  1. How soon would you visit the other schools? For this new school, are they offering you funding?
  2. Anybody on here is from Manhattan, KS or planning to move there to go to KState? Suggestions on places to live and not to live would be awesome. I am looking for a 1bd and I have no pets. Accessibility to the grocery store/pharmacy would be great. I do not want to live too far from campus as I won't be going with a car. Merci!
  3. If your undergrad major was Spanish, what they mean you don't have enough preparation in the target language?
  4. Your success in the program and your sanity for the duration of depends on you having a good, if not excellent, relationship with your advisor. And yes, your research interests and theirs should somewhat match so they can support you in your research and you dont get bored/burnt doing something you have no interest in. Depending on the department, you may have to meet with your advisor every week and if you're doing research with him or her then of course, you will make contact more often. They have the key to you walking across that stage to get your diploma, and in some situations, afterwards when you're getting a job. So if you do anything, make sure you and Mr. or Ms. advisor have a good relationship on all levels. You don't have to be bffs but... And a good working relationship with fellow grad assistants and classmates is always awesome! You will need another support system. I've been a grad student and it always helps to have at least one other person in the program you can talk to, work with, collaborate on projects with, seek out for help with hwk, or whatever.
  5. I don't think you should bring up anything. It may start an unwanted brawl and you don't want to get stuck in the middle and ruin your chances of admission OR get screwed over by either POI should you get in to either of the schools. I say leave it alone.
  6. Yes its true. You have to provide proof of your acceptance and they (admissions) should have a form you can fill out and send to the lender vouching for you. I think its an enrollment verification form or sthg so. I had to fill out one myself.
  7. LSU is a great school for English related programs! I pray you get in!
  8. Proceed with applying for the other fellowship while you wait for your interview. You've already been accepted at MSU and like you said, if you don't get lucky at UW-M, you don't want to lose both opportunities. Just my two cents...
  9. I agree with busybee. If USC was your first choice AND you got accepted, then why not accept their offer? I'm pretty sure all the other schools you applied to were just in case you didn't get into USC/2nd, 3rd, 4th...choices. As long as they're giving you a decent pkg (stipend, tuition and health insurance waiver) then why not? As you said you're pretty sure that you wont get in to CalTech or U-M and Standford was a rejection...Not many people get accepted to their first choice...just my two cents
  10. Agree with TakeruK. There is also the option of getting the exemption from your home country so you won't have to return there and will be able to apply for the H. We were F1 so the process is a bit different/easier than J1. Talk to your DSO or an immigration attorney.
  11. Congrats! My best friend is a 2nd year in that program and she loves it! If you go there, hopefully you will, too. The profs are very nice and personable and they always try their best to help out (my friend's words). They practically picked her up at the airport, helped her find an apartment, even took her to the store to pick up furniture and supplies since she didnt have a car yet (now she does).
  12. It is easier to get h1-b sponsorship and green card sponsorship once you have your PhD. Speaking from personal experience.
  13. Yes you can. TC is part of Columbia.
  14. ...New York and Maryland are expensive. I lived in both places for years and I can tell you for fact if you decide to go to Maryland, cost of living in Montgomery County is ridiculously high, particularly Rockville, Potomac, and Bethesda; Gaithersburg, Silver Spring, Wheaton/Glemont is cheaper (still kinda expensive). Baltimore is much cheaper but beware that there are a lot of high crime/low income/trashy places in Baltimore so choose carefully (the Towson area is nice). I can give you more tips if you like since I lived both in Baltimore and in Montgomery County/DC area (I go back there often to visit family). New York is reaaaalllly expensive in terms of rent. Food and clothes are dirt cheap I can tell you but a really decent unfurnished apartment in a really decent neighborhood could cost you $900 a month. Worse, if you plan to go to school on Long Island or in Manhattan itself. You may want to live in the Bronx or Brooklyn or Queens and commute by train.
  15. Always my cellphone and laptop(essential) because the office computers are always slow. Pens, pencils, my wallet, mirror, lip gloss, ladies' essentials, toothbrush, floss, keys. A bottle of water, an ensure or some time of energy shake, a bowl with my home-cooked lunch, healthy snacks.\ Maybe a textbook or two with highlighters and paper for printing. One book for all my notes, which almost always never gets used because the profs always give handouts, powerpoints, etc...
