I was an undergrad TA before....sometimes I encountered a homework written in "non-english" writing (English but look more like wingdings letter). The first week of work, I was trying to be as professional as possible, spending almost 1/2 hour for a single work of that kind....but as the semester progress (more works + homework for myself), I usually cross the entire problem and left a big side note....asking them politely to fix their writing next time (or sometimes sarcasm if it's the same guy over and over again) what u guys usually do?

in shorter way, it's OK as long as: 1) you are in the different department OR you're not teaching the same class AND 2) it's a healthy relationship

Saw a topic about dating other grads....how bout an undergrad? Need you guys opinion...is that unethical? (when the undergrad is actually in the class we're TA-ing?) I've heard about some college girls dating a TA in-exchange for little "help"....I'm a normal straight guy, and I was a TA before, some of girls I taught were TOTALLY my type.... I admit I dated a girl from a class I tutored (we're both undergrads), and sometimes we got "private session" a week before an exam (no dirty mind please ). Do you guys think it also unprofessional to do such thing anyway? (specially if one is graduate and other is undergrad?)

Yes, I'm sure I have applied for it, the only "other TA application" I found was with my grad school application. It was one of the application question: "Do you want to be considered for TEaching assisstantship"? which I replied as "YES" I couldnt find that "other" application....as far as I know there are plenty of graduate student who live off assisstantship -
OK, I've read some topics here, and there are some which implied that some recruits WON'T BE notified in case there's no money aids for them. YES, those unfortunate people were just left hanging without any clue. Honestly, I'm still waiting for some refreshing news from my grad. school about my funding. (My program starts on September 2012.) The horror is on me, am I stil WAITING or already HANGING? or perhaps it's still too soon for me to worry? or is it only grad school "kindness" to prevent me from committing suicide in case they have bad news? (which I prefer to be told about the bad news ASAP, anxious can drive ppl mad sometimes!) Any thought? comment? Thank you

....my bad....forgot to include the rest of the email...my bad srsly " We would like to invite you to attend our Graduate Open House arriving in <a town in Oregon> on Thursday, March 1 through Saturday, March 3. This is will provide you with an opportunity to meet with the faculty, to identify potential research, and compete for a research or teaching assistantship. In addition, you will interact with current graduate students. The School will provide airfare, and arrangements for hotel lodging (up to two nights) at the Holiday Inn in <a town in Oregon> and transportation by a Shuttle Service to and from the airport. Several meals will also be provided, as there will be both a luncheon and a special dinner reception on Friday, March 2. The Holiday Inn provides a continental breakfast. " What u guys think?

I'm just curious, we know the cost for grad school is massive, a minimum of $25,000/yr for each student. What kind of benefits does a school gain from spending money to finance some graduate students (through TA/RA/fellowships)? To save more money from hiring additional teachers/professors? or just merely commercial/promotional step? or both? What do u guys think? For example, just imagine if there are 20 master students who're fully funded (for a $25,000 worth/year program), they have to spend at least $500,000 + $270,000 (for stipend) = $770,000/year!!!! which is a massive amount of money!

Not because I just want to put all my eggs in one basket....it cost me a LOT to put my other eggs into other "basket". I live far far away from USA, therefore it cost me quite a lot of my country currency to send an application....One US dollar = 9,500 of my money If they could tell me earlier, I can use my best judgement to send other applications to other generous companies....well, in one side, since this is my first grad. experience, I gotta make sure to spread the "eggs" even more in the future...maybe for PhD application
