It took me 13 years (and I dropped out twice) but I got into every program I applied to. In my case, I honestly believe everything came down to fit, as well as showing that taking my sweet time figuring out what I wanted to do and making it work was worth it in preparing me for what comes next. Or, I'm on some sort of Truman Show like set-up and everything was rigged because I'm an unwitting TV star or something. Bottom line: do what you need to do to be the best student AND person now AND when you finish.
Agreed. I took 8 years, largely due to health issues. But I did finish cum laude in the end. I think my main issue last year was how horribly I addressed this. That is, don't use a third of your SOP to explain it. Just say it happened, it sucked, and how it's fixed or addressed. If you're a good fit and worked to sort it out, faculty won't look down on you for having problems. But they will look down on you for obsessing about your issues to the detriment of your file. Also, I think over-sharing can be the death of an application.

Looks like someone has a decision to make. Congratulations! I received emails from two schools today. One was asking me to set up a time for a phone conversation (the same school which asked for official documents after app review). The other is flying me out to campus for a third interview. No funded offers yet, but I am starting to feel optimistic again. All right, guys - it was a good sign after all! I just got an email from the school accepting me!- MSW13, RubyBright and iphi

A confirmation that they sent the transcript from my college PE courses that I took in 1994. I cannot tell you how much I wish that were a joke, lol.

I guess I'm having a moment today. Overwhelming feelings of insufficiency and what-the-hell-am-I-doing-ness. No more decisions yet, either. Sigh. This needs to be over soon. Also it's too early in the damned morning to be introspective.

^^^ This. But I also wish I would have started at University instead of the community college. I graduated cum laude, and I would have been magna if my lower div coursework had counted.i wish i had your problems. -
Apparently I used up my quota of upvotes, but congrats!Ok, just had to share this "omen" of sorts...got accepted to HGSE!! ( that's not the omen). They issue you a Harvard ID number....it is all "sets" numbers that have direct meaning for me! I already have it memorized! -

Amazingly, I didn't apply to any of those programs. Geoscience programs seem to be running late (just like last year), though... if that's any help. Oceanography and Marine Sciences seem to fall at the back of that. I have heard from a few programs, but as far as I know, only one of the 7 that I applied to has made a formal decision.

Mine's from my martial arts studies. It's Cantonese and roughly translates as "open hand." It's also two words for saint stuck together, but that wasn't my intention, consciously anyway (lol).

Ughh. Lol. Thanks for fixing this, 13cs!A lady never tells. A gentleman never asks. -

Lol, yes no sadists, please. I hope you're right.I would totally take that as a positive sign! They only want the official stuff if they are going to extend you an offer! Fingers crossed that they aren't sadists! -

Am I the only one who feels that this poll seems pretty lopsided? Where are the 35-40, 40-50, 50-60, 65+ or 75+ categories? It's not like people don't go for their Masters or PhD at those ages.

After last year, I look at it this way: there's hope until April 15th. Anything can and does happen before that. But if that date passes, and you haven't heard anything, you should be looking at plan B.

That was my intuition as well... that they don't need official transcripts to reject. I hope, anyway.I would assume it's a good thing-I mean why would they want your official transcripts if they've already ruled you out from your official? -
I'm assuming it's a good thing when a school which already has your unofficial transcripts emails you requesting official ones. And if it's not a good thing, it's still a "thing" right? As in, some sort of action requiring an official transcript is about to be taken? Commencing panic phase 2.

I'll third the temp agency thing. I'd say it's perfectly acceptable to tell them you'll be leaving, though. I've done it before when preparing to move. They're there to supply temporary help. Idk what area you're in, but I've had decent luck with both Robert Half and Kelly Services. It's not always the best job, but it's probably the best bet for you to make decent money. They usually pay well above minimum wage if you're remotely skilled. I'll probably be calling them up myself once the semester ends.
