  1. I emailed them last week to see if they could provide any info on my application status because I'm dealing with a March 1 deadline from another school and am trying to get any info I possibly can. And the email I got back sounds similar to yours--it seems like they're really constricted by funding. Mine said something like, we're very interested, and we hope a TA line will open up, but we're not totally sure. I don't know if this means they're waiting on people to accept or decline early offers (I know there was one posted here back in late January, but I wonder how many they have out...) or if they're hoping they'll get more funding approved. Either way, I think you're right that it's more like we're on the second string than the waitlist. Congrats! I hope funding comes through for both of us!
  2. Another element my professor recommended considering negotiating is teaching load! Maybe a school can't offer you more money, but could plausibly lighten your teaching load for the same money, which I think in some cases could be just as valuable.
  3. About to pull my hair out. My one acceptance wants a decision by March 1 and I haven't heard from any of my other schools. I don't think Penn State has really started notifying yet (except possibly a few fellowship nominees).
  4. First rejection up. I just want to know! I have been so on edge all day.
  5. I'm finding myself with the opposite problem, actually. I sort of desperately want to go to every program I applied to. I have NO idea how I would decide between them if I end up getting into more than one. Edit: Although, I only applied to 4 programs, plus my safety which was the (easy to get into) MA program at the school of one of my (difficult to get into) reach PhD applications.
  6. Dorinda, if you decide Chicago is a better fit, you should try to negotiate! You can even say exactly what you just said (my prof has been training me on this, ha): I really love the program and think it'd be a great fit for me, but I'm a bit concerned about finances (or teaching load, if you'd rather go for that), and I've been offered a strong fellowship from Duke. Is there anything you can do? No idea how to go about deciding on fit though. That's one potential cause of my inevitable upcoming panic attack.
  7. The one program I've heard from/been accepted to wants me to accept or decline their TAship offer by March 1. I know technically I can say yes and back out later (and I'm obviously not going to say no with no other acceptances yet), but that makes me feel so anxious/guilty. I'm trying to contact other programs to see if I can get more info to be able to make this decision with any sort of confidence, but the one I called Friday hasn't gotten back to me yet. Ack, I am desperate for more news before the end of this week.
  8. I'm not exactly sure if this is what you're asking, but there are admissions committees for each specialization within a program; they make the decisions. The whole department doesn't vote, as far as I'm aware. The adcoms forward their decisions to the graduate college, which does the processing, but the grad college doesn't make any decisions on its own. Did you later finish your BA? I thought a BA was a prerequisite for all grad programs.
  9. Yes! It's so much pressure I'm about to crack.
  10. Refuse to foster anti-intellecutalism all you want; your original comment wasn't "conversation inspiring," it was a downright insult. You weren't refuting stratofanatic's argument for Harry Potter and Dave Eggers until after I called you out--you were attacking him/her personally, which I still hold is unnecessary and mean.
  11. How is being kind to people on a forum that is going to have zero effect on your academic career more "pointless" than attacking someone in a forum that is going to have zero effect on your academic career? This has nothing to do with moving forward in academia, it has to do with being a jerk.
  12. Ouch, that's unnecessary. We're writing for a casual online forum here, not our dissertations.
  13. New accpetance on the board in rhetoric, says it was recieved yesterday. Guess that confirms that all specializations did go out. Congrats to those admitted! Now I'll continue to hold my breath for the waitlist.
  14. Haru, I just want to tell you I appreciate that you are as fixated as I am on investigating/hypothesizing about the logistics of the notifications. For me at least, it provides some illusion of control, even though we clearly have none.
  15. I know we say this lightheartedly, but my addiction to this forum is seriously a bit scary. I (gasp) really think I would be better off if I hadn't found it. Edit: But of course, I can't leave now, because then I won't get in anywhere, obviously.
  16. Hahahaa, thanks ComeBackZinc! You're adorable.
  17. Yeah, the announcement, to me, suggests that they're totally done with all first round offers. But that definitely seems inconsistent with the results posted here, as normally people outside of literature have been pretty good about stating their specialty...and I agree, it seems unlikely that no one on the forum outside of lit got in. Well, at least they're saying we'll know definitively by the end of next week. :/ I've been really really hoping for UT too. Fingers still crossed for both of us.
  18. It doesn't seem like it, but the announcement posted on their website leads me to believe that may just mean no rhetoric applicants from the forum got in... Very willing (and hoping) to be wrong, though!
  19. It says rhet/comp, so must be English. Yeah, that's really closer to what I do as well. More like I start to get anxious if I can't refresh for more than an hour... I didn't want to scare spasticlitotes too much.
  20. Aw, haha. Yes! There's a results board! On the top menu where it says "Results Survey." Search "English" to watch all the action unfold. Although, you may want to spare yourself, I now can't help but refresh hourly...
  21. Anyone want to claim the new acceptance? Congrats!
  22. Rats! Good to actually know, though. I was going nuts over here not knowing whether offers had been made for rhetoric too.
  23. I have been stressing all day today not knowing whether all of the accepts for Austin are out or just those for lit. Anyone else being driven insane by the possibility of different notification schedules for rhetoric? Edit: Guess they announced that all first round admissions offers were made. So, nevermind. Sigh.
  24. marlowe, congrats! Are you in lit?
