Ah! How I wish I had your goof fortune!
I sell suburbanite-rich-white-folks overpriced pastries and coffee. All with a dangerously superficial smile on my face and a precipitously balanced artificial interest and delight in the intricacies of my customers' lives.

    Good times.

Although, it has become a little more bearable knowing that the end is in sight.

Oh man, this stuff drives me crazy. Some schools' sites it takes me a full half hour to find the information I'm looking for.

I'm almost starting to judge schools based on their websites.

Hear, hear. Plus, beef probably kills more trees than do books. I love beef as well. I'm not a very tree-friendly tree-hugger it appears. The stench of hypocrisy is surprisingly delicious.

I'm a little old school for kindle... I need something tangible to hold!
Buying the books that are intergral to my thesis/dissertation and the classics in my field is a no-brainer. I suppose I'm more concerned about the sources I don't think I'll be using much. Oh well. I'll likely end up buying most of them if only for fear I'll need them later.
That's a great point about the notes though, StrangeLight--I'd probably benefit from writing more out than scribbling in the margins.

Them: You need to fill out the online form and submit it via e-mail.
Me: I've already filled out the form (here it is!), and on your website it says you can submit it in person.
Them: Sorry, you have to go send it via e-mail.
Me: If I send it via e-mail, who will receive it?
    Them: I will receive it.
Me: Okay. And then you will print it?
    Them: Yes.
Me: And then you'll be able to answer my questions?
    Them: Yes.
Me: (holding out printed, complete form)...
Them: Sorry, but it needs to be done via e-mail.
    Me: But I'm Right. Here.
Them: It has to be via e-mail.
Me: (grabs blackberry) I'll e-mail a copy to you right now. As I'm standing here. You'll have it within 5 seconds.
Them: Sorry. You have to go home and e-mail it to me (walks away).
    Me: HEADDESK.

I get that a lot, actually. I don't really ming being a "career student" though. In fact, I really think it's great. I love reading, learning, arguing, and hanging out with other people who don't just put up with my history-dorkiness, but will engage in lively conversation about it. By continuing school, I'm not avoiding the "real world," I'm just involved in a different kind--preparing for a different kind of life.

Does she regret not finishing her degree? Is she stuck in a kind of "life rut" she can't get out of? Obviously, I don't know anything about her or her educational history, but I have generally found that when a person make comments like this, it is likely in response to his/her own issues (whether s/he is cognizant of that or not) rather than a critique of your plans and decisions.

What I personally find most difficult about these situations is not offending them. People tend to regard some graduate students/PhDs (and I find this most prevalent if continuining in the humanities...) as stuck-up and elitist.

Thanks for all the advice guys! For anyone who is interested, I mentioned it to my POI (he asked if I had ever been to the city before) and he was totally cool with it. He said I should have let him know earlier and he would have scheduled my return flight for later so I could spend an extra day with my boyfriend.
