Interesting topic I just thought about researching...
Supernovasky replied to Supernovasky's topic in Sociology Forum
Right? Like I said, I have absolutely nothing in my background to convince anyone to let me study this at a post grad level, but perhaps one day after I get my PhD I'd love to look into it. "Brain drain" is a major problem for my state, Louisiana. The thing is, I don't care... I can't stay here. My degree does not afford me ANY earning potential. However, its not just about earning potential, but youth culture as well. There are certain states that seem to be more appealing in terms of culture, music, and progressive ideas that certain members of the educated youth seem to be drawn to, and indeed certain cities at that. -

Obviously way to late in this cycle to change my focus, and honestly, there's nothing I can do between now and next cycle if I don't get accepted to beef up my CV and experience to convince a professor to let me study this topic... But I find myself wanting to leave Louisiana (a state with a VERY low educational standard) and wanting to move to places like Austin and Boulder... Places with much higher intelligence and in many cases, a younger demographic. I know that several states are complaining about a brain drain, a movement away from their states by intellectuals who seek economies where their knowledge and degrees are more respected and offer them more opportunity. Anyone know if anyone is studying this in the US right now? I'd love to read a few papers on it. -
CS had an earlier deadline, unfortunately

I'm just hoping I get IN a grad school.... BUT, my plan is to move to whatever school I plan on attending early, getting a feel for the town, probably picking up a car sales job to tide me over until school starts. Having a car sales background makes it really easy for me to pick up, move somewhere else, and start again.

What's your background? (votes are anonymous)

Interesting... If I could do this all over again, I'd put an extra month into researching things like that. I didn't even THINK to research the grad student's backgrounds to see if they matched mine. -
I am waiting for Washington (seattle) and Boulder to drop.

The half entering with a masters degree scares me. Makes me a weaker applicant, I think, on contrast to them. -
Hahaha... the calm before the storm.

What's Your Poison (Research Methodology)?

Strictly quant, I have a HUGE background in math and started in engineering. -
Last year.

I am literally just drawing a blank waiting for Washington (seattle) and Colorado Boulder
-
Wow, judging from the results page, princeton just dropped a rejection bomb, lol.
-
Likewise, lovenhaight
-
Hoping we hear something from Seattle today.
-
Not so bad. I may throw in an aplication there, especially considering they offer assistantships.
-
I was hoping for SOMETHING from Seattle today. Not getting any word on Michigan isn't that surprising. This is the week though, I can feel it. Seattle shoudl be done this week, so will Michigan, and Boulder will do invites on the 15th... good luck to all, lol.
-
Well, definitely did not expect Michigan... Congrats to those that got in though!
-
Awesome... The more people who applied to Boulder that accept elsewhere, the better for me I am really, really hopeful on this one. Boulder would be such an amazing place to live and study.

Sounds like a really fun event, although it kind of sucks that they had to narrow it down to a cohort of only 4 or 5 students. That feels even more competitive than a lot of the top schools! Hopefully they don't have to do that agian this year.... in fact, hopefully they are going to make up for the smaller cohort this year, haha!
-
Alright, he's not one of my POIs, nor is it my specialization and itnerest, so we're not competing, per se
-
What specialization/professor? I've talked to a few, kind of curious to see if we share any particular POIs.
-
Did you decide to attend there? What was the meeting like? Was it informal? Was it more of a personal interview thing? I'd love to hear mroe about it, I've been in contact with multiple POIs at Boulder.
-
Any particular professor of interest? What are the research topics you are interested in? Boulder invites should be going out around the 13th-15th, if last year is any representation, for the open house. Last year, those who got the open house invites even had travel expenses paid for by Boulder. Really looking forward to hearing from this school. I LOVE the city of Boulder, and I feel like I'd work well with several professors there.

Dude, I am in the same boat as you. To make matters worse, my girlfriend just got a job in Austin as a head QA tester for a video game company. I got rejected from UT Austin. Its awkward right now because I got rejected from UT Austin, and I'm worried about my prospects elsewhere. There's a chance I don't get accepted anywhere, in which case I'll go move in with her and try again next year, while working on improving my GRE and stuff all year. I'll try to volunteer, show some more commitment, and put an entire year into this applicaiton this time. That would give us 1 more year together. In some ways, she doesnt want me to get accepted, but she'd never tell me that. She keeps telling me that she'll support me whatever way she can, even if it means moving in with her if I get rejected, and when I inform her of possible good news for other universities, she seems happy, but I can tell she's not. We both have talked about breaking up if I move far away.
