Hey, I currently live in desert and I am moving to Eugene soon for graduate school. Any recommendations for raincoats and rain shoes?

Hey, I forgot to congratulation ya'll!! Congats!! ASA Honors program is tough to get into I think it had a 60% rejection rate when I did. Also, for you AaronM to present at ASA as an undergraduate is really great and impressive! There a couple different ways you can meet people. I emailed a couple people and asked them if I could meet them at a certain ASA section reception. (Each section like Env and Tech or collective behaviors & soc movt have their own receptions.) I also just approached people after their presentations or roundtables and told them I was interested in their them or their program. ASA is very intimidating, but many of the people I met were such sweethearts. I did have some experiences with some jerks, but the majority were really friendly and nice. Make sure you are able to talk about your research and if possible have a bounded copy of it to show people. Just be friendly and smile and just genuinely approach people. I will PM you some more specifics.

Hey, I attended this last year. ASA is a very intimidating conference, but the conference and the program is what you make of it. Don't get scared and not participate in anything!! I used the conference and the program as a platform to meet potential graduate school mentors. It worked really well. I am sad I wont be able to attend the conference this year because I would like to see some of my old friends and the cool sociologists again.

<p> I feel the same way. I don't feel like the board "rushed" me, but they did make me realize that I should make my decision promptly. (Those were hard emails to send :/ ) I don't know, I don't really see the annoyance with waitlist people. This board provides them a space to vent and have hope. I wish them all the best because this whole graduate school process was so "AAHHHHH!!!" -

I did a double major in math and sociology and it was very, very time-consuming. I always knew I wanted to go to graduate school in sociology, so while proving statements in abstract algebra and real analysis I kept wondering what I was doing. Still, it was worth it. I honestly believe some of the best sociological work is done by individuals with expertise outside the field. Math gives me a different way of thinking about things (set theory, conditional statements, etc...). (BTW I am not a big fan of mathematical sociological.) Anyway, one way to be creative is to use methods, ideas, theories, etc... from another field and the double major helps with that. Law and gender studies is a great combo. I am a huge fan of public sociology and I can totally see you going down that route. The grad school process is really, really weird. You just don't know what is going to happen. People with better GPAs and GREs were rejected from places I got into and others were accepted to places I wasn't. Just apply to as many schools as you can. Believe me, it is worth the investment. -

I did it! I submitted my official acceptance to the University of Oregon! (I also sent declines to the rest) Ah!!! So happy and excited!!! :D Congratulations y felicidades to everyone!!!! -
No email, but it is okay, I think I am going to pick another program because I already have a strong POI relationship there. Congrats on your acceptance with funding!!! MSU is an awesome program! You are going to just love it there.

Hey lovenhaight, I went to the department visit--sorry you couldn't be there. It was really amazing! The faculty and graduate students are great, Eugene is beautiful, and UO's campus is really nice too. So, I think I am going to Oregon too, I haven't officially announced it, because I want to sleep on it some more...but I look forward to perhaps being in your cohort!

Hey! Thanks for the info! My POI is Dr. Dietz. I hope to get the funding details soon...good or bad news, I just need to know so I can make my final decision.
-
Thanks for this!
-
Hey, I got a letter in mail today, but it states that funding is still not decided. Does MSU fund all their students?
-
Good to hear! Please, let me know what happens! Definitely agree with you on having down to earth, approachable, smart faculty and not a competitive environment. Colorado State definitely has that. If you get in, you are just going to love it there. It just wasn't the school for me. I just can't decide, but I narrowed down my choices to Oregon and Washington St, Honestly, I want to attend Oregon, but their funding is lower. I love Professor York and their environmental sociology program. I know a couple of the graduate students there and they are amazing! But Washington State just offered me a first year fellowship so I wouldn't have to TA my first year. WSU is also a really great school too. They have awesome research projects happening right now. Their faculty actually works and publishes a lot with Oregon. I don't know, I just have to think about it some more.... o.O
