Horror story: I was misled about funding for a PhD! Am I the only one?
Chukwu Chucks replied to zoterofan's topic in The Bank
"We will inform you in two weeks"....believe it or not....That's what they EXACTLY told me during graduate visit!!!! and yes, they did NOT tell me anything even in more than a month! until I sent email asking for the availability of the funding! And guess what's their answer: "We are unable to give you funds for now..." I agree with most of ppl here....It's really NOT COOL and UNETHICAL and UNPROFESSIONAL to leave the grad. recruit hanging without information! If they told me earlier, I would've had chance to apply to many different financial aids! and YES, out of 9-10 available qualified application, I missed like almost 4-5 of them!! (because some of them cost money, official transcript, delivery charge...etc)) This kind of conduct not only decreasing my chance to continue my grad. degree, but the worst is the amount of anxiety I experience! -
"Congratulations! You have been accepted to the School of Civil and Construction Engineering at <AN AMERICAN UNIVERSITY>. We are excited to have you join our School. This letter is to inform you that you are being considered for financial support from the School of CCE. This letter is to inform you that you are being considered for financial support from the School of CCE." This is a quote from the mail they sent me....is this right? or merely saying to encourage me to visit? in order to make some "promotional" move? What are you guys thought?

What people said when you told them you were accepted...

Mom: "Proud of you!" Friends: (multiple reaction): -> "Congratz!" with huge smile and hug -> "wow...." -> "That's legit!" -> *silence* and walk away Dad: (This is the best reaction EVER): -> "America?? don't get AIDS!" -
Im gonna start MS in CEM program on fall 2012....anybody at least coming for grad school in OSU on fall 2012?

"Both are fully funded offers." Europe and Singapore have the same level of research environment and cost of living. Taking Euro economy crisis into consideration, expect the cost of living in europe to increase! And if u dont like to be too far from home, better pick the one closer to ur hometown! But Since both are fully funded...ask urself this: 1) European girls or Singaporean girls? 2) "Café de l'Europe" or "Kopitiam" 3) British accent or Sing-lish? 4) Amsterdam red district or Orchard Road? 5) Italian Pizza or Singaporean spicy crab? your pick....

Does childrens of alumni REALLY get any advantage?
Chukwu Chucks replied to Chukwu Chucks's topic in The Lobby
I see....I can be considered as alumni's son if my Dad donate something.....I guess I'm not really an alumni's son then....lol -
My Dad went to OSU for Computer Science undergraduate program. I am applying for Graduate program in Construction Management. Do I actually get any advantage, based on the rumor I heard (hopefully not just rumor...lol). Does this really help boosting my chance to gain access to any benefit (funding, scholarship, etc)? besides having a good conversation with staff during grad. visit?

I was invited for a visit, but too bad ALL of recruits from my department (Construction Engineering) weren't given chances to meet the professors. Which kind of depressing since only recruits from one certain department (Geology) were assigned to meet some professors for individual interview. WHat is the chance of me getting funded?
-
I've received an email from graduate dept. stating that I have to send financial certificate before it's too late. So does it mean I don't get the funding for the first term? I'm still WAITING for funding announcement from my department. Out of all the process to get into graduate school, I have no problem with lengthy GRE/TOEFL test, letter of recommendations, application...etc etc...The hardest part on the process is definitely the WAITING PART!!!!

I've seen many type of student loans, but I don't know which one is the best suited for an international student pursuing graduate degree in America. Anybody wanna share any type of loan for international student? if there's any, how long is the coverage and the time needed to pay them back? Thanks

I heard the rumor about how master graduates have higher demand in job market....is it true though? I thought the masters are sometimes "over-qualified", some companies will prefer some B.S. even college drop out with experiences to do the job for cheaper salary. I'm just afraid my future master diploma of Construction Engineering Management will just end up in Ebay (just sarcasm for myself here)....I dont really have professional experience in Construction. Any comment?

Graduate assisstantship funding announcement?
Chukwu Chucks replied to Chukwu Chucks's topic in The Bank
Thanks for the reply! so all I need to do is wait until I got the announcement? but the school already ask for my financial statement though, Im just afraid I will be late to complete the application.... -
I've been accepted to Construction Engineering grad. program at Oregon State. All I need is my financial statement (since I'm international). The problem is, Im still waiting for announcement regarding the available teaching/research assisstantship vacancy. When do university usually announce the TA award? My program starts on Fall 2012 quarter (Sept. 26th 2012). Do they usually announce it like 1 - 2 months before the program starts? or even way later than that? Anybody who's a TA/RA wanna share experience? (ps: they invited me for a Graduate visit already, so hopefully the chance of winning is higher ) Thank you

We know that the cost for grad program is extremely high. Im not a billionaire (yet) therefore I need a financial aid, and I believe that either teaching/research assisstantship is the best choice for me. What im worried is that whether im gonna get the job or not.....what are the major factors to acquire the position? -> GPA? (I got 3.68/4 cum. gpa) -> Citizenship? (Im not American citizen) -> GRE scores? (520 verbal, 720 quant.) -> Whether you are alumni of the school or not? (from Montana State, going to Oregon State) -> TOEFL? (575 pbt) -> work experience (VERY little) Do I have chance? Im just really worried im not gonna get it.
