  1. Anyone see the news about Yale Egyptology? http://yaledailynews.com/blog/2013/08/28/egyptology-program-in-hot-water/
  2. This thread has been a big comfort, especially given the current visa worker strike. This is the same advice I was given by my school, but I heard it here first!
  3. Millionthing the "no such thing as a safety school" sentiment. My life just got flip-turned upside down in the most amazing way!
  4. Claiming the University of Toronto MA acceptance
  5. Apparently the Memphis committee is meeting this week. Anyone else excited to hear from them?
  6. Congrats to whoever it was that got into Brown!
  7. Perhaps now is a good time to begin practicing that diplomacy...
  8. As an asthmatic with severe allergies, I use a small air purifier with a HEPA filter in my bedroom. Something like this may be helpful to you: http://www.amazon.com/Honeywell-16200-Desktop-HEPA-Purifier/dp/B0000TMDY2/ref=pd_sbs_hg_5
  9. Rock on! My undergrad mentor is an AI/HB scholar. What's your area of interest?
  10. To a full-time, self-supporting student with no family support, $150 is a lot of money.
  11. No, you can't buy a position in grad school, but when you have a trust fund, don't have to work, can afford an expensive top-tier undergrad and can travel for unpaid internships, it sure is one heck of an advantage.
  12. I mean, though, it's an Ivy. Can you really say you're surprised that they're selective?
  13. ...turns out it'll probably be harder to become a muppeteer than it will be to get into grad school. I don't know if that's comforting or discouraging.
  14. It was really bad around midterms last semester. She walked in on me making shadow muppets on the wall. Turns out when she melts down, she says "screw it, I am going to watch anime until I die", so we mupeteered while watching Fullmetal Alchemist until the insanity passed.
  15. Cry. Find a job, work for a year, apply again. Consider becoming a muppeteer.
  16. "So, uh, how do you plan on eating with such a useless degree?"
  17. My meltdown plans usually involve becoming a muppeteer.
  18. Heh, I'm going nuts and the deadlines for my programs aren't even until Tuesday I know I have strong letters of recommendation, but I just feel like I'm nothing compared to the folks who can apply to seven or eight programs and have had more opportunities :/
  19. So I just put my applications in for Egyptology grad programs. I have an okay GPA (3.6) from a state school, okay GRE scores (89th percentile on verbal), good languages and research and strong letters of recommendation. I wish I knew what the competition was like, but I can't find any information anywhere. Anyone else applying for Egyptology this year? I could only afford to apply to two schools and I'm feeling like a real chump next to some of the other applicants who are applying to nine programs and have prestigious internships :/
  20. Applications are in. I am feeling really, really inadequate. I could only afford to apply to two schools. My GPA is okay (3.6), I did all right on the GRE... but I have absolutely no idea what my peers applying to Egyptology programs are like, or even how many there are. I am jealous of people in fields who have some feel of the competition.
  21. Actually, most people applying for Egyptology MA programs are not expected to have a formal Egyptology background, seeing how only a handful of schools offer undergrad degrees in the field. They are expected, however, to have a strong background in a discipline such as history or anthropology and to have reading mastery of French and/or German.
  22. When contacting a POI who has a television show, would it be bad form to mention having seen said show and enjoyed it? Should I stick explicitly to her research and publications, or would it be worse form to pointedly ignore the television show?
  23. Hey, all. I'm posting to get some answers and closure on a topic that has been a major source of anxiety for some time now -- how much does the prestige (or lack thereof) of your undergraduate institution matter for graduate admissions? Some background on me and my field of study: I am an older student (turning 27 in two weeks) attending a small, no-name state college because it was my only financially feasible option. I make decent grades (3.66 -- not stellar, but not awful) and I have gotten to know my professors very well, including an independent study with the dean of my department. I plan on applying for Egyptology masters programs in the fall -- the three I definitely am applying to are Toronto, Memphis and Liverpool. Will a strong writing sample/personal statement and strong letters of recommendation make up for coming from a no-name school, or will the people from the big leagues win every time?
