  1. Hi! I actually started a thread two posts down. Right now I'm looking at Canadian WGS MA programs. I'd love to live internationally again and Canadian unis offer more funding at the MA-level generally. My tentative plan is to pursue a Soc PhD in the long-term. I'm coming from a non-Soc background so I'm looking at Women's Studies programs to bridge the gap and to further pursue my current research interests. I'm also a big fan of the Sociology program at Santa Barbara. The Feminist Studies program looks great, but I do have some concerns about placement. At the moment I'm piecing together my statement of purpose. Time to put the kettle on for a tea break!
  2. Now that I've begun this round of applications, I thought it would be a good time to start a thread for all of the WGS folks this year. Anyone else applying for Women's/Gender/Sexuality Studies? I'm primarily looking at Canadian MA programs. Cheers!
  3. Indiana notified me I am not receiving funding for their program this week. Unfortunately, this takes me out of the race so to speak. Hope everyone else has had better news. Best of luck to you all!
  4. Seconding Main Street Armory and Bug Jar. You may also enjoy looking through the Jayceland blog. Each week he updates it with various cultural/musical events going on in the area. You may have luck checking out smaller coffee shop venues as well. I'm fairly certain that Boulder commonly hosts live performances as well as Spot coffee. Here's the link to Jayceland if anyone is interested: http://jayceland.com/blog/
  5. Is anyone else experiencing cold feet at the thought of taking on so much additional debt? While in general, I know it's easier to fund instate programs with concurrent employment, my instate option still looks like quite the financial burden. Between covering tuition and fees, supplies, purchasing a vehichle for travel (seems like a necessity with few public transit options and a required internship), living expenses, health insurance, and any extra purchases that may pop up, I think I may easily have to take out an additional 30k* in loans. Is anyone else facing a similar issue? How are you all dealing with the prospects of so-so job placement rates and the necessity of loans? Unfortunately I already have student loans from my undergrad so I'd like to limit the amount of grad loans I will need. Any thoughts? * this is hopefully on the high-end. I'd like to do an accelerated track to finish the program in less time, and I anticipate working part-time to allievate some of my living expenses.
  6. Indiana is my first choice. I'm waiting until next friday when funding offers go out for my program before making any official commitments. If all goes well, I think I will be in the midwest in the fall!
  7. For the Indiana admits: any news on funding yet? I know it's still early, but I'm getting antsy over making a final decision. Good luck to anyone still waiting to hear back!
  8. Congrats, everyone! I know it's still early, but has anyone made a final decision yet? Funding is going to be a final consideration, but I'm 90% certain I am attending Indiana in the fall regardless.
  9. Congrats on your acceptance! Did you hear by email?
  10. I recently submitted applications to Indiana and my local state program as a financial back-up.
  11. Hello all, I'm a senior looking into library programs for the Fall 2013 application cycle. I'm beginning to work on my applications and I'm not sure how to approach the statement of purpose portion. What makes a good SOP for library science? Is it necessary to mention specific Professors or classes? The non-MLS grad programs I've been looking into are research-based so I have a better idea of how to approach those. I'm planning to discuss my work experience and my general career goals. Any tips or suggestions would very much be appreciated. Thank you!
  12. Do you really need to shorten the paper to 5 pages? If the paper length is still less than the maximum number of pages, I don't see a need to cut a large section of the paper completely just to make 5 pages. I would cut out any fluff you see and go from there.

  14. Backup plan for me: If I don't get into grad school with full funding, I'm going to teach english abroad or apply for my local americorps. If I don't stay local, I'll apply for a few environmental-themed americorps programs out of state or teaching fellowship program I found in San Francisco.
  15. I'll be applying for an ETA for Germany as an at-large candidate. Good luck to everyone!
  16. Does anyone know how long it generally takes for the document approval check to be finished? I'm sure it's very busy at the central office. Does a month sound like the right time-frame for people that have already gone through the process? Thanks!
