  1. um I think. I applied to princeton and Northwestern and got rejected. I think that the programs i'm most attracted to often are sort of liberal/radical-ish/activist minded (hence why I applied to ucsc), which I noticed to be ranked lower for some reason. Although I did apply to NYU so hopefully that will follow through. I looked at Yale and didn't see anyone that I really wanted to work with. When I think of the Ivies/top 20 I don't really see myself. My grades are okay(3.4 overall and 3.5 major at a top ranked liberal arts), but my GREs were terrible. Also I just get scared off by my own anxieties, so it limits me in that way and I really hate it and trying to course correct. Also my professor talked a lot about having a MA to be really competitive at the Ivies/Top 20. It could be different for Sociology, since he was trying to steer me to Religious Studies. I do get scared off by "red states." It is hard to really figure out feel through the websites and with no real guidance. I was thinking about Perdue, but I found the fact there wasn't a gay bar close and I really want some place to hang out with my peers off campus. i also read about the undergrad population (nothing about grad) and didn't seem to like the general atmosphere.
  2. my thing is that true psychics don't ask for money so I wouldn't pay the $100. I think I would use one just to speed up the process, but another part doesn't want to find out from a psychic and would rather hear from the department instead.
  3. I do research on qualitative methods. So it is tough to find a program that has qualitative methods as a focus, especially at the lower ranks. All the schools that I have applied have someone doing research in the field, although it limited where I could apply. I haven't done much quantitative research, although I understand, at least, the regression models and would like to do some work with them, mainly in content analysis.
  4. I started one too, it has been great to fine tune my interests. My posts are rough, but the ideas are there at least. http://taggingreflection.wordpress.com
  5. My pen of choice is Uni's Super Ink. Writes with the perfect size (.05) and I love the rich black of ink pens. I hate the ball points that have the ugly metallic ink. The one drawback is it can smudge if you rub it right after writing something.
  6. two different situations: "Top liberal arts school, decent GPA, although it is not honors. His GREs are terrible, but his recs and SoP are excellent. Plus he is an amazing fit. Let's put in the yes pile" "Hahahaha his GRE score are terrible and he didn't get honors. His WS theory is stupid and well he made a grammatical error in his SoP. Never in a million years."
  7. sorry, didn't even think about that, usually I remember when writing though.

    Claremont, CA

I went to Pitzer for two years and loved Claremont. I really liked the Village which is a small shopping district. I assume housing is really expensive in Claremont because it is a really nice area. The schools are located right at the border of Claremont and Upland. I wouldn't say the area is horrible, but it really isn't that bad. There is a mall and big box stores a few miles east in Upland. There are also two "luxury" apartment gated communities right at the border. It is a 15 minute walk to Pitzer and CGU is on the other side of the campus, so you might want to get a car. I don't know the specifics on cost, but I am sure they are reasonable for a grad student/family. They have 1-3 rooms, kitchen, all appliances included, a small gym, pool, and barbecue place. I know the 2 bedroom have two bathrooms. Also the small bedroom can hold two twin beds. One of the bathrooms is connected to the master bedroom and there is a walk-in closet. The one I stayed at was College Park because there is a housing shortage on campus. All students, however, have to abide by College Park rules. I also took a class at CGU as an undergraduate and know some of the religion faculty from CMC and can tell you they are wonderful professors to have.
  9. UC Santa Cruz NYU UMASS Amherst I applied to only three because I focused heavily on places that I would feel comfortable and not places I would feel very uncomfortable being gay, so that limited my search. Also I tried to pick places that would be lower then the top 20. Although NYU is a great fit for me so I am taking a chance. MA programs Brandeis* Boston College Fordham* Fordham and Brandeis are late enough that I will no doubt hear from at least UCSC beforehand so I might not apply. Qualitative Methodology/Media Studies (emphasis on Internet)/Religion
  10. Amherst, NYU, and Santa Cruz (possibly working outside the department though). I am going to apply to Boston College for the MA program, although I am not sure that they have a strong focus in the Sociology department, although it is a Catholic School. I am also thinking Fordham for the MA too. I didn't want to apply to Purdue, even though the program is really good. I really focused on places I would be comfortable and they don't seem to be LGBT friendly. What area do you guys focus?
