Waiting it Out on Canadian Universities - 2012
NeeNee replied to NoMoreABD's topic in Waiting it Out
I got rejected from U of T, I am not too bummed because I realized that I would much rather do an academic masters that would prepare me for a phD in urban sociology. Also I have deferred my acceptance to Cambridge for a semester, let us see how that works out! Congratulations to everyone who got in! something to be proud of. I definitely didn't have the experience in the field. -
Waiting it Out on Canadian Universities - 2012
NeeNee replied to NoMoreABD's topic in Waiting it Out
I phoned Anita, and she said nothing to me, she said she would be on the look out and acceptances for second round went on last Wednesday. I don't plan on going anyways, as I have chosen to do an academic masters instead! But good luck to all those waiting! Keep your head up -
Canadian Universities MSW. The waiting game 2012 admissions

^It can be advanced standing. -
There is no harm in applying, in my freshman year I had many grades that were not up to par, and one that was just a fail. I worked my but off to get my GPA back up, by my last year it was 3.85, and cGPA was around 3.3. You have all this experience, which is a plus! I don't have much experience, but I got in to a environmental studies program (and my major is sociology) and also in to Cambridge (UK)- a school which, if you go on their website, make it pretty explicit that no amount of extra curricular makes up for low GPA standing (they said in bold never makes up) and they do not prefer all-rounder applicants. My point is, even with my first year screwed up, Cambridge looked past it and I am sure other schools will look past it for you. Especially since Global Health looks for experience. Good luck!

It really depends on the school, I talked to my prof who graduated with a phD from Chicago School and my interest lie in environmental structures and their influences on health- that is something that fits right in with Chicago! UC Berk is very theory driven, and Madison is running out of money. He also recommended Harvard and told me great profs he has worked with at each. Currently I am doing a masters in environmental studies, with a thesis based around using GIS to measure health in a community. He told me your masters will look like you have a very specific goal in mind, which is what phD departments want to see. I am really hoping to get in to Chicago after my masters!

Hey guys! So I was conflicted between several options. This was my last year as an undergraduate at McGill University- I am a major in sociology. I always wanted to be an academic, but as time went on my interest went up and down, and I was soon ambivalent towards the idea. I thought policy would be a better fit for me, and I enthusiastically applied for MPP at University of Toronto. However, I am very interested in environmental studies, and also applied to MES Planning at York. As I still couldn't quite let the dream of becoming an academic go, I applied to Cambridge (UK) as well for MPhil-Sociolgy, with no hope of getting in. I got in to all three, and how happy I was about Cambridge, I just cannot describe. Unfortunately Cambridge came with a huge price tag and no funding as I was a student who was taken off the waitlist. It really breaks my heart that I cannot go there, it is such a dream! However, I haven't given up hope and hope to pursue it later on. I recently realized I am not interested in policy as I thought, and the reason academia had been nagging at my head was because I want to do my phD. Therefore I chose York, while speaking to people there, York's Environmental Studies masters is both academic and professional. You have to do research, but you can choose to do a thesis (or alternatives.) I decided it would be better to do a thesis and apply for a phD in sociology or environmental studies (maybe do a concentration in environmental sociology...hopefully Cambridge, UC Berkley) Was this the right decision? I feel confident, but at times I do not.

The deadline for York has passed and I accepted but the person there told me you can back out of the program later on.

Thank you very much!! I guess I want to go in to MPP because my interest in academics is somewhat ambivalent. I want this as a back up but do not want to rule out the option altogether. My MES at York, although a professional degree because of urban planning requires a thesis and research. So I still take that in to account, maybe it is the influence of Cambridge, won't leave my head and has revived my love for academia momentarily.

Hey Lexipedia! I am really perplexed now, as I was wondering will a masters in public policy make it harder for me to do a phD later on? I got accepted in to Cambridge a couple of days back, with no funding, but am looking for ways to get funded. However, I will most likely reject them because of the lack of funding, but it has been my dream and I would love to reapply and get in again (later in the future.)

Okay, Anita told me Wednesday now, the man who answers the general phone calls is of no help! @ Misgengen: I have no idea? Did you call the school? I didn't apply there.

Apparently offers won't be out until another 2 weeks...

Accepted! Cambridge MPhil in Sociology! What a long wait, after not getting first round and eventually ending up being waitlisted, I have gotten in! Problem is with no funding (go figure) but do I choose Cambridge? I cannot afford the minimum $70 000/year. I am a Canadian student and this may seem reasonable to some people, but not me. Does anybody know anything about Cambridge? How much bursary money they give? In actuality I applied to the most expensive college which has the highest college fees over top of the tuition fees. Their conditional acceptance is not only on GPA but also on financial, meaning I must prove I can fund my education. =( HELP! Anything appreciated!

What if a better offer comes along after the deadline?
NeeNee replied to mresene's topic in Waiting it Out
I called the school I was accepted to and they said I can let them know as soon as possible if I want to withdraw from accepting. This is what I will most likely do if I get accepted to my other program.- 22 replies

Thanks BlueParade, if I do get in I think I will be stuck with my decision...

My friend got good funding from MPP, but she had no word from MGA so she didn't know what to choose.

Thanks so much lexipedia. They really doubled the size, that is good to know! I guess Anita won't be in today, but I will call her soon. And haha! Thanks for letting me know the guy is useless. Ahhhhh no funding, $15 for two or one year? I actually have a full scholarship from York and a guaranteed RA/TA ship...this is making me a little thoughtful now because I used to think for sure I would choose U of T. However now I am not so sure.

Canadian Universities MSW. The waiting game 2012 admissions
NeeNee replied to MSW13's topic in Social Workers Forum
I hope everyone is keeping their head up! My friend is at York MSW and she loves it, but she got accepted 3rd week of April I believe (that is probably because of limited spots.) I looked at her statement of purpose and she was very interested in policy implications, and broader causes of inequality (someone mentioned York was more interested in that stream.) That is what she structured her statement of purpose on, she did a bachelors in social work at McGill and her example was dealing with cultural issues in the social work sphere. I hope that helps in seeing if you are what York looks for! My other friend was rejected out of Laurier, but when she phoned to find out, they had many advance standing applicants with lots of experience, so don't let that be an indication of if you get in to York or U of T. -
I am a student of McGill and this is my first year applying (and I know for many people it takes applying a second year to get in) but Masters Public Policy Program at Toronto has really been getting me frustrated. The man on the phone told me 3 weeks ago that first round has gone out and acceptance for second will be next week, next week, next week. I just want to know! I got in to York Environmental Studies in Planning, which was super awesome and am glad the professors were interested in my thesis! However with U of T I am waiting...I guess it is a popular program so not many will reject the offer from the first round? Some stats...for my chances? 3.85 GPA in final year Working with NGOs experience, a lot of on campus experience (especially with campus politics) And I believe two great references Anyone else in the same boat?
