  1. Just got my first rejection. OHSU. Ouch
  2. 3. Congratulations on all the interviews! I'm trying hard not to get discouraged as I'm seeing most of the programs I've applied to have sent invites now. I hope in reality there are some that will be on a rolling basis and not all at once. When do schools start sending rejections? I'm assuming after they've gotten confirmation that the people the invite will actually come to interview? Has anyone heard from NYU, BU, UCSD or CU Boulder?
  4. Yep, Vanderbilt sent me a full color calendar
  5. No word from OHSU here, but would really, really love an invite there. Good to hear none have been sent yet...
  6. I contacted 2 PIs at Emory who were perfect matches for me research-wise and they were very responsive. One I've met with since then, (the day before I got my interview invite) although he'd said that he has no influence over who got an interview.
  7. @stmwap: When I spoke with Dr. Bassell at Emory he did not ask if I was interested, just told me I'd been selected to interview. He did not give me dates, but said February and that we'd be receiving an email with more details. Don't know about UCSF because I didn't get an email, but I sure wish I did...
  8. Congratulations to you both! Did it come via email?
  9. I enjoyed the weekend break from neurotic email checking. Oh well, back to it. I've heard that a few programs interview in January. I would assume they have to notify soon to allow for buying flights and all?
  10. Sorry for the crossposting, but since it came up on 3 different threads, I hope it's ok. Emory is notifying people by phone today and will invite a total of 40 people
  11. They're calling people today with interview invites for the Neuroscience program, although I'm not sure if today is the only day. They said it's a total of 40 interviewees.
  12. I can't believe it! I just received an interview invite to Emory! They're notifying people by phone so if you get a call from a 404 number, by all means, answer it!
  13. Congratulations!!! I hope I can join this club sometime soon. It's also a huge reach for me.
  14. You and I have very similar stats (and identical GRE scores) and like the previous poster, I decided not to apply to safety schools. I want a program/lab that I'm really excited about and that's a great fit, but it's a personal decision. I also have readied myself to possibly do this again next year (fingers crossed that I don't).
  15. I think I'd be really psyched to get an email like that. It looks like you got their attention. Best of luck to you!
  16. The only one who is more certain than I am that I'm losing my mind is my husband. The waiting is bad enough looking at it from the inside. I can't imagine what it looks like from the outside.
  17. I applied to 11 Neuroscience and 2 Biomed programs and haven't heard anything yet. Someone said on another thread that Vanderbilt IGP sent out 2 rounds of interview invites on Dec 5 & 10 (I think). Congrats on the interview at UPenn! I applied there as well. I know a couple programs (like UCSF) say that no one will be notified until January, but maybe they just say that to keep people from calling to ask. All I know is that the waiting part really sucks.
  18. My heart jumps every time I hear an email come in. It's far too early for me to be doing that
  19. The Admissions Chair actually told me that final decisions were being made today. Not sure if that means that interview invites go today, but I'd guess very soon. I would also assume that depending on who accepts and declines interviews, they probably send additional ones later on, although that's just speculation on my part. It's a reach school for me as well, but I'm local so thought I'd give it a shot. I hadn't heard that they're not friendly toward international applicants, but I wouldn't consider yourself rejected. And yes, I sure do wish I had this information on the other programs I'm applying to
  20. During the application process I was told that they choose who will get an interview invite by Dec 11 (today). I thought I'd start a thread to see if/when anyone had heard from them. Any other Emory Neuro applicants around?
  21. I pulled common GRE word lists that I found online and copied and pasted into lists of 30 words each in brainscape.com. Then I loaded them on my phone and learned a 30 word list a day. That, combined with practice tests that gave me feedback and studying latin word roots got me from 53rd percentile in my first practice test to the 86th on my actual GRE in about 5 weeks. It was a lot of work, but paid off
  22. Thank you, that is great to hear. I was beginning to wonder if I should bother submitting my apps to those schools. Worse, I've been amending my goal statement (just slightly) based on who I talked to. Here's hoping I don't have to, but if I have to reapply next year I will be really good at it.
  23. I'm applying to neuroscience programs for the first time and have repeatedly been advised to contact labs I'd be interested in working in at the school I'm applying to. The way it's been explained to me is that if no one is looking out for your application, you'll most likely go unnoticed (and unaccepted). I contacted labs of interest but there were a couple of programs where I didn't get a reply. My questions are: 1. Has anyone been accepted to a school where they didn't try to contact or didn't successfully contact a PI? 2. How does this work with programs that have mandatory first year lab rotations? I got a couple responses from PIs who couldn't say if they'd be accepting students because by the time I finished rotations it would be late 2014.
  24. Congrats! I have 8 done and 3 to go. Excited to be done....but then I wait. Ugh
  25. Also, your letter writers can see if you have waived your right to view the letter. One of my letter writers told me that if I didn't waive it, it indicated that I was concerned that he might not write a favorable letter. If that was the case I shouldn't ask him to write one. Although once they've already written it and go to upload it (which I think is when they'd see that you didn't waive it), I'm don't know if they'd change it....but possibly?
