I think its a bit of a double edge sword. If you contact them and sound like you have no clue or if you sound arrogant it may not be the best idea. I contacted some of my POIs after I completed my applications. I basically did 3 things: 1. restated my SOP in 2 sentences. 2. Said why I wanted to work with them 3. Asked questions about professional development, RA/TA duties, grad/faculty relations ect. My emails were 4 paragraphs and I received very thoughtful responses from 5 of 6 that I reached out to. Each response very much matched the thoughtfulness I put into my email so I think it was probably a positive move on my part. Not sure it makes a huge difference, but I can't see it as a negative if done correctly.

This is my intended path as well. I will share Profile in the coming weeks. Have only one notification so far, 8 left... -
Umass will be sending out notifications this coming week.

I can claim a rejection from Vandy! Thats the only news I have received. I kind of lost my anxiety mojo the last two days, almost like I don't care...Is it possible that the process can make you apathetic?

Anyone want to claim the early Umass?

Congrats on Austin! Not sure about LSU, I had actually looked at the program (I was considering theory) but there seems to be very limited funding in the program. I'm sure if you got into UT, you'll be a strong applicant at LSU, assuming you put the same thought into the application as you did for UT.

I feel this pain. Other than my Vandy reject, I have heard nothing, and most of the schools I'm waiting on have had no representation on the survey board, so at least I can't go negative on just yet!

What is discriminating is the fact that it costs $160 to take the test and $23 to send score reports. The test is cash cow while also being one of the least predictable indicators of a students ability.

Paul McCartney just sat in an ashtray and wrapped himself up in a gum wrapper when he was shrunk in the movie "Help." Not sure this helps at all, but you could do what the Beatles did in Yellow Submarine when the Blue Mennies were attacking, "how you getting out of that blender?" "By SINGING!" Then sing a bar of All Together Now and walk out. Youre guaranteed to be selected for the "random" drug test in week one if you get the job.

Just strange given the quality of applicants UM is attracting. They'll need to step up the $ if they are going to get students to matriculate who also have offers at other schools with better funding. 11K is a joke. For anyone who has not TAed, 11K will probably qualify you for the SNAP/EBT programs. Also, its taxed!

Thats seems low. I got funding at my MA and received about 12K + tuition for my TA and that was at a low-tier state school. 11K would be nearly impossible to live on.

I applied political science but the "Complete-Ready for Review" is so annoying. It's been that way since December when I fniished my application! Its just taunting me at this point.

You are spot on. Hell, I don't have a safety school, I applied to places I wanted to go regardless of rankings. I am a bit older and feel I have a slightly different perspective. I took a few years off and went back and got an MA, now trying to move up the food chain to the Phd. It just depends on what you want to do in the future. I'm happy to be a small fish in a massive sea so long as I can eventually teach, develop curriculum, advise, and do some research on topics that I am passionate about.

I don't think a 3.8 MA GPA and a 1300ish GRE is going to knock you out of the running, but you will need a solid SOP and letters. My stats are similar except my MA GPA is a tick higher and my UG GPA is quite a bit lower. Hang in there.

I think the law grades will not kill you. I mean, many law schools have a 2.5-2.75 GPA min. just to remain in the program where MA/Phds its generally 3.5plus. I imagine that a if you graduated from law school this will prove testament to your ability to take on a significant work load.
