List it as it will be listed on any official documentation you receive from the university - ie, list it as an MSc - and just explain why it's called that somewhere in your application if you're worried about it. Some schools award AB degrees instead of BA degrees, which also looks funny but it's basically up to the applicant whether or not they think it matters. The thing you very much want to avoid is the uni you're applying to somehow thinking you are referring to the Edinburgh MA and then thinking you didn't just put an incredible amount of work into an MSc.

A few weeks in to my Masters, the most noticible things are... - Free shit! I get a locker and a printing quota, there's free tea/coffee everywhere, and library books are on a 12 week loan. - Responsibility. I have 24 hour access to three buildings on campus. Also did I mention I have a locker? - Collegiality. I'm invited to and welcome at any of the research group seminars that occur in my department. This basically means I don't have to sneak in anymore, but it's awesome! - Workload. Definitely more readings/problem sets. I'm also more likely to work hard at the things I don't understand (enter formal logic), instead of ignoring them and hoping they go away.

I won a bursary! Two days before class starts! It will cover 10 months of groceries! Aaaaah!

Heeeey guys! How's it going? How are you settling in? I'm finding people to be oddly hard to connect with here, but the academic element is just as amazing as I had hoped it would be. I love my department/program and LangSoc is great and I've already been to a research group lecture and it was so good. Also this city is so incredible - I can't wait to explore the rest of the country! In the interest of collegiality, if any of you are interested in meeting up and having a celebratory drink I'd certainly be down. Let me know and I'll send around a PM. Cheers!

So is it common to show up and just pay tuition once you get there? I'm trying to avoid going to Adams House if I don't have to because I have a departmental thing right before and right after my allotted time to go there to register. Also, that's really good to know about the exchange rate info - I've been having my dad talk me through the options and it's pretty confusing - I don't remember what we last decided I will do for paying I've taken a look at the Fresher's week schedule and there are some rad-looking events! I will probably try to go to several of them, particularly the city tours and society mixers. Also the PG events, if only to hang out with people over 18 years old I'm sitting in the airport waiting for my (delayed) flight to California to visit my family. Vacation has officially begun, and it feels AWESOME. I'm so stoked to be a student again!

BEST. EVER. Also, yes, the conversation was derailed.

IT'S MY LAST DAY AT WORK MUAHAHAHAHAAA! I am NOT going to miss this place. Though to be honest, I'll miss my coworkers and my paycheck.

Is everyone registering ok? I'm not quite sure how it works. I sent in my matriculation form and the scan of my passport, and now in my MyEd account it says I'm registered. Is there anything else we can do from over here? We register for our optional courses once we get there, right? And we are encouraged to pay our fees before we start classes but we can also do it after? I find the university pages on this really hard to read through and never quite get my questions answered. ...any help for a confused American?

In Vancouver (and I think this is pretty standard) you have to pay someone to do it for you. Cheap backdoor operations will do it for like $30 - usually random electronics stores (NOT big box stores but little indie ones) will have someone who can do it for you, or you can sometimes pay your phone company to unlock it, but it's more expensive. I've definitely just seen it advertised in shop windows. I figured I'd answer that question more seriously when I got to it... Also, YES to the memes.

Yay SweetPea! I'm glad that finally came through for you! I'm glad to hear Blackwood Crescent is nice! I was a bit nervous cause there are no photos of it online, but the price and location are right. I have four more days left at my job, then a month of vacation before school starts, yippee! I've got my plane ticket and my bus ticket to visit my family. I've been looking at various ways to get from the South of England to Edinburgh - looks like a 12 hour bus ride is going to be the cheapest and least expensive! I can't wait to get there. How are you doing, Jon? Getting excited?

Dress code for grad courses?
antecedent replied to RelaxButterfly's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
I often wonder about this in regards to piercings. I have my septum pierced and I've been trying to decide if I should hide it or not. I've also been wondering if half sleeve/full sleeve tattoos (or arm tattoos in general) would be a problem as a grad student or a prof. So far all my tattoos are on my legs, but I'm gonna run out of leg eventually There's been some discussion about this in the Lobby, but no conclusions seem to have been reached so far... -
Totally! This is exactly what I've had trouble expressing. It's not just "I can't imagine myself doing anything else" so much as "if I don't do it now I might end up hating myself for not giving it my best shot. I think this might be the best career for me, and even though it's super competitive and hard and under paid, I'll never know if I don't try it.

Bfat, I just read the Willy Wonka quote in your signature and it made me so happy! Relishing in the absurdity of it all is pretty much the only way I got through the last application cycle. I fully expect Nonsense 2013 when I reapply next year -

Amazing. I'm all in favor of formal dress Fridays, even just once a month! -
Also, this. I'm way better at school than I am at my current job.

I always tell people that one of my criteria for PhD programs is outrageous convocation regalia, and they always think I'm joking! I kind if hate myself for this logic, but as far as I can see, the reason I'm pursuing a PhD is that every time someone asks me what I want to do with my life I always come back to "study language." Even when I try to frame it in non-academic terms, or when I project my interests onto industry (huh?) jobs, I always end up rationalizing how it will be almost as good as getting my PhD. I don't know if in this climate it will be possible for me to get in to a PhD program or get a TT job afterward, but if I don't give it my best shot I'll never know. I never though I'd be someone that said "because I can't imagine doing anything else with my life" but...there ya go! I guess part of it is that there isn't much in the way of "industry" jobs for humanities/social science majors. I don't know if I would feel differently if, like for engineers, there was a large pool of (highly competitive) job options.

Fall 2012ers: How are y'all feeling?

*hugs* Don't worry Thunderpaws, there are going to be so many cute PhDs with Texan accents at UTA that you're not even going to know what to do with yourself! -

I'll be 4,400 miles away (two flights totaling over 12 hours!) from my boyfriend - this is one of the few reasons I'm glad I didn't get into a PhD program anywhere! Facing one year of an LDR is daunting enough. -
I emailed allocations, did a little begging and pleading, called them a few times, and voila - affordable housing! Not quite Mylnes Court (alas) but at least I got one of my three choices this time - Blackwood Crescent! So how's everyone feeling? Getting excited? I have exactly one month (aaaah!) until my flight leaves for London, and one week after that I move in and week zero begins! I'm so excited!

You guys, this was the worst. I donated or sold at least half of my book collection. HALF. As it was I had to ship four boxes of books from Vancouver to California, and I managed to store my language dictionaries and larger textbooks here in Vancouver. I was hemorrhaging books for about a month and it sucked. Currently I only have 10 books with me to take to Scotland. It feels like I'm missing limbs or something! Every option just ended up being cheaper than shipping them to Scotland. I would have filled up my suitcases with books, except I've heard I'll need clothes over there. It still makes me kind of sad just thinking about it...

A bullshit thing just happened at work, and I am so regretting getting out of bed this morning. This almond milk latte is almost making up for it...21 work days left!
-
Well, it looks like I might be back on the housing market if allocations never gets back to me. If anyone here has a friend in Edinburgh with an empty room in their flat, please let me know!

I applied to University of Wisconsin - Madison, UT Austin, University of Edinburgh, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, and San Francisco State. I got into unfunded MAs at UW-Madison, Edinburgh, and SFSU. Next time I'll apply to more top-twenties, but also lower ranked schools with strong programs, and state schools not in California (my home state is more broke than I'm gonna be after this year). I plan on applying to between 10 and 13 schools. I at least have the knowledge of what went wrong last time to help guide me
