  1. Cool, thanks for posting. If I can make it I will come out for sure. NYU has our open studios on December 1st. I encourage everyone to come to us if you can.
  2. It's not so uncommon that it is utterly unheard of--some schools even offer dual mfa-ma programs--but many schools do not allow you to apply to more than one program. If they don't have a rule against it, I do not see a problem with applying to both. The people making admissions decisions will be different for each program.
  3. Haven't been on here in a while, but good luck to everyone starting new programs or applications. I ended up getting into NYU off the wait list in July! Was very surprising but goes to show you if you haven't heard back don't ever count them out.
  4. Craigslist is the best place to find a room if you don't know anybody personally with one. I wouldn't look more than 2 weeks before you're ready to move in. Things work quickly in NY so looking much before that will be mostly a waste of time. I went to Parsons in undergrad, a lot of students live in BK, many of them off the L train, but union square is easy to commute to from anywhere in NYC.
  5. I finally heard from Brooklyn College yesterday via email that I was accepted! First acceptance and it comes in May. I guess it shows there is still hope
  6. These two programs are really different, so it depends on what you're looking for. Have you visited BK college before? I was just put on the wait list at NYU... so I am really hoping you fall in love with BK lol.
  7. I think this is an important topic and something I have been thinking about a lot the past month or so. There is actually already a good thread about this in the application section of GradCafe you can read here: For me, I would do a few simple things like 1) order transcripts much earlier 2) go over my statement with a wider range of people 3) talk more with the people I know in the field to let them know I'm applying and ask for advice But I would mostly work on my portfolio more. This goes to my next point which is I think I should have waited to apply at least one more year. When I think about it, I think my portfolio isn't in the right place it should be and I really would like to make more work. In the end, I think the portfolio is your main thing to worry about, and I know mine can be better. Good luck if you re-apply. Depending on the news I'm still waiting to hear I might be right there with you.
  8. Oh okay, I thought that might be how they contact people. Thanks for the info! Do you think you will hold out to see if you come off the wait list? Or are you still just leaning towards your two offers? Good luck with your trips.
  9. How did they contact you? Still nothing on my end.

    WAITLISTED?!

Thanks! From what I can tell most schools use April 15th as a timeline to make a decision, but not all schools use this date. For example, I know Rutgers gave people April 2nd as the date. When did Hunter and SAIC give you to decide by? If its April 15th I'd say hold out until then at least. Unless you know for sure you don't want to go to either SAIC or Hunter already, because if you already know you won't go to one for sure thn I'd let them know soon just so people on their wait list can hear sooner.

    WAITLISTED?!

Yeah, I can see why you would be concerned about what to do. You should still have some time to make your decision so I'd wait it out. You're right very few people turn down places like Bard or Columbia, but it does happen. Good luck! I am on the wait list at Rutgers so I'm holding out hope to come off a list too.
  12. That's a great list! Thanks for putting it together. Real quick I can think of a couple of well funded programs to add. West: UNLV (full rides and I think stipends) Cal State San Bernardino (a friend went here and liked it, heard they offer full ride but don't know much about the school) South: USF (full rides) FSU (friend got in here and she said they all get tuition waivers and stipends) University of Miami (they offer some students tuition waivers and stipends but not all) Tulane (full ride) University of NO (I heard full ride, not sure for all or not) East: University of Delaware (offers full ride) SUNY Stony Brook (tuition waiver and stipend to some. Should mention need to take GRE to get it) University of Long Island (I heard a full ride is offered to some) UConn (full rides available?) I'm sure there are more out there!

    Rutgers MFA

Thanks for the advice! I went ahead and emailed Anine just now so hopefully I have more info soon. I think you're right that the wait list is probably not super long, so that works well in my favor. At this point it all makes me a bit anxious because I haven't actually been accepted anywhere, so in my head I am trying to mentally prepare for applying again, but at the same time I haven't heard from two schools and might get off the wait list! It makes me feel like it is the middle of February all over lol.

    Rutgers MFA

Agh! I want to email Anine to see if they have an estimated timeframe for when I will know if I get in off the wait list so bad but I dot want to be a bother! To make my anticipation worse I still haven't heard from NYU which has me worried! Lol sorry to vent I just need to get it out. Good luck to all of you who had to make a decision for RU by today. I can only imagine how hard that is without financial aid info!!

Good luck in Madison! I'm sure you will lov it and make some great work to return to NYC with, or wherever you end up in the future.

Thanks miyamoto81! I really appreciate hearing that. You have definitely been one of the more helpful posters on the forum, which has been a great resource during this stressful process. I guess in the next week or so we can all move on to brand new stresses, the stresses of being grad students! Haha.

All this talk about the program is making me hope even more I get off the wait list. I really hope some people decline their admission decisions soon. I want to go back for another visit soon, I'm afraid I might not get the chance before the semester ends. If I do, I'll post what my experience was like. I'd also like to mention though, being that we are talking about the school and it's location, is that it is really close to Newark which is an awesome city. A lot of people do not realize how many cool places for art Newark has. It's no Chelsea, but There are some great galleries, studio spaces, and cafes/coffee houses. If you go to Rutgers, I hopes many of you go check it out. PM me if any of you want to know of places to check out there
  18. Congratulations on City College! I see we are both waiting on Brooklyn still! I think you might really like CCNY it's one of the less looked at programs in the city but I have always heard good things.
  19. You were notified you were accepted already? MaryAnn told me they wouldn't have decisions until the end of the week. Yikes! Now I am nervous. NYU doesn't have the best of financial aid, that is for sure. I asked about the details of the financial aid at my interview and they said it is changing this year, and basically they offer all 10 people accepted a tuition waiver plus a TA position and it comes out to half off the tuition. Still very expensive.

    Rutgers MFA

Yeah I saw you had a great offer from Madison! If I were you I'd go with that too! I have been to Rutgers but never given an official tour. Maybe I should email Anine to see if I could go check out the studios. One of my professors from undergrad went there so I have heard about it and from everything I know it sounds fantastic.
  21. Well, on the way to the NYU interview I got the Bard rejection email. Was not a good way to go into an interview. I thought it went well though, but then again I thought the Bard one did too! Fingers crossed.
  22. Congratulations! I'm sure it's nice to already have had made your decision and just focus on the future. UCLA is amazing so I'm sure you will excel. You're right, there is a great deal of luck, but don't sell yourself short because obviously you put together a stellar portfolio. If I end up applying next year I'm fairly sure I'll give UChicago a shot.

    Rutgers MFA

Hey everyone, I just found out I was wait listed at Rutgers. Are any of you leaning towards not going? I'm hoping some people who are going other places might make an early decision.
  24. In case anyone else hasn't heard from Rutgers, I emailed them today and was informed I was wait listed. So, if you have not been rejected yet, then you probably are too. To anyone accepted who already knows you won't be going I beg you to please tell them soon lol! On a side note, I am about to ride into the city for my NYU interview. Hopefully that goes smooth.
  25. That sucks about your transcripts at CSLB. Good luck next year, I might be right there with you.
