seen in a 20 year old and if I was in admissions i'd be quite impressed. On the other hand, as someone else mentioned, if you did stay, considering you've completed all the requirements, you could focus on taking extra classes and doing loads of extra curriculars that would really help you stand out. Can you not start applying and then make the decision about when to graduate later on in the year once you know where/if you've been accepted for grad school?
  19. I think it would depend a lot on what you plan to do for the year off as well
  20. Unless they're sitting there with all you documents laid out making comparisons, I doubt they'd remember all your grades for each class from one part of the application to another...unless it's some hugely important class? How off was the GPA? If it's wrong by a matter of 0.1+ i'd say you should probably contact them to correct, if not leave it because again, I highly doubt they're investigating it as thoroughly as finding that out would require.
  21. Your GRE is only a small part of your application...what will determine if you get into schools are your essays and reasons for wanting to study, work experience and recommendations...speaking of which, how are your recommenders feeling about having to write them for a variety of different programs (i.e. they can't submit the same one to each school) - the public affairs application seems slightly out of the blue compared to the others?
  22. I agree you should call but not to be too negative, I think you'll be very lucky if they'll consider it...
  23. I think you're just worrying too much... I'm applying to masters programs now and my only research experience is what I did as part of my undergrad in psychology and nothing published...been working full time for 3 years and done no research whatsoever (applying for public admin) and none of my recs will even be talking about it...then again, maybe I should be worrying!
  24. If you contact them to ask and they say no, not only can you not submit a new copy, you'll have drawn their attention to something they probably wouldn't have noticed anyway...I would just leave it, on the scale of possible mistakes in your SoP. it's so, so minor.
