  1. Hey there, Head of the grad program said that he is going to e-mail/call people who get offers right away around March 12. They are only accepting 8 Canadians this year + 1 international student. The Ryerson side is accepting 6, but I don't know anything about their admissions process. They are going to make offers to more that 9 people though, since they are expecting rejections. After they receive responses, they are going to contact their second choices and on and on. The latest they have ever made an offer was July. Because of that, the program is going to be slow sending out rejections. Hope this helps. I got this info from their open house in February. Let's keep each other informed here, shall we?
  2. I'm so sorry to barge in like that on your guys talking about UofT I was wondering if there is ANYONE ELSE out there applying to York? I am applying for PhD in Communication and Cultural Studies. Got an invite to go to an Open House this coming Friday, but nothing besides that. Was wondering what that meant and what are the stats for this program from the previous years (dates offers/rejections were sent out, interview invites were sent out and etc.)
  3. I see. My question is do they really plan to interview people during an open house with ALL the applicants?
  4. Hello, my fellow applicants, Will you please help a lady freak out? So my program of choice sent out an invite to come to an Open House to meet the professors, ask questions, eat, and hang out. They are inviting both their MA and PhD applicants. The invite is for mid-February, the deadline was mid-January. To me, it sounds like they are saying: "You poor shmucks, we've got way too many apps this year. Come and make an impression on us. That's your only chance to be remembered for when we sit down to make decisions." They even suggest Skype talks with faculty members if you can't attend. The invite is for the entire day. What is that?? Should I treat it like an interview? What should I wear? (do I need to show that I am making an effort? As in dress up a bit?) Should I bring copies of my writing sample/CV just in case there will be an opportunity to stick them into the undicisive hands of potential committee members? I want to make the most of it.
  5. "OF COURSE you'll get in. I can't imagine there will be that many people applying to this program anyway"
  6. cunninlynguist, I understand your frustration and thought I would offer a few words of encouragement. The department I did my Master's at fell apart two years after I graduated. They university still kept the programs going, but it is not the same, of course. The truth is, the department that is in that bad of a shape is NOT the place you want to be in the first place: Professors are bitter, students feel cheated, and school is stingy when it comes to resources. It's a GOOD thing that you got your chance out. Good luck with the other three!
  7. Good luck this year!!! Nice to see another prospective "Yorkie" And I know first hand how hard it is to be an international student. I did my Master's as an international student in the States, but can now apply as a local. Hang in there. It might be harder to get in in Canada, but lots of US universities give you diversity credit.
  8. Thank you so much for your response! I will keep you posted if I hear anything. Please do the same! I got my application in so early, because my Bachelor's was from abroad. The department did not clearly say that I should go by the international student deadline, but they advised that I did. They were worried that processing a foreign transcript might take longer.
  9. applied for PhD in Comm and Culture at York+Ryerson universities let the waiting begin...
  10. checking it twice a day. Even on Sunday night, the last Sunday before Christmas, that is. Even after the program posted that it is going to be closed till Tuesday or something like that.
  11. I'm a artist, although I am not pursuing it as a full time career. I am going to put together a show and pitch it to a few galleries to keep myself busy. Nothing keeps me more preoccupied than working on a show. Just working on something won't keep me out of neurosis. I need a goal!
  12. My husband just dropped off my application package at the university. He works right by the school. This is my 1/1. There are only two programs like that in the whole country, and the other one is in French. I was in the midst of a deep burnout last night when I was putting everything in that thick soft envelope. I have misspelled "PhD" in a black permanent marker. In case you are wondering, how one can accomplish that, I forgot to capitalize "d." Concerning the discussion of GPA: I always felt that it was just one of the simple filters to get through masses of applications schools receive. They get rid of the ones that are way too low, but everyone else has the same chances. I had a 3.9 in undrgrad and 4.0 in my Master's program, and if anything, I worry that it was a stupid and an unreasonable thing to do. It sounds like I am not really human. Who would trust a totally perfect score?
  13. I will take my application package to York University on Friday. I'm applying for PhD in Communication and Culture for the Fall 2012 term Anybody else out there applying to the same program/same school? Any ideas on when the results will be posted? I know it is in the Spring, but it would be nice to know an approximate month at least
  14. People, I have just put my writing sample in the folder with everything else. One of the pages with references has a slightly bigger than normal margin in the bottom. Alas, my printer died 3 minutes ago, and I can't fix that. And, seriously, I have no more nerve cells in my brain to devote to addressing the issue of the bottom margin. The whole thing is going to the York University addmissions office tomorrow. It's the only school I am applying to. I am applying to the PhD program in Communication and Culture at York and Ryerson (it's a joint program) in Toronto, ON It's the only program that would work for me anyway where I am at. I cannot relocate. I have a toddler and a husband. Well, let the waiting games begin. And may the odds be ever in your favor.
  15. I'm applying to the PhD program in Communication and Cultural Studies at York + Ryerson for the fall of 2012 Anybody else out there?
