  1. Thanks for posting the link, magicbird! I was on their forum the other days and saw someone' post who contacted SSHRC and received a reply that the results would be sent out late February, which I thought was unusual because it's always been mid-February. But, seeing SSHRC is behind schedule with notifying Banting applicants, it seems likely that we'll be finding out closer to the end of Feb.

  2. Hi all,

I am creating a discussion topic for SSHRC Postdoctoral Fellowship applicants. Today is the deadline to apply, so I thought it would be a good idea to have a place to ask questions, share our experiences, and wait together for the competition results!

  3. I know that at my school, students are eligible to hold the OGS in their 6th year of the Ph.D. and many of them hold it after their SSHRC CGS/Fellowships. But, since the OGS is university (not provincially) administered, this regulation varies by university. I also I disagree that different depts set their own eligibility requirements, but rather it is the university (grad studies) that determines who can hold it and when.

  4. Perhaps someone here knows that can put me at ease - Im going into my third year and got the CGS for 3 years, which means my 3rd, 4th and 5th years could be funded.  Anyone here heard of not being able to accept the award in your fifth year?  Im worried they might take it away as my university doesnt fund in the fifth year....Perhaps someone at Western in the same boat?

First, congrats on the CGS! I was actually in the same situation as you last year -- I won the CGS going into my third year. I can't speak for Western, but I know that Carleton U will not prohibit its students from holding external awards after they have exhausted their internal funding. I would be willing to bet that Western will not keep you from holding an external award in your senior years of the Ph.D. Besides, the money isn't Western's to keep, it's SSHRC's!

  5. Will correct this post slightly, as I had an MA SSHRC this year at Queen's! Without any external funding my department guarantees 18 000$/year to MA students through a variety of internal fellowships/TAships etc. Getting a SSHRC bumps you up to 24 000$, or OGS gets you 21 000$. In any case, it's much better than a lot of universities, though there is definitely a significant 'claw back'.

Good point! Do you know if this is also the case for Ph.D. students there? My friend who applied to the Sociology Ph.D. program at Queen's last year was informed that he'd be able to keep his Doctoral SSHRC and all of the internal funding. It could also be that the claw-back is program- and department-specific, though I'm just speculating.

  6. Quick question to those that are receiving SSHRC at Canadian universities: does your institution claw-back any amount to help defray your tuition costs or anything like that if you're already receiving a fellowship to pay for your studies through your school?

I believe recipients enrolled in foreign universities just get the full amount, minus any taxes, but am I correct in hearing that in Canada, you may have additional amounts deducted by the institution where you're enrolled?

    Thanks

In Canada, each university is different. Some will actually reduce your internal funding package to the amount of the external scholarship you have won (and yes, that really sucks). The University of Toronto, for example, reduces its internal funding packages quite drastically if students there win SSHRCs. Other universities allow their students to keep their internal funding on top of SSHRC (Queens and Carleton do that I believe). It all depends on the school! You should email your faculty of grad studies (or grad chair in your department) to confirm.

  7. Congrats to everyone who was awarded a CGS/Fellowship! And best of luck to those on the waitlist, hopefully it will move quickly. And to those rejected, don't be discouraged. Many of us applied multiple times and eventually you are bound to be successful!

To those waiting for the letter: Canada Post has a strange mail delivery model. Around this time last year my neigbhour across the street received his letter, while I did not. Mine came the next day. This may explain why people in the same city do not necessarily receive their letter on the same day, but rather the next day. Fingers crossed for those waiting for news!

  8. Oh, this thread brings back memories...I remember visiting last year's SSHRC thread probably dozens of times a day and refreshing the damn page, and even more so once the results have been mailed. I know bentharbour and crimsoc are with me on this one :) . Regardless of the individual outcomes, it will be a huge relief once you receive the letter! Hang in there folks, not much longer now! Way to support each other through the process and keep the spirits strong. Thank f*** for threads like this. Best of luck to everyone!

  9. Has anyone else submitted an entry to the Storytellers competition? I wanted to know when we can expect to receive the results. According to the information on SSHRC website, the results will be publicly revealed on April 1st, 2015, but the contest rules indicate that the contestants will be notified on or before March 20th, 2015, which is today. I haven't heard anything yet and my email to SSHRC hasn't been returned. If anyone has more info on this, please feel free to share!

  10. I was lucky and my university offered me a great package, but I'm going to be in Toronto, so SSHRC will be the difference between living in either a crappy apartment on my own or in an apartment with a roommate *cries* and living somewhere that is halfway decent. I'm hoping that they stick to the end of April deadline but maybe they got held up?

Perhaps. If you look at past forums you'll note that from the latter half of April to mid May people get their results. We can speculate but the trend is always during end April and early May.

My university released an update a couple of weeks ago that Ph.D. SSHRC applicants should receive their results at the end of April.

  11. Hi solala and tacitmonument. I strongly believe that notifying SSHRC of your acceptance into a university will not and should not make any difference in the outcome of the adjudication of your SSHRC applications. I see the concerns that you are raising and they're completely valid. However, SSHRC is not concerned whether you are successfully admitted into a program or not. That will be your responsibility, so to speak. They adjudicate applications based purely on the information you supplied in them. They examine how well you are suited to carry out the project that you are proposing, it's as simple as that. Of course, you have indicated in your applications the universities that you may or will be attending and potential supervisor/committee members you'd be working with. But I think that's now finalized and no changes are permitted to your Program of Study. Anyway, that's how I see it, and certainly I could be wrong! And when you contact SSHRC, please do share their response!

  12. hey guys, another direct applicant here. I haven't yet received anything - I wonder if that means I didn't make it to the next round. Does anyone know if direct applicants who are rejected hear back now or do they get rejections in April/May?

Also, weirdly, when I log in to the SSHRC portal, it says "nothing to display" and doesn't show my application. Wonder if that is another sign...

Anyway, congrats to everyone who made it through!

  13. Congrats to all forwarded!

postyork -- I think you're looking at the SSHRC Doctoral fellowships statistics only, in which case you're correct: 80 applicants received an award. I don't think this number includes SSHRC CGS awards, in which case you'd add another 39 (7 Canadian and 32 foreign) awards. Then 80+39 will give you 109, which is the number of both SSHRC Fellowship and CGS awards issued to both Canadian and foreign applicants. That's how I understand it!
