  1. Well uic told me I'd know by Wednesday. That day has come and gone with nothing. I'm assuming the run around is a no
  2. Well the deadline was in mid jan and I applied before then. I was supposed to hear from uic today per the program director. But nothing. I understand the backlog but I think by almost may it's time to crap or get off the pot
  3. My parents are convinced I'll never work full time. Never mind I'm the only one of my siblings with a degree in under 5 years and in the entire extended family to get a phd
  4. I haven't heard back from 2 of them. I called one who told me I should know by Wednesday. I would be nice to get in one of these three because it would be easier on my little guy. I just thought there would be some kind of letter if it was a no
  5. Hehe I'm pretty sure mine ended up in an "floor inbox". I called one school yesterday and they I would know by Wednesday. I have the feeling rejection is coming. I have no idea what one school is doing I finished my application 2 months before it was due and it's been silence.
  6. This isn't true for all programs. My phd fellowship specifically prohibits any working outside the program and there is no doubling up. That's not always an option. I do agree with picking up a part time job because if it is just you, 2 jobs isn't hard. We get a pretty generous one at 23k per year so I think we can manage. I'll be managing one person on that and I know I'll be fine. I'm used to living on much less per month with a kid so I know how to be frugal. I cook often so that's no issue. I'm not a heavy drinker so going out isn't a problem. Luckily I'll be in a city with a low cost of living so that helps.
  7. I'm Glad it all works out for you. Go have a beer and celebrate before the next freak out
  8. I am from Chicago and I'll say $20k will be tough. Living on campus there is a must since the surrounding neighborhood is less than stellar. I'd say another 10k in housing costs would be reasonable because a 1 bedroom will be about $800-$850. Can you find a roommate
  9. I'm shut out. I accepted a school but I really wanted to hear back from one of schools in Illinois. I applied mid jan for feb deadlines. Wtf. Not even a " no rejected or you're on the wait list" NOTHING. pop poo
  10. Thanks. THe fully funded program that i am in is out of state. I have a school age child that really likes being near his cousins and such. I was hoping to keep him growing up near his support system. But we will brave the new world and move to Ky from Illinois.... I still have my fingers crossed for uic.. even as i prepare to fax an apartment application to louisville

  12. I would just accept. Your funding sounds awesome and I would accept the sure thing. I did the same thing the program I was hoping to hear back from hasn't sent me anything while the program I accepted was a shot in the dark. An excellent program is an excellent program so take it
  13. My research advisor went to duke.. he loves it and always raves about it
  14. So I wanted to know if this has happened to anyone.I applied to 8 programs. I got accepted to a program that is out of state , but i stil have applications pending with 3 schools in state. I have been checking online to my status, but no change from being reviewed by the department.. My applications were complete before the deadline and i havent heard a yay or nay, not even a your waitlisted.. Just nothing. I have contacted the department twice and gotten nothing as far as a status update or some progression in the process.. Some apps were complete in early Jan and still nothing... I was just wondering if anyone has dealt with this. Or never heard the official no from a department. I am assuming its a no since we are at the deadline for acceptance. I told the out of state school yes, but i was hoping to stay in state. Thanks.
  15. I had a less than stellar undergrad gpa and was interested in phd in pharmacology. I went into an MS program at a decent school in biology and got heavily involved in research and as a teaching assistant. I made sure I got involved in just About everything science based and got good letters of recommendation. I think one of the things you have to be ok with is rejection even though you have worked hard to prove yourself but are still held in low ranks because of undergrad issues. I was accepted to only school with decently competitive GRE scores (1300) and a graduate gpa of 3.63. I would also amend the type of program you apply to. While neuroscience may be your first choice, perhaps you could consider a biology program and tailor your phd research around neuroscience based project. I also took a hit on the schools I wanted to apply to. I knew schools like UChicago were out for me because there was way too much competition. There r ways to get to the degree you want but you have to be focused and consider alternative pathways
  16. Hi... I am new here but wanted to give my stats as a sub 3.0 undergrad Undergrad- Chemistry 2.7 overall, 3.0 in sciences Masters GPA =3.6 Biology GRE-V=158 ,Q=155 writing =4.5 Work experience- 3 years as a teaching assistant/tutor both at undergraduate and graduate level, professional work experience in the chemical environment working as a lab manager Research conducted at both undergrad and grad levels- working on a paper for grad level Applied to all Ph.D. UIC-GEMS=Pharmacology, UCincinnati- Pathology, U of Louisville- IGPBM- Pharmacology, Rosalin Franklin- Pharmacology, Purdue- PULSE program, NIU- Biochem, IIT- Biochem, Rush- Pharmacology Results UIC, NIU- waitlisted Rejected from UCincinnati, Purdue, RF and probably Rush( havent heard boo word back from them) Accepted to IIT for a second masters( declined), U of Louisville Ph.D fully funded and accepted I am still hoping for UIC so i wont have to move, but frankly a change would do me good ( love the Sheryl Crow song) I think what helped me was taking a break after undergrad to work and really get my priorities in order then returning to a mid institution to get a masters and show what i can handle. I also think not getting overly adventurous with where i was applying given my undergrad issues helped me a lot to gain acceptance to a good(in my opinion) school. While I am doing well in my MS program, when i interviewed i still had to account for issues in my past. I think it is best to acknowledge them and move forward and show who you are now is not who you were before. My next step is to move up a realm for the post-doc to a UChicago or Rush or something like that. For me the journey has been taking baby steps to where i want to be and it has worked for me thus far. Happy Acceptance Times Pp1
