  1. I agree this work is really great. Love the portable art gallery.
  2. Congratulations to both of you! I had to take a break from posting on here for a while in order to keep sane and put myself together and it's really refreshing to come in and read such awesome news!
  3. Really good post! Yes, all excellent points.
  4. I took the Yale rejection rather hard as well. It is hard not to have it strike a blow to your confidence, especially when it is so early on in the process. But like everyone else wrote, it really is such a complicated process that you really can't think about it as a reflection of your work or you. Yale was my first choice, so it would have been nice to at least interview, but I have other schools that I'm waiting on that are just as good as the program at Yale. The key is to just take it all in stride. I've spent a lot of time looking over the old posts and there are so many people who get rejected by Yale early on, and then later get accepted into awesome and equally exclusive programs. This is all a crazy and stressful process, but it is really nice to have a place like this forum where we can all kind of vent out our frusterations and concerns. It's certainly much too early to worry too much about it and I am sure you will be getting some good news soon enough! Hopefully all of us will!!
  5. Congratulations! Good luck with the interview. I was rejected oh well hopefully some good news will come soon.
  6. Haha I've been doing the same thing! It's driving me crazy.
  7. Some of the schools I was looking into didn't have an official day for visits, they just let you schedule a time to come during the fall term. Others only let you come on a specific visit day. It all depends I suppose on the school.

    New York, NY

For me, I moved to NY from Florida, so it was very hard getting use to the cold winters. Honestly though, I'd say it is pretty rare for the weather to be so cold you need to have layers under your pants. I do own long johns and will wear them out, but like EB456 said it is kept warm inside so you wouldn't want to wear layers of clothes that don't come off or you wold be uncomfortable when you got to work.
  9. Welcome to the forum and welcome to NY as well. I think that you do not have to worry about applying to only two schools. Even though applying to as many as you can is always a good idea, I know plenty of people who have only applied to one or two schools and still get in. Yale and Parsons are two good choices. As far as other programs in the city, I would say for photojournalism you cannot beat what is going on at ICP. I interned at ICP for a while and worked as a TA there and I really support their program. You have a few options with them the first of which is their MFA through Bard. That program is not photojournalistic in nature, and is ran by Nayland Blake, who although is amazing, is not a photojournalist. However you would have access to great classes and photojournalists. If you don't have a specific reason to get an MFA, you could go for their certificate program in photojournalism. This could be a good option for you if the MFA itself is not necessary to you. I would recommend looking into SVA as well. Again, I am not into photojournalism myself so I don't know much about how programs stack up in that category, but from what I see they are a good place to be for that. I feel Yale could work well because their pedagogy cares much more about making good images than falling into a specific category of photography. I could see a photojournalist fitting in there. As long as you realize New Haven is actually about 2 hours from NYC though. Good luck!
  10. Lol I seriously hope none of us get rejection emails tomorrow and all because we made it past the first round. I've never interviewed for grad school (Skype or otherwise) but it seems like it would be slightly easier than in person!
  11. I'm not basing it on science, just on when they started giving out rejections in previous years. So it could not be Friday at all, I was just saying last year on the first Friday of Feb people started getting rejections so it's making me anxious because we might be getting them this Friday.
  12. I don't know this 100% but I would imagine that Hunter interviews for photography because I know they do for everyone else and the way the department works everyone is kind of thrown together as far as application process is considered. They don't get nearly as many photo apps as they do sculpture apps so I would have to think they make the effort to interview based on that as well. Don't know the other programs well so I couldn't say.
  13. Wow that's awesome both of you were accepted and found out today! I am sure having an acceptance early on will help take a little anxiety away as you await the rest of the results. Seriously, congratulations!! From what it looks like Yale will start sending out rejection emails this Friday so I am rather anxious to say the least. Heard from Stanford today that they are missing one of my transcripts. I took that as good news, figured this late they wouldn't email me about it if they already knew they were rejecting me lol.
  14. I applied to a bunch! Probably too many, lol. Yale Columbia Hunter NYU Bard Brooklyn College Rutgers UCLA UCSD Stanford University of Miami All as photo
  15. Good luck! Those are all great programs. I am also applying to Hunter for photo. There are not as many of us photo people there!
  16. Congratulations, that's a great program and getting that far is a big achievement for sure. Are you applying other places too?
  17. By the "studio spaces" do you mean the darkrooms? I thought it was great they had private darkrooms for the grad students, but it was a little sad most of the students use them for storage. I get it though, it is getting harder and harder to be a film based photographer. I think Yale has more of an approach that they are providing you with a context to create work in and it is more up to you to provide the "tools" and space to do it in. But with that said they do have darkrooms, digital labs, and printing labs.
  18. I was really impressed with Yale when I visited. I enjoyed the working community they developed in the photo program. The crits are intense, for sure, but I think they have a really good program. I was a little worried about how I would feel about New Haven, after living in NYC for a while, but I actually thought it seemed nice around the Yale campus. Plus being only a 2 hour train ride to the city means you can still go and visit from time to time.
  19. Haha, I am glad I am not the only one spending al of my free time going through pages and pages of last years forum messages. I thought the application process was bad, the waiting for results part has been worse!
  20. Here's my site. Needs updating but it's all I have for now! Http://www.tysonrobertson.com
  21. Are you positive that the letters of recommendation have to be uploaded through the additional RUID credential thing? I got that email too but from what I saw they wanted just your resume, statement etc, but I didn't see anything about letters of rec. am I just missing that part? God I hope not, I'm with you that I don't feel like bothering my people again. After having them upload so many letters and doing some a second time through Lightroom, I'd feel like a real jerk. It would suck for me though, I was rather excited about Rutgers, plus it's the only school I'm applying to that has an acceptance rate above 5% lol.
  22. http://www.lindsayjoy.ca/Index/Pages/Anxiety_Series.html I really like your Anxiety series Lindsay
  23. I just wanted to post to let everyone know that NYU Steinhardt appeared to be having problems with Slideroom yesterday, and the MFA program was not listed as an option all day. The deadline was extended to today, so if you still need to upload your portfolio to slideroom it is up now. Good luck to everyone with your applications! It was a long and hard road for me, with many speed bumps, but I am now looking forward to hearing back what the results may be!
  24. I would agree they probably will not be counting your actual words, however I think it would be wise to keep it as short as possible. Of course this is pure opinion, but I have heard the shorter the better, and to me that makes sense when you factor in how many statements they have to read in such a short amount of time. If you can make the same points, but with fewer words, I think your statement will be the better for it. So, in the end make your own judgment on if you can really edit it down more, but I would probably get as close to 500 as I can.
  25. I would say that it is also worth mentioning that USF, being in Tampa which is a larger city, has a slightly larger artist community and more to do. Then again, I am partial to Central Florida because I lived in Orlando for many years. From everything I have seen, USF has a really good program going right now and some great financial aid options. PS "losemygrip" I think it is good that we do have some people, like yourself, who are not just potential students posting. Also good to get people from different perspectives posting opinions. I've only posted a few times here, but have been reading the discussions for over a year now.
