I am a current slp and have a daughter that recently graduated with her masters in speech, and became aware of this site when she was applying. Now I just nose around once in a while and help when I can. I have seen heartache from many applicants on this site and know some personally that did not get into graduate schools. My friend is the director of a program in PA. He states that it is so difficult right now to get into a program that an applicant with less than a 3.5 will have a difficult time getting in anywhere. It sounds like you are struggling with the basic subjects so I will be honest and suggest you not waste any more time and money on this major. Find another major that is a better fit for you. There are majors out there that you may never have been aware of. I strongly suggest you go to your schools career center for guidance. They can give you a test that can help match careers with your interests and abilities. Most if not all colleges offer this service free of charge for its students. Don't give up on college, just find the right area of study. Good Luck!

I think that is very normal. It is hard to turn down something someone has 'given' you. It goes against our nature. Daughter struggled back and forth from day to day, sometimes within a day! I hope she made the right decision. I helped gather information, but the decision had to be made by her. Debt scared her and in the end she went for the best financial deal...but it still hurts--her and me!

MA turned down: University of Maryland half funded Boston College half funded GWU Loyola Chicago Boston University Northeastern

D will be graduating from GW in May so her place will be available mid June or July 1. She has a GREAT location right in Foggy Bottom behind the hospital and it is a great deal for the area, but it is still pricy by my standards as she is alone in a studio-$1550. Many of the other units in her building go for 1600-2400. Her place is small but good enough for one person or a married couple. It is safe and convenient to GW- 2min, FB Metro stop 2 min, Georgetown shopping -5min, Dupont Circle 8 min, White House-10 min. etc. In DC the best way to find a place is Craigslist. If you see something of interest, you need to move quickly as things are gone in one or two days. You can set it so you can try to find a roommate. Some of the buildings allow renters to divide units with temporary walls that look permanent. It is worth it if you are going to be there a while or if you can find someone that has already done it and is looking for someone to take over one of the units. Then you might get a place in that area for ~900-1k a month. The first year D lived in Chrystal City for 1K along with 2 others. It was far from everyone so I would not rx that. There are places in Arlington just over the river that are also busy young areas, but I am not sure it is much cheaper if at all. Keep in mind that DC subways charge by how far you go and what time of day it is.

About Georgetown D just now told me which associateships she had applied for, basically all but the last, which was more about poetry and she did not feel it was a strength for her. She has been working as a writing consultant for 3.5 years and ultimately wants to work in editing. Oh well. Congratulations to anyone that got/gets the funding.

D was also sent the email from Georgetown stating that she was near the top of the alternate list for funding. Does anyone ever turn them down leaving a spot for an alternate? There are at least two that got this email here. What are the chances?....oh well. She has 4 other funded offers, but this would have been nice. It's time to decide, but she is unsure. Every program has its pluses and minuses. To the person who heard from GW: Was your application for the PhD or MA program? D applied for MA, but has not heard from them yet.

Still have heard nothing about funding from Georgetown here...D needs to make a decision. I wish she would hear one way or the other.

You guys are great! You're teachers who cannot stop finding opportunities to teach. I hope you find yourselves standing in the positions where you deserve to be. Do few people major in English if they want to publish/edit? Do most folks interested in publishing pursue an advanced degree in publishing or do they go into the work force directly with the BA?

The debt questions are mine as well. What do you ultimately wish to do as a career? Congratulations on UVA. That is great! I really thought today would be a big result day for the MA applicants.

D has been accepted to three MA programs all with some funding. She is waiting for more results, but there is some pressure to respond by at least one of the admits. One program is ranked out of the top 100, but with full tuition and 10K+ year stipend. The other programs are significantly higher ranked and offer basically two years of free tuition. One is in a "publishing" town. How important is location and ranking for a job in the world of publishing? I have no idea how to advise her.

I will just be upfront with all of you. I am not the applicant. I am the parent. Many times I have deleted comments I wanted to make, ideas I wanted to share, and questions I wanted to ask because I felt like an invader. This is your space, true, but as a parent of a MA applicant I want so much to thank you all for the information I have learned here. This is not my or my husband's field of study. My D doesn't tell us a lot about how things work with English departments, and in her case, the world of Publishing, but she will want our opinion on which program she should select. I feel if I don't start this now I won't be able to thank you all for the help so far and also pick your brains for what I still don't know. Does anyone here know anything about the book publishing field? Does rank and location of university matter and if so how much?

I feel like this forum is starting to wind down. It feels sad even for those with happy outcomes as you all go your separate ways. Congratulations to all that were admitted to a place you're happy with and good luck in determining your next option and making it happen if you were disappointed with the results this year. But what about the MA applicants? Results are just starting to come in now. Are there so few applying at that level anymore or are they just not on Grad Cafe? Anyone here lurking and looking for MA information?

Oh ignore the Speech Path program above. I am not usually on this site. That was for two years ago and D1.

It is hard to know for sure where and when funding will come. I have seen posters here say they applied to a school because the school stated on their website that funding was available for Masters level study only to find out later that it was not offered after all. D was just accepted to a program with 2/3 tuition waiver and a stipend after she was told in December that no money was available for Masters level students at that university.
