  1. I see you're accepted to U Windsor, so just to let you know: TD's probably your best option if you go there, since the bank is about five minutes down the street from campus, and the student account I had from them had no fees/minimum balance. Other banks are accessible, but mostly downtown or by the grocery plaza (25 - 40 minute walk). Other notes I'd make is that if you go there, you should be able to find a place around the university to rent fairly cheap/fast, and the cost of living is not very high. Job market is awful if you're expecting to work outside of school, though. Just factors I'd want to know about, I think! TakeruK covered a lot, but feel free to message me if you settle on U Windsor. I went there for undergrad and my MA. Ontario itself is pretty big. Perspective: both one of my school friends from Windsor and I come from northern Ontario. We live more than 15 hours apart by car. But to be honest, it depends on the kind of person you are, re: where you might like visiting. If you dig nature/camping, cities, major tourist attractions, certain sports/activities -- it definitely factors in. If I were to go anywhere within a day of Windsor, I'd head to Toronto, Ottawa, or Montreal, as I love urban exploring and they all have a lot to offer in different ways.
  2. I applied there, too, for Folklore. The previous results seem to indicate that they notify really late, which has me kinda nervous! Good luck to you both.
  3. I recall when I was doing work study for our department (English), we had about 200+ applications for a tenure-track position here. We're not Nowhere, USA, but we are school-you-haven't-heard-of Canada. That and one of my prof's desperate pleas that I take a PhD in anything, ANYTHING but the flooded market of English put me off applying for a PhD for quite some time. My consolation prize for that one: if I don't get into a PhD, at least that otherwise-unnecessary MA gives me access to a higher payband at government jobs and teaching community college. If I have to go back to either after this, I might as well make a little more!
  4. This may totally sound like "Canadian Problems," but I went to University of Windsor, and down here...I find their winter clothes, even with the best selection at the start of the season, are barely winter-ready. Which is fine around here, since I find it's rarely very cold, but not when I go anywhere else -- especially if anywhere else is Calgary, my top choice. But maybe if I get some time to go back home/north post-acceptances (hopefully), I can take a look around. Cokohlik, I love your reward scheme.
  5. I actually keep a file of student quotes from my students' essays and those that my friends send me. I read them to my mother over the phone. A few favourites: "Eating breakfast can change the way an individual functions throughout the day. It enhances how they speak, how they act, and most importantly how think." "Life consists of us as humans to do things and to complete tasks." "In war, not anybody can be perfect. But love does." "When I think of my dream house I think of what everybody thinks of when it comes to dream houses. I think of a house that is unique to me and does not look like any other house around."
  6. Same here. I'm not going to pretend that there is any way (that I've found, anyway) to overcome the ridiculous amounts of anxiety I feel waiting for decisions, but I do feel so much better knowing that I'm in this with so many other people, many of whom are very witty when they're at their wits' end. ...anyone have some effective coping mechanisms they'd like to share?
  7. Once the wait is over, I'm headed to the nearest liquor store with my credit card in hand to spend an irresponsible amount of money. Then I have a few friends in mind who I'm sure will lend their lives to the cause of making it all disappear in a weekend. If I survive that, I'll need some new clothes for wherever I'm going, since anywhere will be colder than here. I don't think I'll find much in the spring, though.
  8. I'm not sure to be honest; I'm getting a lot of admission news right now via friends' Facebooks, but I'll ask her! Evidently they want to hear back from her by March 1st, which seems pretty soon to me.
  9. One of my friends has already been accepted for her PhD in Poli Sci at Concordia, foucaultmania, so I'm hoping you'll hear back really soon. I'm in the same boat as you, Aerobe: one waitlist, haven't heard anything else back. Hard to know what to think, but at least it's not getting waitlisted by your top choice at the last possible minute!
  10. Your research sounds fun and also awesome. I imagine that a committee member picks up my application and says to him/herself, "She wants to write about vampires and feminism? Is she TWELVE?" "Undergrad and an MA at the same school? I haven't even HEARD of that school."
  11. Hey everyone. I'm waiting on: York/Ryerson Communication & Culture McMaster English & Cultural Studies Memorial Folklore (all PhD programs) Waitlisted for Calgary's Creative Writing & English as of yesterday; not sure if that helps anyone. Good luck!
