As I mentioned in another guilt-inducing thread somewhere, I haven't read Macbeth. I also haven't read Pamela or Clarissa. And there's a giant, glaring hole in my "I've read that" mental bookshelf with the 17th and 18th centuries should be. I just seem to have missed them some how.

The flight to LA from NYC is the same length as a flight to London from NYC. Just saying. It's the same country, but it's still a big move. And an expensive one at that.

Although I'm actually kind of excited to start over someplace new! I'm in my mid twenties, and it's time to do something just for me and my career. It's quite possibly the bravest thing I've ever done (which says a lot about how minimal my capacity for bravery is...)

For me, the waiting is the hard part. I'm starting to make plans, but it's not time to act on them yet. Course options for the Fall aren't up. And I know this is the time to rest and relax before 5-8 years of insanity, but resting and relaxing aren't my strong suits. Hence the choice to get a PhD in the first place.

Glad I'm not the only one feeling this way, though you have a much bigger move! Looks like we're both going to SUNY Buffalo!!! Let's chat!

Very much so. I'm trying to see it as the chance to make my own "home" for the next 5+ years. It helps that I have to switch my legal residency to my new state. I really am moving!

I'm leaving my family and my friends from college on the West Coast to move to the East Coast, so I know it's going to be hard but hopefully soon enough I'll have friends and connections enough in my new town for it to feel like home.

Anyone else feeling mixed feelings because of having to leave family? I feel so great that I got in somewhere, but I really don't want to leave those who are close to me. And, I haven't even visited the school that I accepted, so I feel like I don't know what I got myself into--I know it's a great school, and I fit the program, etc., it's just a lot to handle at the moment.

So the season's finally over... We've all had some good results, some bad ones (except our champion onzeheures!), and it's been a very daunting process (no less daunting than the one coming ahead: getting housing, moving -for some of us, abroad-, and actually starting our degrees!)

I wanted to thank you all for your support during this last Spring-Summer (or your Fall-Winter), and to wish you the very best of lucks in pursuing your graduate studies (no, I did not copy this last sentence from all the rejections letters, ).

Good luck! See you at conferences,

Tell me something, why do you keep bringing up LittleDarlings in completely irrelevant contexts? Is there any good reason? Because the only ones I can think of involve words like "trolling," "bullying," or "stalking." It makes me uncomfortable, and I am sure that I am not the only one.

Sucks knowing you didn't get all acceptances. Even Pinkster/CorruptedInnocence/LittleDarlings accomplished that.

Waitlisted by UC Davis today. I've already committed elsewhere and had honestly assumed I was going to get a rejection since I hadn't heard anything until now. It's nice to know I at least made the wait list though. If anyone is waiting on UC Davis I'll be telling them to take me off the wait list to make sure no one does any more waiting than they have to

Thanks! omg, it is a HUGE relief. Not knowing what your life will be like just a few months from now is really terrible, and there are a good few months that you spend in this state of uncertainty (like, will I have a job at all? will I need to prepare 5 new courses I've never taught before while simultaneously reapplying for jobs again next year? what country will I be living in? how will this affect my personal life?). Going on the job market is a complicated experience; it's time consuming and it's very hard to go through even if you are very well prepared. And trying to research and write a dissertation in the middle of all that uncertainty is... meh.  And honestly, I'm lucky. Some of my friends didn't have a job lined up for the next year until July.

Well, I recently got a postdoc fellowship after being on the waitlist for 3 months. Couldn't be happier, and couldn't care less about being waitlisted first (except that the wait was torturous).

Good luck! I will be sending good vibes your way.

Or you could uh... you know, try to lose weight? I don't know your situation at all and don't mean to be judgmental... but if you have to rest after every 20-30 paces you are definitely not getting the exercise you need and should be more concerned about becoming healthier than finding a campus that have seats with no armrests.

Edit: oh and to answer your original question...stay away from Colorado I guess. Lots of active health nuts here.

I followed Fuzzy's advice and emailed the DGS just checking in on the the list and reaffirming my interest in the program. It's the first time I've contacted them since February 24th so I don't think it's too annoying to send a short email just to check...fingers crossed!
