I guess I'm not so small I'm one of 5 in the department. In the total program there is 25 per year. 5 disciplines and max 5 students/ year -
PhD supervisor going on sabbatical -- before I even start
prettyuff1 replied to paso's topic in Research
there is a professor who is moving to my university with a phd student. he is staying on as an adjunct with his old university until the student graduates. His grant funding pays her stipend at the new university. What is your area of interest? -
I just met an Public health professor at a major university whose phd is in anthropology. I think you can do anything as long as you keep up your research and gpa

For my program, the department an informational session with faculty during the orientation week It details their available labs and their interests.. i also have a list from what i have seen on the website and discussing with current students.

This is what I'm doing. I was able to secure one with a PI I was interested in. I met with her right after I was admitted. If I didn't have that, I'd be working in a lab over the summer.

Work hard

I am moving like 300miles from Chicago to Louisville for a PhD I wanted to get a feel for the city, so I am moving into furnished on-campus graduate housing. I didn't want to have to run around and find a place when i am not 100 % familiar with the area. I will be moving out at the end of this term to find my more permanent digs.

time out

When I did my masters I just started very vague. I knew who I wanted to work with and what this PI's interests were. From there, he gave me a few tasks and overviews in his lab and I got started. It was only after I had conducted a few experiments that I really got my gears turning and started to put together a research plan. I think you have to really have a good feel for the lab you work in and have just a couple of smaller projects that get your gears turning as far as what you wanna do and moving forward you can go from there. It's good to be prepared but most professors I know just expect you to come in with a decent idea. I mean you never know. What you plan on doing initially may not be where you end up.

VCU cannot locate my reference forms *PISSED

I have been faced with this. It was a similar situation. The graduate college recieved my application before the application date and forwarded it to the department before the application deadline.. after numerous contacts with the department, they said they lost my application. Since i was accepted some where else i let it go. If i were you, I would discuss this with an admissions director and department chair and all higher ups... Consider contacting the dean of students as well.. I would get all of my emails and files in order as proof. I wouldnt go to legal action with them right away, but i would emphasize that you really want to attend their school and that you met the requirements and that it was a fault on their end that caused the delay -
I got off the waitlist and into the garbage can lol. * Marv Albert voice* rejected

Welp i got rejected at UIC.. poo poo

Sh*t people say when you are applying to grad school
prettyuff1 replied to Clou12's topic in Waiting it Out
It is pretty useless in Biology/ Chemistry.. You'll start as a lab tech making $11/hr with no room to really advance to R&D with out an advanced degree. -
one school that i haven't heard back from told me that my " application slipped through the cracks" even though i applied on time and they have record of it. can you contact the program advisor just to check on status and make sure they have everything
-
I am   with them....
-
Well a second program in limbo got back with me.. they said my " application fell through the cracks" and that they are currently reviewing it with other late applicants.. but i finished the application on time and their system confirms that... oh well
-
i kind of thought it meant they had invited a second pool for interviews. I know they have already considered one round of interviews and this is round 2 or 3... anyway it is kind of the confirmation i need that i should give up on staying in chicago. The other school i spoke with that said they would call me back today didn't It is difficult not to take it personally but it does kinda suck
-
i m pretty sure i just got rejected.. UIC told me this "Prettypuff1: Hello, the committee decided to interview a last set of students before making the second round of offers. As a result they will be interviewing next week and then will meet to make decisions. I'm sorry but I have no other information to offer you at the moment." i didnt get offered an interview so.. no offer for me.. oh well
-
I called NIU and they seemed surprise that there was no action on my file.. I am calling UIC and this will be the last time i call them. I feel i have gotten the run around a few times wit them and it isnt really worth it.

is there a May support group. or is that the rejected forum lol

Great to see this thread. I'm a 2.7 undergrad in chemistry and 3.6 grad ms in biochem with a 315/4.5 GRE score. What helped me was working and putting substance between me and undergrad. I also made sure I applied to realistic options for my situation. I was prepared for rejection but I got into a fully funded phd program in pharmacology.

2/7 I applied to 7 got accepted to 2, rejected by two and have 3 in no mans land.

Bump. I'll be moving here in May

It could be but by then I'll already have a lease signed to live in Louisville. I think this is the universe telling me it's time to move on from Chicago
