For what it's worth, I graduated from undergrad in 2008 with one pub., went to grad PhD for genomics/oceanography but dropped out due to poor program with full support from academic advisors funded under NSF, lived abroad as science teacher to present, and moving back to US for Ph.D. in biomed. Total publications 2, 2 in prep.

Also submitted extenuating circumstances essay to describe non-traditional background, previous challenges, and discrimination under the Defense of Marriage Act that led to my exile from the U.S. with my foreign spouse. In other words, LGBTQ friendly reviewers. Reviewer 3 made me very happy.

    Awarded/Recommended

    Reviewer 1 VG/E:
    IM:
Applicant shows a strong commitment to research studies and has applied his skills at many research locations. He has contributed to publications and is highly recommended. One thing that is not clear is how or where the student wishes to continue his research. The area is quite specialized and a potential mentor or university where the research might be conducted were not put forth. It is not unusual for students to describe where they would like to do research whether or not they have been admitted to a program. Providing information about where he plans to do graduate work would have improved this application BI: Broader impacts of pursuing [very specific topic removed] is apparent and well articulated by the applicant. The applicant also has continued to engage in teaching, including bridging communication between young students and university faculty. He has a record of engaging the community with his science. Summary:  This is an interesting research proposal from an applicant who has interest in coral reef biology, and wishes to continue his research after leaving a troubled graduate program, and moving abroad for personal reasons. What is challenging to gauge is that his past research experience is highly specialized and whether a suitable graduate program can be found to match his interests. The application would be strengthened if a university program were identied as a place of interest and some communication had been established.   Reviewer 2 E/E: IM: Proposed research plan is nicely presented and application provides documentation of laboratory potential and success in the form publications and letters of recommendation. BI:  Applicant's research has mutliple broad impacts with regard to biodiversity, ecosystems and local economies. Applicant has also been very active with regard to education of children and adults with respect to the importance of maintaining healthy coral reefs. Summary: Applicant conveys a great sense of passion and energy in his application. He is clearly committed to this work and circumstances have led him to strike a nice balance between research and education endeavors.   Reviewer 3 E/E: IM: The research plan is innovative. The candidate proposes to use modern molecular biology techniques to study coral health and the response to stress. The project is very well conceived and has the support of expert collaborators. BI: The research plan has great broad impacts by developing methods to monitor coral health and overall environmental changes. The candidate has demonstrated dedication to improving society on many fronts. He has been very active in outreach activities to the public and in particular to school children for many years. The application outlines mulitple pathways for continued outreach activities. Summary: The candidate is dedicated to science and the benet of society. He has shown perseverance in his question for science through many adverse circumstances. The letters of support are fantastic. The scientic environment is excellent. His research plan is cutting edge and strong. The examples of outreach and giving back to society are unsurpassed.

I wrote a script and used it last year   Another option is to use Page Monitor (Chrome app), since as soon as FastLane is up, the results come out!

The overall lack of structure and uncertainty that lies beyond the second year.  Experimental setbacks, publication rejections, harsh (at times) criticisms, no clear benchmarks for success, and increasingly looser guidance as you progress.  Kind of like walking through fog that thickens before it clears.  That said, it certainly toughens you up.

Maybe Meetup would be more appropriate to your needs: it allows you to join interest groups (hiking, book clubs, French literature appreciation, single professionals) and meet new people at the meet-ups.  Although not everybody single who attends these Meetups is looking for a relationship.

That it never feels like I work enough.
I have no other duty besides research, and the freedom to pick whatever topic to tackle and how much to get done is sometimes scary.

I'm sorry mate. For last six hours I ve been going trough all his past papers to assume what methodology he uses. He is very famous, very respected professor, worked for ivy,it is almost a miracle that he agreed without knowing me to take me for studentship, and I don't want to bother him too much, especially that he is a very busy man.it is why he asked to fulfil as much application as I could, his sections in application et cetera.I am really stressed about it,as from that my future really depends.I am now off from Uni, have been seriously ill,had a major surgery and he agreed without talking and seeing me in person, but just from some YouTube videos to apply to his society for funding for me.

