Thank you, WIndfish. I was supposed to leave town today. But now I have to wait until Saturday. What a pain! But I guess I have to "court" them as you say if I want in the program.

I was rejected on April 2nd (my birthday). Then I got an email the day before Father's Day saying that one of the chosen few had dropped out "mainly because of financial reasons." They said they would like to admit me but that I had to interview with some of the professors who don't know me. (This is my alma mater.) The first interview was scheduled for tomorrow to find out how "ready" I am for a TA-ship. I emailed the professor asking to meet with him on Tuesday. He emailed me back with a time. But I wasn't able to confim for seven hours because I was on a job (no computer) So the professor canceled. We're supposed to try again for Friday. I don't know if this is how things are supposed to work. I'm starting to have second thoughts. It all seems so unorganized. Is it just me? Any comments would be helpful. I'm almost sick with indecision.

I have an interview for a TA position because they want to see "how ready I am for a TA-ship." What the heck does that mean? There's no way they would just throw me to the wolves, so to speak, and ask me to teach would they? I'm just entering the MFA Dramatic Writing program; this fall will be my first semester. In fact, I'm not even sure if I'm in the program yet. It's so crazy. I was rejected in April, then received an email last Saturday saying that someone dropped out and that they would like to admit me to the program, but some of the professors who don't know me would like to interview me first. (This is my alma mater, so I know most of the theatre professors.) The first interview is scheduled for this Friday and is in regards to the TA-ship. I don't have any other interviews scheduled yet. But, that's for another forum. Anyway, what DOES a TA do during their first semester? Thank you anyone, everyone.

Northern Arizona University-Graduate Students (Fall 2012)
waitinginvain? replied to Ggrosso's topic in 2010-2015 Archive
Hi. I'm not an NAU graduate. I live in crime-ridden overcrowded Phoenix, AZ and have been to NAU once and Flagstaff lots of times. It's a small town with lots of pine trees. We Phoenicians, who are used to 115 degree summers, find Flagstaff to be cold. I would love to live there but it's too expensive. However, I think they have a pretty good housing plan for students--even students with families. But you probably already know that. Good luck! -
Rejected--on my birthday no less!

Thank you everyone. At first i was stunned. Needless to say, I didn't bother to do anything for my birthday. Now I just feel resentment and a loss of self-confidence. But, I'll be more prepared for the next round. Good luck to all of you! -
Rejected. Can I reuse LORs next year?
waitinginvain? replied to waitinginvain?'s topic in Letters of Recommendation
"I'm a bit confused on this from your post, since you mention in point one that they'd be updated, of course, but then ask whether you'd go to the school or the professor... And for them to be updated, you'd have to go to the professor. You're right; I'm not thinking straight. (Must be the rejection!) I guess I'll contact the professors and tell them I was rejected. See what they have to say about writing me new letters for the next round. Thank you everyone for the valuable advice. -
I was rejected this year, but am thinking about applying to different schools next year. I have two questions regading the LOR: 1. Can we use the same letters (updated, of course) to apply to a different school next year? 2. Who do we ask for our letters? The school or the letter writer? One of my recommenders sent me the letter and also sent a copy to the school. The others sent the letters directly to the school, so I don't have access to them. Thank you!

Rejected--on my birthday no less!

Thank you! -
I've finally heard from ASU that I was rejected. I know from the results survey that someone was chosen on March 2nd. So, I suspected it would end this way. Oh well, at least the suspense is over and I can get on with my life.

Thank you for your kind words.

Congratulations to you both. That's great news!

Another ASU hopeful, eh? What's up with them?

Does it matter if you were a "First Pick" or not?

Skweeder: $57000 a semester? Do you mean $5700? -

I'm not sure if I'm even on the waitlist! But based on my posts, another poster said I was, so I'll assume I am. I have mixed feelings about it. I graduated summa cum laude with a 3.84 GPA. I've had one of my plays published and many more read/produced in New York, Los Angeles, Seattle, etc.. I was invited to take an independent study course in playwriting by the professor who heads the committee deciding whether or not to admit me to the dramatic writing MFA program. (I applied at my alma mater.) So, I take the "rejection" personally. I can't help but wonder what I did wrong while I was an undergrad. Or is it something else: My personality? My age? (I'm 50.) My gender? My sexual preference? My pride makes me want to tell them to shove it up their @sses. I don't NEED a degree to write plays. On the other hand, I'm not going to pass up what may be my last chance to go to grad school to fulfill my dream of having an MFA in dramatic writing. So I'm willing to swallow my pride to get what I want out of life. In the end, no one (except me) will know that I wasn't their top choice. And who knows, given the chance, I may end up being the best student there. -
Longer Wait Mean Reduced Chances?

Thank you for your encouraging words. -
I contacted the school and received a reply that they are waiting on a response from another candidate and that (his/her response) "will shift things around a little." In other words, it's still a waiting game. I should add that the deadline was February 1st, and recommendations were supposed to have been made by March 15th. So, in my case, it's not so late in the game. But I now know, as I suspected, that I am not a top candidate. Oh well. I would consider myself fortunate if I were chosen, whether I was their first or a last choice. I don't care, I would get the same education and opportunities.

I know there is an old thread about playwriting MFA hopefuls. But what about now? Anybody out there? I would especially like to hear from the person who was accepted into ASU's dramatic arts program.
-
sansao, I am in Arizona too and am also still waiting to hear (from ASU). Maybe Arizona time is different from the rest of the world?

This will be a good week. Say it with me.

I will get accepted this week. My birthday is coming up too, so maybe I'll have good luck like SLP-Allie. -
Thank you. I'll get the nerve and contact the graduate director tomorrow--if I'm not notified by then. Good luck to you, too!

Is that allowable?

I submitted this post under a different heading, but thought it would be more applicable here. I applied for the MFA in playwriting at ASU. Their web page said recommendations were made by March 15th. I see on the survey results page that someone was accepted into the program on March 2nd. My status still says "in review." I read somewhere that schools choose their top candidates first. I can infer that I'm not one of them. But is there still a chance I'll get accepted? I should add that I have my BA from ASU; I graduated summa cum laude, and I have taken an independent study class with the professor who now heads the program. Thanks in advance for any words of wisdom!
