  1. Thanks for getting back to me, tanzbaer. I'm actually hoping to begin a master's program, so I should be good to go without prior contact (I reached the same conclusion as you after re-reading the instructions again). By the way, is everyone listing three university choices? For some reason I was under the impression that applicants only need apply to one program, but I seem to be mistaken. (Perhaps this is for another type of DAAD scholarship.)
  2. Hello all, I was recently thinking about applying for a DAAD grant but noticed the deadline is Nov. 15. Is it too late to get started and be able to have proof of correspondence with a German university? I believe most unis here won't begin courses until Oct. 15 or so. Thanks!

  4. Hello all, I've been torn for quite on a while on whether or not it is smart to pursue a graduate degree in European politics. I recently graduated from undergrad with a double-major in International Relations and German, and I've had significant travel experience in Europe (lived in Germany as an exchange student in high school; will be moving back to Germany next year as a Fulbright English teaching assistant). I'm deeply interested in politics, and my true passion lies in transatlantic relations (e.g. US-EU politics). However, I fear that a degree in European politics is too specialized and the job market for such graduates (particularly in the States) is rather slim. I've considered applying to the following programs: Georgetown MAGES, American SIS (regional specialization in Europe), GWU (European/Eurasian Studies), LSE European Studies, and Freie Universität Berlin (International Relations). I've also thought about applying for a program in International Security with a concentration in European regional studies so as to make the degree more marketable. Any thoughts? Would I be making a foolish choice in pursuing a degree in European politics? (I'm also not an EU citizen, which would make working in an EU member state quite difficult). Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.
  5. Hello all, I'm new to the forum but am beginning to contemplate applying for graduate school this fall. I have taken a cursory glance at a few IR programs, but I do hope to narrow things down in the next few months. Currently, I'm leaning towards an MA in International Development. I have just graduated from undergrad, so my main concern is that I may not have enough work experience. Given my profile (listed below), are there specific programs that may be more lucrative to a recent graduate? Or am I competitive enough for some of the more top-notch schools? Undergrad: B.A. in Diplomacy/Global Politics and German (double-major), minor in Arabic from a public university in Ohio GPA: 3.98, summa cum laude Language Skills: German (advanced/near-native proficiency), Arabic (intermediate), French (novice) International Experience: Studied abroad in United Arab Emirates (5 months), spent a summer in Egypt (3 months), lived in Germany as an exchange student in high school (11 months) GRE: V 165 / Q 153 / AW 5.0 Relevant Work Experience: Interned at Egyptian human rights NGO (3 months), gave volunteer English courses at another Egyptian NGO (3 months), received a Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship (ETA) to Germany for the 2012-2013 academic year Quantitative Skills: Microeconomics (A+), Macroeconomics (A), Statistics (A+) Many thanks in advance!