  17. Sorry to bump an old post. I'm sort of familiar with the area. Have you contact reslife yet? I'm not sure if the university offers grad housing, but I do recall there being a message board for off-campus housing. If you contact the office, you'll be able to access it. Landlords sometimes used it to post openings in houses and appartments. If you'll have a car, I also recommend looking into the surrounding towns. Housing in Fredonia can be hit or miss - some of the apartment complexs are typical student slums and the undergrads there do enjoy their parties! I only spent a few months in the area so I'm not sure I can offer anymore help. Best of luck!
  18. Thank you for the reassurance. I believe these three professors know me the best out of everyone at my school. I should be able to get three solid recommendations at the very least. The rest is up to the adcoms anyway! Thank you for sharing your experience. I'm glad it worked out for you. I think at this point, these may be my three strongest options.I just need to ask my German culture professor, but I don't think that should be an issue. Thank you again!
  19. I have a question about LORs. Please let me know if this isn't appropriate for this thread. Is it absolutely necessary to have recommendations from multiple History professors? I believe I can get three solid recommendations, but two of the professors in question are in disciplines outside of History (German and Women's Studies). My current plan is to ask my "mentor" in the History department for a rec. I've taken multiple courses with him and I've discussed my future plans in detail with this professor. I believe he has a strong grasp of my research interests and potential as a historian. I also intend to ask my Women's Studies advisor and my language advisor for LORs. Both professors have expressed an interest in my future plans and have been very supportive of my academic goals. My dilemma is that some of the programs I'm interested in require three recommendations. Will it be an issue having two recommendations from scholars outside of my field? At this time I don't think think I'll have a strong enough relationship with another history professor before the Fall 2013 application deadlines. Ideally I would have my actual History advisor write me a rec, but I won't be taking my thesis seminar until Spring 2013. Generally he doesn't write recommendations until he's taught a student three times. Does anyone have any experience with this? I think the two non-History professors have a good grasp of my interests outside of history. Generally I've taken an interdisciplinary approach within their classes by combining my interests in history and their respective disciplines. Thanks!
  20. Oy! I'm sorry you went through that. Louisville isn't my top choice, but that doesn't sound like the most queer friendly of places. I also may be biased because I'm coming from a very accepting area of NY. Thank you for sharing your experience!
  21. Seconding the question about Louisville, KY! I know KY is fairly conservative on the whole, but is Louisville an exception?
  22. I've decided to throw my hat in ring for Fall 2013 as well. Right now I'm trying to figure out my SOPs and prepare for the GRE. I believe my list of schools is pretty much set. These forums have been a huge source of information already. I'm looking forward to going through this process with you all!
  23. Oh, shoot. Well, that makes sense since they've both been in the field for quite some time. Thank you for the heads up! I'm mostly interested in Social/Cultural history. I'm not sure if I've looked into LSU before, but I will certainly give it a look. Thank you for information and the suggestions! I haven't given southern schools much consideration, but it sounds like LSU may be an interesting option.
  24. Congrats! I do remember looking through Miami Ohio's faculty page before. I'll have to give it another look through to see if anyone's research catches my eye. I haven't considered many Canadian unis. I have looked into U of T and McGill, but I'll have to expand my search. Thanks for the suggestion! I'm definitely interested in Chapel Hill, but to my understanding UNC doesn't offer terminal masters. For the PhD program, it's on the top of my "reach" list. The program there looks interesting - hello, Christopher Browning! I'm not as familiar with Indiana. I did see that they offer a few MAs, but the two terminal MAs look like they are geared toward US/Eastern European history. I'll have to look into their FLAS program. Thank you for the suggestions! I totally agree with you about German cases. Studying German makes me wish I had a deeper interest in Italian history if only because the language is less intense.
  25. Thank you for the suggestions! The program at University of Louisville looks like a great match overall. I'll be sure to keep Northern Colorado on my list as well. I'm glad to see both schools have scholars that study gender, that's right up my alley.
