  1. I'm with my fellow east-coaster, Dal PhDer. Food is the one thing I try not to skimp on. One thing I do is roast a whole chicken, and then it's good for supper, and a couple of lunches (a la chicken salad sandwiches). Here's how I roast my butter chicken: - Preheat oven to 425F. - Melt a half pound of butter in a pan, add garlic, onion powder, chives, pepper, and a bit of salt. - Baste chicken using half of the melted butter mix, roast chicken for 30 mins. Take it out and baste it with the rest of the butter mix. Roast it for another 30 mins. Then baste it in its own juices, and roast it for a final 30 mins. Turn the heat up for 450 for the last 10 mins to get a crispier skin. It's really, really delicious, sets you up for a few meals, and doesn't cost more than $11 or $12.
  2. Haha Yea, I would be very, very surprised if it wasn't interesting to a marketing department..or gender studies. It really is a fantastic show. I think I was hooked from the first 5 minutes. Plus, RJD2 is an amazing producer, and I love the theme.
  3. It's almost always worth applying. It's impossible to know all the circumstances that surround the applications the department receives. Someone may get rejected one year, but be at the top of the pile the next. Also, the most important parts of a grad school application are the letters of recommendation, the statement of interest, and, if the dept. requires it, the writing sample. But the biggest part is having really strong letter of recommendation. My cumulative GPA was 2.4 or so, but I got into an excellent MA program with lots of funding. It's worth a shot!
  4. I've been watching Mad Men. LOVE it. Other than that, tyring to work my way through Game of Thrones, though it's harder than I'd anticipated, given how much everyone seems to love it.
  5. Good call above with Ann Patchett! She's a wonderful author. Bel Canto is amazing, and Run is really good too! I tried reading Gulliver's Travels, but gave up after about 150 pages. I found the "novel"ty (har dee har har) wore off fairly quickly. Cool concept for a story, but it draaaagged. At the moment I'm reading The Great Gatsby. Loooooove it! F. Scott Fitzgerald is a brilliant writer.
  6. If you want to enjoy Ramen, just eat Ramen like a boss by following these steps: 1. Boil some water 2. Eat raw noodles 3. Drink boiling water 4. Snort flavoured poweder Juuuuust kidding. Flying them up with some veggies is delicious though. I find that cooking them up with sesame oil is key...really adds a nice flavour.

  10. Yup yup, I'm stoked too! When I was trying decided which school's offer to accept, I was told by a current Ryerson grad student was we had access to the U of T library, and learning that was definitely a game-changer!
  11. I've heard the libraries there are amazing! A few months ago, while living in Chicago, I went to the Northwestern library a few times. It's pretty sweet. Just loads and loads of books.
  12. Yes, please do! I'll be keen to find out!
  13. My fingers are crossed for ya! What area(s) of philosophy interest you?
  14. I don't mind at all! My cumulative GPA was actually only 2.36...but in the final two years of my BA, my GPA was somewhere between 3.8 and 3.9. I'm currently in F'ton, NB. Where are you finishing up your BA?
  15. Yup. I mean, I'm not going to U of T...But I'm going to Ryerson U. (for Philosophy) in Toronto. Can't wait!
  16. Hey, all! Accepted an offer from Ryerson for my MA in Philosophy...excited to move to Toronto for the first time, but also nervous! Anyone else headed that way in the fall?
  17. I agree with what was said above. Planning for the move is a great distraction! I, too, got into my first choice school, but also a couple others...it took me a while to decide, and even though I've now made up my mind and submitted my acceptance, I'm still super nervous I made the wrong choice. But, I'm just thinking ahead to the big move, and that seems to be serving as a great distraction for now! Anyway, feeling doubts is normal...regardless of where you choose to go. Imagine how much MORE doubt you'd be feeling if you'd accepted an offer from a school that wasn't your dream school!
