  1. As an applicant with a shit UG GPA and a high MA GPA, I hope you are correct.
  2. Congrats on the acceptance! Georgia is a fine program. Good luck with the rest of the applications. I have yet to hear from any programs so I'm going a bit mad at this point. Keep us posted with the other programs and funding options.
  3. Congrats to all those who have been accepted so far. I thought I'd start a thread for anyone who is not waiting to hear back from Stanford/Duke/UCLA ect. It can be difficult to gain perspective for the mid-tier/lower-tier dwellers in this forum, so where are you awaiting decisions, where are you excited about hearing from? I'm waiting on Brandeis, Umass, Uconn, Oregon all for IR. Anyone else applying to these schools?
  4. Congrats on Vandy. No official rejection, but would be damn nice to get some word from some place!
  5. Anyone else hear from Vandy? Also, to those who were admitted, did you have a phone interview? Congrats to all!
  6. I think you made the correct decision. I did the same thing. I finished my MA in May 2011 and decided to take the summer to complete applications rather than finishing a thesis and applications at the same time. Its already a stressful process, best to have additional time and mental space to devote solely to applications. Good luck next cycle. I would suggest paying attention to the SOP threads. I found those most helpful and from all accounts, (depending on where you are applying) a solid SOP is what is going to separate you from the pack at the most competitive schools and will bump you into consideration if you have any red flags in your application (ie; some low grades or lower GRE). I also think having an MA will be helpful, it is impossible to really say "I have a strong SOP" but I think at least having a thesis under your belt (plus all the additional questions that inevitably arise when doing research) you will have a very focused research interest section in the SOP. Good luck in the future!
  7. Read The Sound an the Fury. Part One of the book will make more sense then the charts/figures in that article!
  8. How dod you know this?
  9. you know the season is getting to you when you refreash your spam folder...
  10. I second this. I have heard zipo.
  11. Thanks. Vandy's not my number 1, but I was a bit bummed, thought I had a nice fit with a few profs in the dept. Oh, well, maybe after some of the varsity players decide Vandy is a backup it will open some openings for the JVs.
  12. Any news about Vanderbilt? As someone who was not invited for a phone chat, I am curious if anyone spoke to their POIs and if there is a timeline for decisions.
  13. WHAT! You havent started calling! Balderdash ran out of time last year. Stanford only took in applicants who called over 100 times...
  14. A. You'd have to spend 5+ years at Duke; yikes! B. Big Ten basketball is far better than the ACC or the SEC. C. See (A) D. Be grateful that it's Feb 1 and you are in at a great school. Plus Madison is by far the superior town!
  15. Thanks for the link.
  16. @BobbyZimmerman/Clean Cut Kid aka Adornopolisci2012 I'm a big Dylan fan! But yes, I am of the disposition that no school is a safety. I guess I'm trying to get a sense of how many are applying to the 40ish schools. Are they getting 200+ too!
  17. Congrats to the people who have received letters, however, I am curious if there are others, like me, who are not applying exclusively to the top 15. I applied liberally, due to my colorful UG record, and I'm trying test to see how many people on this thread are applying to mid-tier programs. Its hard to gauge what gets you in at a school like UCSB when the results page from last year shows 4 results and no GPA/GRE info. Obviously CHYMPS are getting 200+ applications and the results page shows a good portion of the results, so you can form a very hazy picture of what got in. Anyone else in my position where they just have no idea what gets in and how many get in to schools in the 30-50 range?
  18. Care to share where you got in? I applied to a wide spectrum of schools. I think my rankings run 15ish-70!
  19. I'm not completely sold on the idea that no phone interview= rejection. Lot of factors that could lead to a phone interview.
  20. Just curious, as I applied to Vandy as IR and have note heard...err! Oh, well, was one of the POIs Mattes?
  21. How do you know this? Was it discussed when you received notice for an interview? Seems a bit odd that any POI or committee member would tell an applicant that type of info.
  22. Opening day tickets at Fenway Park and/or a long weekend trip to Spring Training!