I'm curious how the fellowship can help with networking. Would you have not networked the same way otherwise, without the fellowship? Do you say, "Hi I'm an NSF fellow". It doesn't seem like it would be something that comes up in day-to-day networking and collaboration.

I'm hopeful for the time-freedom most. It would also create some social accountability for me in doing great work. Success breeds success! I'm a long-shot though.

You cant tell the result from the email subject, afaik. In 2014, it was "2014 NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program Application Results" and sent to me at 3:06a April 1, just a few minutes after Fastlane update.

Yeah, I hope you learned something: to not jump to conclusion whenever things dont go your way...
Professors dont have to give you good grades. You either earn it or you dont, nothing has to do with how much work you do for them or how friendly they are to you. That is what I mean.

Short answer: you have violated your ethical responsibilities.

Long answer: you have violated your ethical responsibilities--but you can put the brakes on it now and salvage whatever professionalism you can until after the class is done and you two no longer have any professional relationship besides being students at the same school.

If I were you, I would not bring this to your professor. I would simply follow up in a text (read: in writing somewhere; start creating a paper trail in your favor) that considering the professional relationship you two are in as TA--Student, you think it would be best to put a stop to any and all romantic interactions. This, hopefully, should put you in the clear to assess her work again.

Reaching out to schools of interest regarding veteran student benefits too.  There may be additional funding, discounts, and internship opportunities available.  If they don't know, find someone at the school who would.  Also, do not take an answer of "we don't" unless it comes from a university staff manager.  I got screwed over on my first semester tuition because student workers told me there wasn't a benefit that was available.

You can't easily buy in Boulder, but if you live 20-30 min out of Boulder it might be possible.  The housing market exploded since pot was legalized.  I went to school there and have family living there. I can't afford to move back now... unless I live with family.

ASU gave me a stipend guaranteed for the first academic year, where renewal is contingent upon resources and satisfactory progress.  No guaranteed summer funding, but there are opportunities to assist faculty and TA. Full tuition remission and health insurance as long as I am registered for 6 credits per term (fees not included).

I plan to contact current PhD students to see how that has worked for them.

That is pretty close to what I did too.  The two schools I have been admitted to, the faculty I spoke to are matched as my advisers now.  Still waiting on a school that doesn't send notifications out until mid March.

    Hi All,

I am planning to study for a master's degree in USA in the field of Human Computer Interaction (generally taught via Computer Science of Information studies).
I am an international student and I don't have a US citizenship, therefore I am looking for external scholarships/fellowships/grants. The problem is that there are "tons" of sites for scholarships' search out there, and one must focus in order to achieve success. I want to request your advice in finding the best (lets say 10 best) sites for the above purpose. I will be happy to hear about good sites from your own experience and not just about the results received after typing "10 best scholarship sites" in Google.

    Many thanks in advance  .

Cookie reacted to fuzzylogician in Always full funding during PhD at top private schools?
Business schools and PhD programs are very different beasts. Business schools (as in, MBAs) are something you pay for and you do as an investment in your future. They are not usually funded by the school, though some people might get their work to cover their tuition. PhD programs, especially the ones at top schools, will fund their students. This would include the tuition, some reasonable stipend, and health insurance. Usually the offer is for X number of years and it's highly advisable to finish the PhD within that time. If your funding runs out, different schools handle it differently. At some you could take a leave of absence to work on your research without getting paid, then come back to defend. At some, you could be hired as an instructor and that helps pay some tuition and fees, perhaps get you health insurance. Some schools have reduced tuition for students who are done with everything but their dissertation. At yet others, there is not much to do and you'd have to pay full tuition. If you attend a private school, that could be in the 30-40K range a semester, and maybe 10-20K (or more!) for public schools, which are all pretty expensive. If you are concerned about not finishing on time, there are two kinds of questions to ask. First, how long to people usually take to graduate (also: what percentage of students graduate vs. drop out), and second, what happens if you need more time than the funding offer is for? The schools you're applying to should have answers to both of these questions.
