Hey guys! I wish you guys all the best in your applications. I was/ still am in the same situation. If you recall I was an active member of this thread in the year of 2012. I didn't get in in 2012 nor did I last year. I've reapplied this year but only as a backup. I've been accepted to the M.A. Clinical Program at Australia and will be commencing this February!
-
Where did you hear about this? I applied to both Clinical and Counselling, and I haven't heard anything from OISE.
-
Sad to break the news (Waterloo--Clinical Psychology only), but here it is: the committees have already concluded admissions process for this year. They are unlikely to be interviewing any more applicants or extending any further offers of admission. This was straight from the POI with whom I have worked with for over two years. So basically if you weren't invited for an in-person interview, you're out, which includes me.
-
Sounds awesome and exciting! Completing your M.A. degree must be a big relief for you, knowing that you won't be working at a grocery store as a cashier clerk. An Undergrad degree in Psychology is utterly useless..... you can't go anywhere with a B.A., you need at least a M.A. degree to have a decent paying job. I haven't given up yet.... Can you switch to Ph.D in Clinical Psychology? Because that's what I plan to do after I get a M.A. in Counselling Psychology.
-
Woah!! I bet you, as a student, must have some very impressive and admirable qualities. I really hope I can make it in! Btw, will you be applying to Ph.D in Counselling Psychology--just curious
-
Thanks for the information. What are the odds that a student on the wait list is admitted?
-
Does this also apply to those who are on the Wait list? Sorry to hear that... who knows maybe the candidate will turn down his/her offer.
-
My online status still indicates "Under Review". I don't know about others, but my first choice was M.A. in Counseling Psychology, seconded by Ph.D in Counseling Psych, and Ph.D in Counseling Psychology (flex term) as my 3rd choice.

I am from Toronto. You should receive your's next week or so.
-
It may take a while for Quest to be updated. He's not the only POI that you enrolled right? If so, then perhaps your other POIs are still reviewing your application or maybe a letter of notification is on it's way. I am interested in knowing how many applicants got onto the wait list for M.A. Counselling Psychology at OISE this year and last year.
-
Just received a letter today from OISE, which states that I am on a wait list. Happy and sad... Happy is that I am qualified and the fact that I might actually get in... but it sucks that I have to be all miserable for another 2 months. Anyhow, good luck to all; to those who plans to withdraw your admission of offer, please do so so I can get in .
-
It's definitely better than not receiving one. Did you just got it today?
-
possibly... candidates are usually given a set period to either accept or decline their offer, after then does the spot goes to those who are on the waiting list.
-
Pretty much, unless those 8 successful candidates decide to not take the offer. There is still a chance that we make it to the waiting list.
-
Sad to break this, but I believe OISE has already sent out acceptances info to successful candidates. For those of us who got rejected, we should receive an e-mail from the registrar's office next week. When I went to check last year's admission statistics for OISE, the date no longer shows as March 2011. Instead, it indicates "as of March 2012". 8 candidates were admitted to M.A. Counsel Psych program, 6 of which have already accepted the offer. http://www.ro.oise.utoronto.ca/RO_Official.htm

From what I heard, you're absolutely right about the type of work that's involved in M.A. in social work; Social work places a strong emphasis on the practice of psychotherapy and other interventions. Students in Social Work heavily invest in counselling work, in opposed to academic related skills like research techniques, statistics, etc... Yes, you can become a counsellor after the completion of M.A. in Counselling Psychology. If your goal is to become a counsellor, then perhaps M.A. in social work or M.ed in Counselling Psychology would be more suitable. Although not necessary, but generally speaking, POI expects their "Masters of Art in Psychology" students to continue onto "Ph.D in Psychology", and so applicants whose academic ambition ends with a M.A. degree may be at a disadvantage.
-
I do not have any work experience. I do, however, have research experience. She caught me off-guard since I wasn't expecting a call or to discuss my application. I tried to stay away from saying things like becoming a counsellor--My prof at Waterloo told me in specific that potential supervisors are wary of applicants whose interests are limited to counselling work, in opposed to research.
-
No worries! I was rejected from McGill twice: once for Intern-based and the other for project based. Good luck to all of us for OISE!
-
Don't envy me :D// I screwed up the Interview, badly. She called me right before I went to bed after pulling an all-nighter, I couldn't answer the simplest questions she threw at me like "why did you apply to Counselling Psychology". Oh well

I know who Dr. David Moscovitch is, but I haven't spoke to him before so I wouldn't know. What I do know is that he is very nice but slow on e-mails. FYI, I do think that he is taking-in new students next September. Clinical Psych is extremely competitive, even for local students. My marks are stellar, with most Psych courses that I took above 95%, I was still rejected from Mcgill and ottawa. BTW, I read the post that you listed, is it reliable?
-
I've applied to Ottawa and McGill, both of which got rejected. You will get an e-mail from the Registrar's office regardless of the result. There are only so many openings each year for International students, so the competition is worst for international students than it is for us, locals. I study at the U of Waterloo, and I am confident to say that compared to other universities... the Department of Psychology is fairly small, which translates to few Clinical professors and extreme competition. To make things worst, the professor who I am working with at the moment will be leaving for sabbatical and so, the list for available POI just reduced in size.
-
Yup... waiting waiting and more waiting. If I can't get in this year... I will apply again at December, then go on a Cruise for 4 months to take my mind off.
-
I'd say go ahead and ask him about the status of your application; the pain in waiting is so much worse than a big fat rejection upfront, at least it is for me. Plus, there's always a chance that you're "ACCEPTED". Let me know how it goes if you ever decide to ask! Best of Luck!
-
Hey. I don't think interview is part of an integrated selection process according to their website. I have no idea why she called me... and no, she is not my POI--I don't think we were given the option to pick our POI. I am guessing the prof who called me was interested in me, and that I was on her short-list for potential candidates. From what I know, all applicants are evaluated and ranked on an individual basis by profs who will be taking-in new student(s) at September. The way in which our application is reviewed varies... based on the prof's method of preference. Nop, my SGS status hasn't changed yet. Like you and all others, I am still waiting for a decision to be made; I have to admit, the wait is indeed very painful and frustrating! Don't bother checking the SGS.... the status will remain unchanged indefinitely. I will, however, check an eye on my e-mail. Anyway, you need not to worry.. I highly doubt that the result will be conveyed to us before March 28th.

Hey guys, I've also applied to OISE counselling psychology (M.A. and Ph.D). I received a call, a while back, from a prof at the department of counselling psychology (I am confident that she's on the committee). She started the conversation by asking me about my current research, my research interest and my career goal. She then talked about her current work and her interest in research. The whole conservation lasted 14 minutes. Anyhow, she told me a decision will be made, by the committee, 3 weeks from today (she called me on Feb 24, 12), so we should hear from them very soon. BTW, I was rejected from Uof Ottawa and McGill. Good Luck!
