Did anyone else applying to UMich get the email on funding today? Its not entirely clear what we are supposed to do in response to it, since most of the fellowships in the list (or at least the ones I qualify for) require department nomination... Does anyone else have a better idea of what the deal is? Thanks! -

i would not take a positive response as "you're in! just send in your application"... my impression is that most profs encourage you if your interests vaguely align with theirs and/or the department's so that they can see more material from you. -

You also might want to consider the fact that cost of living in the UK, in general, and particularly in London is much higher than in the US. Just as a ballpark Cambridge (similarly expensive city) estimates cost of living for a year to be around £10,313 for someone living very frugally...

to the results page UPenn poster- How did you find out this info? I'm not sure if I've been rejected or waitlisted... Do I need to contact the department or is an email on its way? Thanks!

I am a senior right now. After receiving a few rejections, I met with my faculty advisor. Apparently people who go straight thru from undergrad are much more likely to take longer to finish because they have a tendency to burn out. So, if schools have limited funds, they will likely preference someone who has some "real world experience" under their belt post-ug because they will not have to fund them for so long etc. I don't think its necessarily that other people have Masters degrees. In fact, many schools won't accept Master's degrees from other institutions (e.g. my advisor has an MPhil from Cambridge and was forced to "redo" a masters at the school where she got her PhD).

Also going crazy in this waiting game. 3 rejects, 3 to go. Just enough to knock the wind out of my sails, not enough to let me give up hope and come up with a realistic plan for next year. I've started guitar lessons, joined a spin class and a pilates class, and started doing the Insanity workout program. And somehow I still spend 75% of each day refreshing my email. puh.

hey "oceanmetland"! I was similarly paranoid about my spam filter before I heard back from places... I've been rejected from two different places. Neither rejection was reflected in the online application (one was using the "applyyourself" program and the other was via the school's own website). Each came in an email that had an attachment pdf letter, so i don't think its likely to be filed as spam. Best of luck! Don't worry, they're probably just taking their time putting together an amazing funding package for you

no offense or anything, i'm definitely new to this process, but your post was entire about you. i've gotten the impression that its essential to make a connection with faculty members in the programs you apply to and to ensure that you are a good fit in terms of working with them and within the department. i think sometimes they are less concerned with how "stellar" you are and more concerned about the kind of contribution you would make to their community.
