Late on this, but for those of you considering masters programs, I highly recommend W&M. I did my Masters there and am happy to answer questions by PM.

Social Psychology Fall 2014 Applicants
stereopticons replied to SocialConstruction's topic in Psychology Forum
Thanks for the update. Guess I'll add it to my assumed rejection list. -
Because I didn't get accepted to any schools. I had interviews, but no acceptances. As far as not getting into your top, when you make the choice whether or not to attend the "less ideal" school, I think you have to consider if you could be happy there for the next 3-6 years, if you are interested in the research, and if whatever makes it less ideal is a major issue.

Well, between rounds 1 and 2, I got my Masters, retook the GRE, and got a publication. Between rounds 2 and 3, I worked as both a lab manager and an adjunct professor, and got two more publications. This year, I took a full time lab manager position and started going fMRI research.

This is my fourth round. I'm (maybe unreasonably) embarrassed about that. And I still haven't gotten any interviews.

stereopticons replied to stereopticons's topic in Psychology Forum
Thanks! That's really helpful. Hopefully we'll hear something soon. -
Since I feel bad clogging up the applicant threads with this, here's a PM me! thread (I think we had one last year). Can the following posters please PM me! -Dartmouth (POI and Program) -Tulane Social psych (POI) Thanks!

Students funded "for the first three years"?
stereopticons replied to Munashi's topic in Psychology Forum
I have been told previously that they are not actually allowed to guarantee funding for all 5 years (sometimes not even past the first year) but pretty much everyone gets it anyway. I would ask someone in the program now if that's the case or if it is more similar to what TakeruK is suggesting (you are responsible for finding your own funding for your last two years). -
Can the person who got the Dartmouth interview PM your program/POI? I'm trying not to get discouraged but it's not going well.

Definitely agree with this. Something I wish I'd gotten more information about for my current boss! And hopefully the grad students will be honest with you. I usually ask "what do you like best about (working here/this lab/etc)" but is it also acceptable to ask what do you like least? -
Admission Officers Requesting to Connect on Linkedin
stereopticons replied to Chops13's topic in Psychology Forum
A lot of times, when people join linkedin, they just invite all of their email contacts. If you've ever corresponded with this person by email (even if they just sent you one email), you'll show up on the list of people to invite. I've had requests from all kinds of people I've never spoken to because of this. I honestly wouldn't read anything into it. And if it were me, I wouldn't accept it, but that's totally your call. -
Definitely not you. Typically, some social departments wait until after SPSP to do interviews, though with it being so much later this year, I don't know how that's going to work.

Whoever posted the UNC social interview PM me your POI?

I think I would be more anxious about if I were actually still attending the school or at least working there. I'm four years out, though, and most of the grad students I worked with as an undergrad have graduated. I can see why it's awkward/anxiety-inducing for you guys!

I am, but I graduated in 2010, did my masters at a different school and am now applying. No idea what's going to happen.

William and Mary Counselor Education Program
stereopticons replied to Psykir's topic in Psychology Forum
Sorry, I really don't. I did the experimental psych program at W&M, which is not related to the counseling program at all. -
William and Mary Counselor Education Program

I don't know much about the faculty specifically, but I have a friend in the program and she loves it. -
I haven't heard about UCSB. Someone posted an interview yesterday but that's all I've seen.

This actually happened to me with a prof at UCLA too...then she emailed me again to say "Sorry it didn't work out, can we try to speak again?" and I replied with my schedule and then never heard back again. I decided not to apply... -

I did too...my decision was based on the fact that I never heard back about a fee waiver. -
I haven't finished emailing my POIs either. I haven't even finished narrowing down my mile-long list of schools. Part of this is because my job is totally nuts, and partly because I am unmotivated to start the process again, but I know I'll get it done before it needs to be done. It's hard not to compare yourself to people on the forum, but it really does not help.

I worked in three labs in undergrad.. I worked in one for one semester, 10 hrs a week, then got a paid summer internship with a different lab (less relevant to my interests, but I knew the PI), so I worked in that lab 40hrs/week for the summer, then 10hrs/week during the school year for class credit. During the same time I was working in the second lab, I had a paid job in a lab for 15hrs/week. I'm not sure what my thought process was in taking these positions, other than "I need money and also research experience." But I definitely think that if you can't commit at least 10 hours per week in a lab, you probably aren't going to get that much out of it.
-
I actually stopped listing my study abroad program because a) it was only a summer program, so I only took 2 classes, b.) the classes were not reported to my home university and were not relevant to my degree (or any future degree I might pursue in my field) and c) my study abroad university wanted 50 euro (roughly $65) for ONE transcript. Most schools I contacted the first round of applications didn't care about my study abroad transcripts since the classes weren't relevant.

Social Psychology Fall 2014 Applicants
stereopticons replied to SocialConstruction's topic in Psychology Forum
Hello there! I'm doing this again! I'm applying for what is probably going to be primarily social programs with a few behavioral neuroscience or clinical programs thrown in. I'm still working on finalizing my list and emailing POIs.
