Nice to see some political science chatter on the board!

Killing it this cycle! Congrats!

Yes. However, I'm a research assistant in DC for my day job, also not giving me an optimistic view! Think tank research v. academic research is no contest, I can't wait to quit both my jobs!

I agree. I'm sitting at my desk at my pt job in a call center, I can't believe we extend the vote to these people!

Your second paragraph is very important. I will say beyond that I actively sought social activity outside of my department during my MA because it was just overkill to go to the bar and have a collective bitch session (which is needed sometimes) but I found a community of people who enjoyed the same werido music/art/movies I do and that made school and department friends more bearable.

Is this your Rodney King plea? Well played! No, but in all seriousness, its a difficult situation, (one that I am in as well) but I think if youre not married, or you dont have children all bets are off and you have to do what is best long term. I thought we all believed in rational choice theory and Mearsheimer's "power maximizing"! This thread starting to sound like it belongs in the humanities section. We're all compost one day anyways so go get that degree!!!

Congrats! Waitlisted funding is not DOA. I think that at a place like G-town, some of the funded acceptances probably have some top alternatives, so hang in there. Additionally, who are your POIs? Have they secured outside grants, do they have RA money?

Anyone hear anything else from Brown? I saw one acceptance, my application status has yet to change...

Good luck this week!

Boston College and small programs
Ironheel!! replied to greyhound25's topic in Political Science Forum
Right on with Brent here. I'm waiting Brandeis (a top choice of mine) and it generally has everything to do with what Brent notes. Also, I would add that a small program with a good rep. also seem place well. While they may not place to R1 schools, many small depts. tend to be successful in securing job for nearly all graduates. Think if you graduate from a BC or Brandeis, you may have 2 or 3 others graduating from the department that year (many times fewer) so advisiors are able to really assist you and you may potentially have the entire department helping out on the job search. Not the ultimate reason to go to a school, but it def. played a role in my decision to apply to a few of the schools I ended up applying to. I don't know about BC, but my impression of smaller programs is generally positive if there are a couple people that you could see your self working with. -
We're both getting into Umass this week! But true, I'll most likely be here until April, I feel a waitlist or two in my future this week...

Congrats! I found out via email, I believe letters are in the mail. Whats your subfield?? Also, congrats on Ptt and Davis, you have some nice choices!

Thanks! I'm hoping to respond to Whirli in a few weeks (I'd like to have option too!). Good luck with the final decision!

Just remember, you received admissions to school that had over 400 applications! I'm not so sure an MA is going to better position you at the "top 10" unless there is a serious red flag in your application. I have an MA, and I needed one because my UG GPA was a 2.85 (a serious red flag!). Some may have better info, but it is very competitive and you may not get the "ultimate" dept yuo want...I think Balderdash may have something to say on this.

I would also add that you are well within reason to complain to the head of the department about this treatment. There is enough abuse of grad. student as it is (financially speaking) you don't have to stand for this type of treatment. Believe me, youre not being pushy!

Thanks everyone. After seeing all the results go up and still have only heard from 3 of 9 the first acceptance is a bit of confidence boost.

Very happy to be able to claim U. Oregon! My first acceptance, such a relief to know I'll be pursuing my phd somewhere in the fall, a nice thought indeed.

Thanks for the support. I'll keep you posted!
