  1. I don't think anyone can help you with your query. Best to find and ask current students from your country.
  2. The reference group must have changed. Your test score, 650 verbal, is relative to the current reference group.
  3. I would consider myself lucky if I was offered any scholarship to do a PhD in a UK university. My friend thought he could get a scholarship from Imperial to do a PhD, but couldn't and ended up in Manchester. He even had his paper published in a mid-tire journal when he was still an undergrad.
  4. I will move back in with my parents and do an admin job.
  5. My letter person was like your professor, said he/she will do the letter thing but never actually did it and, I missed a deadline. When your recommender doesn't respond to your emails, give him or her maybe a week to respond, it's best to find another recommender.
  6. I don't think age matters in all subjects but medicine if you are under 35.
  7. In the UK, there is this thing called (postgraduate) diploma. It's a graduate qualification but considered less prestigious than a masters and entry requirements are set accordingly. For example, http://www.courtauld...dha/index.shtml http://www2.lse.ac.u...nSociology.aspx http://www.econ.cam....ospect/diploma/ http://www.lancs.ac....ad/diplomas.htm Or a 2 year BA might be your thing. http://www.ox.ac.uk/...applicants.html
  8. One of my letter people never wrote a letter of recommendation even though the person in question agreed to write one. I missed one of the deadlines for a scholarship. She/he should have said no in the first place!
  9. I hear Goodenough College is amazing and cheap too though all my friends from the UK universities got rejected there.
  10. One of the letters of recommendation was received a few hours late. My application status says complete.
  11. They still have a few weeks to complete your letters of recommendation though.
  12. Did you include a transcript from your current university if you are doing your masters? Some universities don't issue a transcript until you actually finish the program.
  13. All dissertations in decent universities in the UK are double marked. It might be worth having your coursework remarked because the coursework is marked and graded only by your tutor. Some tutors can be bizarre and stubborn.
  14. I did my BA and MSc in England. Just don't convert your UK mark to the US GPA when applying to US grad schools. This doesn't help.
  15. If I don't get in, I will have to find a job too. Just thinking about having to spend all day in a high-rise office building makes me feel sick. I keep telling myself that it's not the end of the world, but
  16. I don't know where you are applying but for Michigan you need to include your DoB in the postal address to Rackham and, SoP title, your full-name, program you applied have to be in the header. They don't ask DoB, I don't think they wan to see DoB in the SoP. It could lead to the age discrimination.
  17. I am watching this thread. I think people need a bit more information to help. What PhD programs are you applying? I once went to the Fulbright commission's presentation in London about applying to graduate programs in US universities. They said 3.0 is THE minimum for most universities though some universities do make an exception from time to time. All universities that I applied seem to want 3.5 for undergrad GPA and 3.8 for grad GPA. UCLA even specifies universities from which they recruit for the PhD programs. I didn't see any UK universities except London School of Economics!
  18. Did you already receive an offer from BU? How come?
  19. I submitted 6/6 applications. I went to universities in the UK so had to put 0.0 GPA in the application forms. Only after I submitted my applications, I realized that I actually applied to some of the most competitive universities in the US. Reading gradcafe threads for the universities that I applied, I am shocked that almost everyone has 3.9 GPA. I didn't even know that it was possible to have GPA of 3.9. That's like all As and maybe 1 or 2 Bs. I am just curious. Why do some people already have an offer for fall 2012 entry? The deadlines for the most competitive universities just passed, 1st or 15th December.
  20. I did my undergrad and masters in the UK and I am applying to PhD program in competitive universities in the US. I didn't go to Oxford, Cambridge or London School of Economics. Americans would be familiar with those universities. What are the realistic chances of getting in PhD programs in the US for those who have been educated in the UK? I have got a mediocre standardized test score (top 20%).
