Because I left this thread on a less-than-positive note awhile ago, I just wanted to come back and extend a heartfelt congratulations to everyone accepted to HGSE. Enjoy your preview weekend, and best of luck with your future endeavors!
Didn't you get into Stanford?

Any idea if there is a suggested dress code for the Open House? Aside from my soon-to-be purchased HGSE sweatshirt, of course.
Dress however you want. If the weather is nice enough, go with jeans and a t-shirt.

So I am grappling with this decision about which grad school I am going to go to. I am pursuing a masters degree in higher ed/student affairs and so far I have 3 acceptances. I got accepted to UCLA, PENN & Syracuse. PENN is offering me some funding but its still super expensive. UCLA is offering me no money but it is still cheaper to go there than to go to PENN. Syracuse is offering me full funding with a grad assistantship.
So should I go to the school that is funding me or the school I am in love with?
It would be amazing to go to PENN but I am so nervous about the debt...
HELP!
I'd go with Syracuse. If this were law school or business school then going with prestige could make a big difference - but this is education school.

John Harvard's was Andy's top pick for being a "good introduction to Cambridge while also being big enough for a group"
Ha, John Harvard's is where both the Harvard and Stanford meetups were set when I was applying to those schools almost a decade ago. It seems to be the standard for meeting up.

Sounds ageist to me. Old faculty can be awesome - connections, experience, influence ...

Has anyone received their Financial Aid Award Notification, yet?

I think this will work: HGSE 2013-2014, HGSE EPM 2013-2014
If the links don't work for whatever reason, those are the exact names of the groups and they are open groups so you should be able to successfully search for them on facebook (let me know if not!).
Thank you!

Just got in from my admitted student reception! Walking on cloud nine...even more excited now! (If that's even possible!)
Damn it, mine was on Thursday and I didn't have access to the prematriculation website until yesterday :-(
-
The link to accept admission and pay your deposit was in the original email, you may need them to send you that link since you were accepted last year. I can't find it on the pre-matric site...
Thank you.

HGSE finally gave me access to the matriculation website today.
On the student directory, it says: "As an admitted student, you have the option of sharing your contact information with other admitted students by checking off the appropriate box on the online response form"
Can someone tell me where this online response form is found?

Wow, Harvard won. Big upset!

In response to your first point: I disagree with the underlying premise that the reason to get a degree is to earn more money. I know that I am devoting my time and money to study something that I love, so that I can work in a field that I enjoy. I imagine that those pursuing a degree in medicine, law, business, and the arts and sciences are doing so for similiar reasons. However, if we choose to judge the value of a degree by median income, the case still is not clear cut. In the private sector, there are many alternatives to earning an MBA that will earn more money. There is a glut of people holding MBAs currently, and with the economic downturn, it means less of an advantage in both earnings and job security than was the case a few decades ago. There are also many studies about how there are now too many lawyers and too many doctors... and that many people graduating from these professional schools are unable to pay off their loans for a very long time. Again, I disagree with choosing finances as the sole deciding factor as to the value of a degree, and I think (perhaps unsurprisingly) that education is one of the most valuable things that a person can do with their time and energy.
When I read what Sonic Youth wrote, I did not in any way get that she was saying that the reason to get a degree is to earn more money, or that finances were the sole deciding factor as to the value of the degree.

Which is bull. Harvard should be able to fully fund all of its education students. Why on earth would someone willingly go $65,000 or more in debt for an M.Ed degree? Seems like the most you'd make coming out of that program is 50-60,000, and that's most likely in a major city where the cost of living is extremely high.
Why is it bull? Harvard is in the business of making money, not charity.

has anybody found statistics on average scholarship/assistance? Started reviewing that admitted student packet today and $65k in writing made it seem a lot heavier than before...
Based on the financial aid packages they've offered the past two years, all I have to say is don't expect much. You're going to be expected to pay for most of it.

Eh no, I thought about either starting an HGSE 13-14 or HGSE EPM 13-14 group on facebook but I wasn't sure I wanted to keep it as an open group that anyone can join and I was very sure I didn't want to have to deal with approving/looking into join requests. I know at Penn GSE the Ed Policy group is moderated by their program coordinator (who has a full roster of who to accept requests from) so I'm sort of waiting to see if that happens with HGSE too.
Also I'm pretty sure I just mailed my transcripts to 110 Longfellow Hall instead of 111 Longfellow. Every time I do something idiotic now, I have that moment where I think facetiously to myself, "why, yes, I did in fact get into Harvard" - finding another way to pressure myself into perfection wtf
The class of 2013 has a closed group that was set up by one of the admits. 425 members, and I assume I'm the only one who isn't actually a member of the class. I don't believe the school ever set up a group.

Has anyone set up a Harvard Graduate School of Education - 2014 page, yet?

What changed between years, if you don't mind me asking? I'll be doing a fellowship next year so am hoping that they think that's "legitimate" enough. Regardless, the other two programs I'm strongly considering don't have a problem with me doing it so that would be a dealbreaker for me if Harvard didn't let me defer.
I rather not say on these forums. If Harvard doesn't let you defer you can always reapply this year. They would probably love that.
-
I was wondering that, too...
It was something I was considering, but they really, REALLY emphasize that it's rare that they ever do. Not only do they say it on their website, but I called to ask about it yesterday and it was something whoever I was talking to wanted to get across.
Even though I think my reasoning makes sense for me and my fiancee, I highly doubt Harvard would agree based off of the aforementioned stuff.
I just don't want to ask and look like a jackazz after they decline my request.
I requested a deferral in 2011. They denied my request. So I reapplied in 2012, and then again asked for a deferral. That time they accepted my request. But I had some pretty legit reasons to defer.

Are you Special Studies?
Yes, I am. I'm a holdover from 2011 & 2012. I'm excited to finally attend this year.
-
Since I applied last year, I haven't been given a link to this year's YouTube video. Would someone please be kind enough to share it?
-
Well, looks like I need to consider it...just found out I was accepted into EdM!!!! (It was in my spam folder) Special studies so I get to create my own program!! I was so disappointed when I didn't get an invite for EDLD, but my joy right now in uncontainable! Thank you all for being there through this arduous process!
Congratulations! Special Studies is always an eclectic cohort. I look forward to meeting you.
