  1. Congratulations Guicciardi18! All of these three MA programs are really great. This year I applied to Middle East MA programs at Harvard, Princeton and UT Austin, and got rejections from all of them unfortunately. Now I am asking myself why I didn't consider University of Chicago too. In my university there is a professor, who did her PhD at Harvard, and told me that Chicago has the best Middle East department in the United States. After researching into the curriculum and faculty members there, I got angry with myself that I fell for Harvard's name and not applied to Chicago. Also I think that if one of your concerns is money, then you should definitely choose Chicago over Harvard. However, after hearing your career goals in government, I think that Fulbright scholarship is the most valuable opportunity for you right now. Your having experience in the region is much more important than getting your masters degree in an Ivy League school. Moreover, Georgetown is a top-notch school for studying the Middle East. For instance, as far as I know, they have special agreements and organize various programs in Turkey. Georgetown seems to be the most reasonable choice for you if you compare it with Harvard and Chicago in every respect. I wish you best of luck with the decision!
  2. First of all congratulations dltwlf18! You are accepted by three amazing MA programs and yours seems to be a difficult decision to make right now. I applied to MA programs at Harvard, Princeton and UT Austin, and unfortunately got rejections from three of them. Of course Harvard is a super brand, but if you think academically, I believe that UT Austin and Chicago are much better choices. One of my professors, who did her PhD at Harvard, told me that for Middle East and Sociology Chicago is the best in the US. I am angry with myself that I fell for Harvard's name and not applied to Chicago, but I will certainly apply for PhD at U Chicago next time. About UT Austin I can say that I spent there five weeks in summer 2010 and liked it there a lot! The program I attended was in LBJ School of Public Affairs, however I got in contact with several faculty members at both Middle Eastern Studies and Sociology Department. The university is really very cool and faculty members are so lovely. Also I need to say that Austin is a very liberal city, which I have never expected at all before I went there. I agree with others that UT Austin has a quite good Middle Eastern Studies language education and modern Middle East curriculum. While I was applying to these three programs, UT Austin was my top choice. However, after my discussion with the professor, I would recommend you U Chicago over both Harvard and UT Austin (unless you consider weather conditions ). Anyway I wish you best of luck with the decision, all of them are indeed great programs.
  3. Congratulations Khayzuran! Are you an international applicant or American? I don't know when I will receive any letter, since I live in Turkey.
  4. Hey everyone! I have a question for you: I got rejected from UT Austin and Princeton, do you think there is still a 1% chance of being accepted by Harvard?
  5. Hey everyone! Do you know when Harvard will announce the results for MA in Middle Eastern Studies?
  6. Hey everyone! Do you know when Harvard will announce the results for MA in Middle Eastern Studies?
  7. Thanks a lot cooperstreet, good luck to you too!
  8. Actually I am interested in the late history of Iraq and will study Iraqi Turkmens in 19th & 20th century. I am still unsure about whether I should get my PhD in history or anthropology. Since I have a sociology background, I decided to apply to MA degrees focusing on Middle East and improve my Arabic and knowledge before having PhD. What about you?
  9. I really wish to post the same message on this forum in the following weeks, congratulations Safferz!
  10. Rejected from Princeton, as I expected..
  11. Rejected Very disappointing.. I don't expect to receive any good news from Harvard or Princeton after UT Austin's disaster.. Probably I should get my masters degree in Turkey and then apply to PhD in the US. Good luck to you and congratulations to everyone accepted!
  12. Hi everyone! Good luck for the application process! Is there anyone applied for MA degree in Middle Eastern Studies at UT Austin? If yes, have you heard anything about the results?
