Actually I would think those softer qualities would add value, just not as easily measurable to us as non-adcomm members. Based on my experience with college admissions in general, soft factors can make some of difference in numbers because they make an application unique and worth exploring, although it isn't to say that 3.0 with amazing soft qualities will get into NYU.

I know that my application has been strengthen by what I have seen on here. I did freak out at all the 4.0s and 1200 gres, but slowly understood that my application, far from perfect, is a good one too. People want measurables and that is not exactly where I shine the brightest. Based on just a causal perusal of the entire forum, there seems to be a slant towards people applying to top tier programs in general and a bit of poo-pooing of people not applying that high up the ladder. I feel here I am not well received due to my theoretical bent, which is honestly belittled in the Top 20 anyway. Although hopefully I am solving that issue, by changing disciplines, although that is one of the many things. I can see where there would be a positive benefit of the collective freak out about waiting in general, but I am starting to think that grad cafe is where we compete, which true we are, rather then collectively coming together and become fellow colleagues. :/

Hi, so I am thinking about switching back to anthropology after a few years in Sociology and was wondering if there where I could apply for my MA for Fall '12 (I know I am a bit late). I keep finding a lot of Ph.D programs, but only a few MA programs, so I am lost on where to look. I am looking to do religion/Christianity, colonialism, hybridity, sexuality, and technology with contemporary US as my region (so far). (I don't know if interests matter at the MA level). Of course this up in the air until I can hear back from my Sociology programs. At Santa Cruz I can take an emphasis in Anthro, so it might negate all of this.

I would assume grad students don't finish because they get too drained, found they don't like academia, can't stand to be in school that long. Despite starting with the best intentions, life happens.

One rejection from my top choice (I didn't get a phone call so I am assuming I am not in the tiny cohort) and well, I am doing fine. I am disappointed, but considering they only took 2% I am in good company and honestly, it is not about me or anything like that. Normally I am torn up, but this season has me taking the scenic route and I might actually switch disciplines, so I am on the right path to get my ph. d. in what ever field I end up in. @all don't get discouraged, the top 20 are hard to crack and everyone, including 4.0s, get rejected. Take deep breaths and push on. If you aren't going to apply to MAs, go into something related to your research, it will look better for next cycle! I know it is cheesy and easy to give advice, but think a little about it. Also take a break for a while after the cycle is done and when you are emotionally ready to go back applying to schools.

I am dying too because I haven't heard either way.
-
I would wait to call it a rejection. This could be just the first wave and usually they seem like they go on for one or two days so we could hear tomorrow.
-
Haven't heard anything. T.T Guess I didn't beat the odds. At least I have ~390 others in the same situation.

Saw UMass Amherst acceptance on the survey. Anyone want to claim it? Could you talk about the visit day or any details?
-
GAH! Still waiting for that phone call! Wonder if they will call tomorrow, tomorrow is a lucky day!
-
I don't know where I saw that so I am sorry about misleading you guys about the spots. Still two spots taken!
-
the one on the results page is domestic. 6 spots left!

OMG! I thought Amherst was next month! I hope I hear on the 18th, 21st or 24th, those are my lucky days!

If I ruled the world!/was on an admissions committee...

I have it from an adcomm chair that there are people that take it seriously and then there are people that don't on just one committee. I think it will mirror the SAT where certain schools are starting to make it optional in most cases, but that will be a few years down the line. -

All of this assumes that everyone on the job market are just grad students. We also have to worry about professors wanting to move, or those who hadn't found job after they graduated a few years back when the market was worse. We should also look at projections for around 2018 given the fact we aren't going to be on the market until then. Based on the general trends of academia according to the chronicle of higher ed, adjunct hiring is growing and tenure is starting to fade, so these are what we have to look forward too. Top 10 might get you a tenure job, but it is no way as secure as Epic makes it sound. -

SoP and Writing sample - looking for fresh approaches, ideas and theories. I would take out the GRE entirely, I think it is not a good representation of someone's ability for thinking and writing. All it shows is well you preform on standardized tests. Admittedly I did terrible on it, and tried to study for it, but still got the same score as my previous attempts. -

This of course relies on if tenure actually exists for junior faculty by the time we enter the job market.
