  1. I am going to agree with Cici Beanz and say that I do not think it is worth it to live in NYC and commute to Newark. It's certainly doable - a monthly student ticket from Newark to Penn Station is $104, which is the same price as an unlimited monthly Metrocard in NYC. I ride NJ Transit frequently and it's quite pleasant; the crowds at Penn Station are not so bad once you get used to them, and there are plentiful trains going back and forth especially during rush hour. Or you could do PATH.

But given the cost of living in New York compared to Newark - not worth it, especially not on a graduate stipend. A lot of people have dreams of living in NYC (including myself) but the reality is often far different from the dream. Popular conceptions of NYC don't take into account that those starving artists/young professionals/starry eyed graduate students really don't make enough to really enjoy the city, especially if your graduate stipend is less than about $25,000 a year. That said, given how easy it is to come into Manhattan from Newark, you can easily enjoy everything the city has to offer on the weekends and on an off day without paying the rent premium for living here.

For example, NJ Transit + the C train will get you to the Met in about 55 minutes (23 minutes on NJ Transit + 28 minutes on C train). From Columbia, it'll take me about 40 minutes - only 15 minutes less. You're closer than some people in Brooklyn and Queens.

As for the person thinking about I-House - I had a friend who lived there for the 3 years you are allowed, and he loved it. For his final years in the PhD program, he's living with 3 friends he met at I-House who have also hit their three year limit - they moved into a 4-bedroom apartment together. I investigated living there my first year, but I think it's ridiculously expensive even for the UWS.

A single dorm room, with a sink and without a view, is anywhere from $950 to $1050. And by the looks of them those dorm rooms are tiny. For just a $100-150 more than the high end of that you can get a small studio by yourself in Harlem, Washington Heights or Inwood and not have to share a kitchen and bathroom with an entire corridor of people. And their apartment rates are a bit ridiculous - nearly $1500 to live in a 3-bedroom apartment? You could find a 1-bedroom by yourself for that much. Hell, you could live in a studio or 1-bedroom in Columbia's graduate school housing and not pay that much. That's the average rent for a furnished 1-bedroom there.

They have amenities, but a lot of those amenities are part of going to a university anyway. If you go to Columbia and pay the university fee, you get access to the gym there, all of the computer labs on campus. There are many dining options on campus and in the neighborhood, there's free wireless in all of the residence halls at Columbia and laundry rooms in all of them, too. And even if you live in off-campus housing nearby, most NYC buildings have laundry rooms or laundromats close by.

Do all the graduate schools have their own facilities at Columbia?

  2. You shouldn't go off to grad school, you don't need more education.

    Why not?

 Because look at all of the debt you have already! Why would you want to add to it?? You can totally get a job now, look at me, I am working to pay off my debt!

 But you work as a secretary for a veterinarian, have a diploma in fashion arts and still live with your parents.

 So? You can probably get your job back at the gas station and then we can hang out more!!! The gas station will definitely hire you with just a bachelors degree, you don't need your masters for that!!

    blank...stare...

What gas station do they know ... you def need at least 2 PhDs and a post doc fellowships at my gas station!

  3. The agony is over! Yesterday afternoon I received an email from the director of graduate admission offering me admission with assistantship! Hooray!

Wish you all the very best. Good luck! And if something does not work the way you would like, do not give up! Keep on fighting! This was my third application attempt (not to this institution, though). Stay strong because someone will understand your real value.

    Cheers!

    Amen and amen! Good luck!

  4. I wonder if that'll be notifications of rejection or acceptance...or both...I hope that I at least make it on to the waiting list! Did anyone out there request an earlier review, receive an offer, and then accept the offer?

I guess I can speak on it now ... I did do an early request (though, as I told some people privately, I did not post that on results page) ... I contacted the other schools/jobs I had offers from and told them I would be going to the Columbia/LSE program instead ... I also notified the school as well ... I still haven't received much in the way of official notification/paperwork so I can't speak to much on that ... however I think I have shared pretty much all that I do know up to this point

  5. W&M are done, so I've officially been left hanging at the very top of the wait list. Disappointing, but IU just gave me a fellowship for my 3rd year (instead of teaching) which I'm considering the spoonful of sugar to make the W&M medicine go down. So I'm headed to IU. I'll talk to my advisor tomorrow before making it official, but I'm decided, and I'm confident.

Congrats ... just don't announce "I'm here" when they yell "hoosier" ... you might get awkward stares

  6. I just spoke with the office and apparently decisions (or at least some of them) should be sent out Friday. This is good news for those of us with response deadlines this weekend. Unfortunately, it sounds like there will not be any funding or fellowship (FLAS) information available.

Apparently, there is an "early review" option which can be requested by the applicant. I wish I had known about that in order to avoid the situation I will be in if I am accepted. It will be tough to choose between guranteed funding in another program and the columbia/lse dream course. Anyway, I hope this was helpful for all you future applicants out there!

What's your other option if I may ask?

  7. Luckily my 2nd Choice had a neat check list on the application letting me know what materials had been received. Once everything is accounted for, its all sent to the AdCom.

I've been corresponding with the department chair at my third choice, he's been quite helpful especially when it came to my portfolio.

And finally, the Grad Coordinator at my 2nd safety hasn't hesitated to let me know if there was anything else I need to submit (ugrd course descriptions, fin aide docs, etc)

I'm just glad I thought to contact my 1st choice or else I would have never known about the missing fee waiver docs or transcript..

Well now just to wait and see right? BTW did you go to FSU?

  8. Amazingly, the second rejection both made me feel better and boosted my confidence. Of course, so did seeing rejections on the survey from one of my other schools and knowing that I didn't get one. :P

mmm schadenfreude ... tastes so good!

  9. So, I got waitlisted by my top choice on Wednesday morning. Then I got rejected on Wednesday night - 9 hours later. Guess those slots fill up fast. Two down, two to go. The agony... lol.

just remember the saying from "the agony of defeat" and of course "the thrill of victory" ... now that defeat has come victory next!
