I had abandoned all hope and ruined what was supposed to be a nice dinner with my boyfriend by drinking too much at the restaurant and breaking down and crying about my surely-fated admissions failure last night-- and then I just got into Rutgers! Hang in there, all! These weekend notifications happen and the game is far from over for most schools! -

Well played, Trip, well played! Somerville is lovely- I am wishing you best of luck with Tufts! And the big allusive H remains up in the air. I will toast to the B-town and the Charles tonight. -

Charlie's Kitchen: best mozz sticks and friendliest waitstaff ever. They also have Boloco going for them and that awesome falafel place... -
I am going to vomit. Need to escape work and go home for whiskey times.

Philip Larkin's Jill, one of his two extended works of prose fiction. It is wonderful to trace some elements of his poetic style shimmering under the surface of his early prose!

Glass half full?

Margaritas is bomb! I went there to celebrate undergrad graduation, and I got my first legal drink at the one in Mystic CT while I was doing some delightful maritime studies down there. I miss the Boston area so very much- it is the best place in the world! -

I completed my MPhil at a British university last spring. I was very fortunate to be able to cobble together a big fellowship from my undergraduate institution and a small trust from my graduate institution, which together covered all of my academic costs and a good portion of my rent. In order to pay the rest of my accommodation fees and living expenses, I blew through all my my savings, sponged off of my parents a little bit (not a happy feeling), and midway through the year succumbed to taking out a small loan. I've been able to pay off the loan pretty quickly thanks to my current consulting gig (like Jbarks, also loathing life right now). My big advice is to shake every "money tree" that you can. It might be a little late in the game right now, but I'm sure there are relevant small community organizations, or interest organizations (the American Association of University Women, for example, or some literary orgs) that have open fellowship deadlines. A bunch of small fellowships can go a long way. Like Jbanks, I found my MPhil experience to be hugely rewarding as an individual and as a scholar. But beyond that (not to belittle the value of "that'), I'm not convinced that it has had a huge payoff in terms of employment and PhD admissions prospects. Coming from a very high-profile graduate institution, I entered my job at a **slightly** higher level than people with just a bachelor's degree and, as you can see, I am still sweating PhD admissions- so the degree may not be a great investment in a very limited, practical sense. Best of luck to you!! -

Thanks for the perspective, Grumpy-- you are right: it is still to early to take a completely defeatist attitude. And you stand strong, antecedent! I see you were accepted at Edinburgh- I received an MPhil at a UK institution last year, so feel free to PM me with any questions. -

MichaelK, that is absolutely wonderful news- congratulations! What amazing timing UVA has! In the hope that there is magic in the GradCafe- Despair-Confessional form, I will vent my despair: I applied to 12 programs and have heard back from only one, which put me on the wait-list. Like many Grad Cafe-ers, I studied the historic notification times of my programs and expected to hear from at least eight of them by this time. Everyday goes by in anxious expectation-- I had no idea how exhausting this could be! The time I spend on Grad Cafe has caused me to neglect my duties at work, and I am perpetually behind now and will probably be fired. Every now and then, a wave of anxiety comes over me and I have this strange feeling like a vein in my neck is constricting. This process is hell. Sending sympathy vibrations to all still waiting for positive words! -

I hate Twain's Life on the Mississippi -
I also saw the results posting. It seems early, however- past acceptances seem to have gone out in mid- March. Can anyone claim that post?
