  2. Like my professor said, everything is political.
  3. I see myself as contributing a praxis-based research methodology based in Paulo Freire's theory of dialogue. With the university under question, I think that the disciplines will start to take on more applied/activist undertones which will be both the result and cause of the fading boundaries between disciplines. Again I see myself contributing to this as I am borderline transdisciplinary and see the way to promote innovation in thought through the breaching of the boundaries of the traditional academy, which both Friere and Lefebvre discuss in their works. Only with this applied/activist undertone in place can academia can justify its primary goal of education and critical thinking to the masses, although there will always be haters. I think that our generation (late X, Early Y (so far)) really is the generation that is embracing the postmodern, post-what have you, postions that were started by the Boomer's parents. Boomers enjoyed some of the excesses of modernist thought, but as we see with the Occupy movement, we are getting the short end of the stick and we are pissed off. I think our generation can and will hopefully embrace our revolutionary ideas for the betterment of society. I want to be apart of this movement badly and i think i will be part of the change in American sociology. I feel I have more to say, but I said what I generally think.
  4. yeah when they just ask for a gpa i gave them my whole college career's gpa, three schools worth. which included my semester of doom.
  5. I know NYU and I think UMass Amherst, Princeton, Northwestern, and UCSB.
  6. I have a feeling I applied to your department and not looking forward to the wait, although if I get it on 03.24.12 then it should be amazing news. While I am freaking out about waiting forever for one response, things should be coming out in two weeks (15th or so). If you don't get in this round, you have options like getting your MA or taking courses at UT-A in the department, so they get to know you. I know that I can't say the magic words to make you feel better, so take a day off and just forget about grad school. That is what I did after being rejected the first four times and then the fifth time. I found I was even more motivated to get into graduate school each time. Sometimes life needs to happen before everything goes our way.

  8. I love how I am finding good programs after the fact. But that might give me better options if I don't get in this round *knock on wood* Chuck, I am borderline transdisiplinary too. I border Sociology, anthro, and religious studies, which are the subjects that my LORs are in and exactly what I majored in (hippie school with special majors). In part, I try to because it limits the exploration of new ideas in the field. Hopefully that will make me stand out.

  10. This what I personally say, but then again I'm a sociologist, "Down with quantitative methods!"

  12. While I would say that no doubt the program is good, there is a level of prestige that is outrageous.
  13. The results are not significant, but failure is always an option.

  15. Well, I tend to get scared off easily and doubt my abilities often, which is no doubt why I don't tend to apply to top-tier schools. It is a curse that a B+ personality has to deal with. Although I am relatively calm and have high hopes for my chances even based on the acceptance rates for NYU. I am also basing this off how there is a backlash at UG institutions in terms of tuition and support when they rank in the Top 10 of expensive schools. Sure different situation, but semi-similar. idk
  16. Like they wouldn't get as many apps because people would assume it is too high of a risk to apply. So instead of 460 they get 400 applications. Still not very good chances but enough to make a difference.

  19. I wonder if there is any backlash against the schools that had outrageous numbers last year, like NYU.
  20. I take an interdisciplinary, that boarders transdisciplinary, approach to my research so it is comforting knowing that is starting to become a trend within Sociology. One of my mentors at my UG institution said schools somewhat prefer people to have the MA, rather then go straight from their BA, granted he is in Religious Studies. This is why I didn't apply to Boston U and a few other schools because everyone at the Ph.d had a MA from another institution.
