The University of Iowa-Fall 2016 SLP

I'll probably end up doing the same. I'll probably err on the side of being too formal. And yes to funding and apartments, although everything is so much more affordable than where I currently live. -

So we've decided to go in person! We'll be flying to Chicago and then taking a rental car down to Iowa City. I'm trying to decide what to wear and all the questions I want to ask during the panels. I'm excited! And nervous! -
It looks like Northeastern is rolling acceptances to people now? The results page is all confused, they sent that open house email to a bunch of people (I got one, too) but I've only seen a couple of acceptances and my portal hasn't changed. Northeastern isn't a top choice for me, but I know lots of people here are applying, so I thought I would post!

I've been emailing with Mary Jo about logistics, since I'm coming from the east coast, and she gave me a really nice run down. I don't know if this information has been sent out to the accepted pool as a whole, so here it is: If you can do it, I recommend staying at the Heartland Inn in Coralville, IA. They’re a 10 minute drive (less than that usually). There are eating establishments in that plaza that are walking distance. Also, if you ask for the motel “Hospital Shuttle” to The University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics, the motel will drive you here at no charge. Our building is the Wendell Johnson Speech & Hearing Center and we are right before the Hospital. The Heartland contact number is 800-334-3277 and the address is 87 Second St., Coralville, IA. Their rates start at around $70 and they provide a continental breakfast. Their local phone number is 319-351-8132and they ought to pay me a commission! The airport you would be flying into is Eastern Iowa Airport, Cedar Rapids, IA. They are about 20 minutes from Iowa City. There are rental cars and taxis available there. If you do decide to come, please let me know if you have any questions. I'm trying to figure out if I can swing the cost of visiting, but since my boyfriend is also going to be moving with me, and he wants to see Iowa City, I figure I have to go in person. We're probably going to make a weekend out of it. -
Thanks! I didn't know about the ASL program, but I don't sign, so that's not as applicable to me. I'm going to the open house, too, so maybe we'll see each other there.

Well, when I did my big pros/cons chart several weeks ago, my top choices were UMD, Iowa, and Pitt. But I still need to hear about financial assistance before I can commit anywhere. I've actually heard very little about the program. I applied mostly because I liked a professor there and I wanted to work in an aphasia lab, and Iowa was one of the few schools that had MA students in an aphasia lab (and took out of field students with only prerequisites, was in a city that I wanted to live in, etc, etc). Do you mind sharing what you've heard?
-
Congrats, flowerbloom! Do you think you'll end up going? I'm pretty stunned about getting in, especially since I'm from out of field.
-
No, unfortunately, it's one of the very last letters. I'm not sure if they notify in batches or what...

I just got into U Iowa??

Congratulations!! You deserve it!

When can I expect to hear about funding?
esopha replied to SLPgradstudent's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
I gave an estimated AGI on my FAFSA. I generally know what it's going to be, anyway. I'm planning on filing an correction once I do my taxes.- 22 replies

Firsthand reviews of Graduate Programs
esopha replied to CBG321's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
Many large public universities have similar programs! That's one of the reasons that I applied to UMD, though, as well as to Iowa. -
I only got the prerequisite email from Iowa. I really want to hear back from them, too!

Official Fall 2016 Interview Thread
esopha replied to OverCaffeinated's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
I just got the notification for the Boston U interview! And promptly sent them an email with a garbled sentence, but oh well. They know I can write, hopefully. -
Definitely apply for FAFSA. Try to avoid too many Grad PLUS loans, and avoid private loans, too, since they generally don't have forgiveness plans. I've been aggressively saving (probably less diligently than I should be), picking up odd jobs, and searching for scholarships. There are a couple that I've found - ASHA foundation has some, and then I also found this one: http://ebsunited.com/scholarships/multicultural-scholarships-and-grants It's only for second year/CFY applicants, but every bit helps. Edit: Found the ASHA one! https://www.ashfoundation.org/grants/Graduate-Student-Scholarship/

Omg. That is awful. I think I would be dead from the stress. I would definitely give them a call or an email - it sounds like you might be in!

That's because diversity is valuable.

Congratulations! In-state tuition is the dream!!

Schools don't accept the most qualified applicants all the time. That's not strategic. The number of students that turn them down after receiving an acceptance is counted against them in rankings. If you seem like you're not going to take their offer (either by way of not super enthusiastic SOP, or because your stats are too high and you're obviously using them as a back up system) they're not going to offer you admission. Plus, schools have considerations like whether they need to accept students from a variety of backgrounds, or if they have in-state percentage requirements. Honestly after years of applying to things I've realized that it's rarely all about you, lol. Most of the time you're competing against an idealized candidate in the minds of whomever you're trying to impress. You just need to fall into the bell curve of acceptable people, roll the dice, and hope.

I was just waitlisted at GW, so I guess they're sending out a new round of decisions!
-
I'm not sure if Emerson only accepts people that they interview. I think the process is new as of last year... I am still waffling on whether to do my interview in person. I think I'd like to, but it would be nice to hear from BU before I book a flight up there.
-
Puffer Fish, like SLPg said, I think UMD does admissions in batches! I wouldn't give up hope yet. And you've applied to so many great schools, so you know you'll end up somewhere good no matter what happens. It only takes one yes.

HIGH FIVES!!!!

THANKS GIRL. Have you heard anything?? I'm going to see the rest of my applications out (except maybe for Redlands... if I can stay nearby, I don't want to move to California!) because I haven't heard anything about the money question. UMD is definitely in my top 3, though, so I'm excited!

I just received my official Maryland acceptance letter! I am extremely chuffed. eta: ok, maybe not official-official, but the department has accepted me! They said an official-er email/letter is incoming.
