  1. I contacted NSERC again and they said this year the waitlists will have less chance compared to last year !!!!!!!!!! I dont get it every place they put you in a waitlist they tell you where you stand, whats so confidential about this!!!!

I actually think they only gave 70 ~ 80 PDFs this year, its getting harder than banting or getting a direct faculty position :D

  2. I am also on the waiting list for a PDF (with pre-approved IRDF). I initially thought that practically all hope was lost; but now I am wondering whether I have a good chance of getting an award since NSERC has recently stopped the practice of awarding more fellowships than the budget initially allows by predicting the number of declined awards... Just like many on this thread, I emailed NSERC asking about my ranking in the waitlist and was replied:

    "Congratulations!

Unfortunately, we cannot disclose that information."

I mean, why congratulate me? ... for my pre-approved IRDF ? This is not exactly what I was wishing for.

  3. I got my PDF rejection letter today in Montreal (Pre-approved IRDF)

Published papers: 9 (5 First Author (PNAS, Anal. Chem, J. Phys. Chem etc; 3 second Author: Nature Chem, Nature Nano, JACS)

Oral Presentations: 12 in National and international (4 Best oral presentations)

Leadership: Organized conferences, Initiated science outreach programs, President of a posdoc association etc

Status at the time of application: Postdoc in a top school.

After following this forum for while, I was almost sure that I won't get my PDF.

I tried to include as much information as possible about my application.

    Good luck everyone,

I only had 4 first author journals and one second author but all where is IEEE trans. high impact factors. I also was a visiting researcher on top US schools and invited lecturer to some other schools and one best paper award and 5 grants (CGS etc.). I am on a waitlist and it would only be reasonable if you at least got waitlisted!!!!! I dont get whats going on with NSERC, two years ago 4 first author journals meant 100% PDF.

  4. Well, it finally came. Meritorious but unable to fund for a PDF in ecology/evolution, pre-approved for an IRDF. 9 papers (6 first author), 2 submitted, two refereed reports, loads of conference presentations, heavy involvement in scientific societies (I'm actually on the board of directors of one), good number of previous awards, including a PGSD3, reference letters that make me blush. *sigh*

    How about waitlist?

  5. No, I just insisted for a couple of minutes to let me know how many people in average get shortlisted. I sent a request to NSERC to provide me with the reviews for my application but they are not going to send it to me until June.

Were the 5-10 people in the short list from all disciplines? I also emailed NSERC to see i they can tell me my rank. I will try to also cal the ECE rep in NSERC to see if she can give some info.

Who else was here from ECE in waitlist?

  6. Just called the NSERC rep for Physics and Chemistry to see how many people are shortlisted for PDf (of course I am in the engineering program, but the engineering rep did not give me a clear answer). He told me that in average they shortlist between 5-10 people and last year only 2 of them got out of the list.

    Did they say your rank?

  7. I know a friend of mine last year got out of the list. I do not know what was his rank. I guess in each category (e.g. electrical engineering) they shortlist 2-3 people and not more. That's just a guess.

I am in ECE but I think there are already 3 more people in this forum from ECE in the short list, I guess upto 30 people are in the waitlist. Anyways my experience with NSERC wait list was good, i got waitlisted for NSERC-MSFSS and got it.

  8. Would like to know from somebody on the PDF waiting list - was your position in the letter? I've emailed NSERC to ask where mine is, but I'm guessing if it wasn't in there I'm not high on the list?

yes, its says explicitly in the letter that you are in a wait list and if you get an email by June this means you got the award otherwise nothing. What was your stats?

  9. Thank you. I had 4 published and 2 submitted papers in my PhD. 4 published papers prior to PhD study. I had my PGS-D3 in my PhD. I thought that my proposal was very powerful. The letter indicates that "because you have also indicated for IRDF.......". Not sure if that played any role in my selection or not ...". IRDF pre-approved and it will remain active until March 2014.

Does this mean you had 8 first author published journals and you still did not get in the waitling list!!!!

  10. Oops! Guess I was wrong about the visa residency requirement, sorry about that.

I got PDF news today in California (wait listed), so I'm sure tomorrow is the day for the rest of you in Canada! Good luck

Welcome to the club :P, can you let us know of ur record? BTW do you have any idea on what is our chance in getting the award in June?

  11. I'm from Mcgill.

I don't know how to find out our ranking on the wait list. Maybe if you email nserc you'll get lucky... keep me posted :P

hehe we are from the same place, I guess they decided to put poor McGill grads in waitlists :D. I just sent them an email, lets see how it goes, let me know if you get any info on what our acceptance rate is, it seems the waiting game is never over for us!!!

  12. Hi marmoor,

I'm in the same situation as you: wait-listed and wondering what my chances are of getting good news in June.

I don't recall anyone on this forum saying they got PDF. Anyone? anyone...?

    Hi Sandbag,

Which university are you from? Is there anyway we could know what is our rank in the waitlist and what is our chances in getting the award?
