Would I be missing out by not getting a BSW prior to a MSW?
TLC replied to christian121's topic in Social Workers Forum
I don't know what plan you are under with the Cal Vet tuition waiver. If you are under Plan A without any income restrictions (therefore not restricting you geographically) I feel that your possibilities are endless. Any reccomendations should be based on your interests. Macro or Micro? Are you interested in a particular population? What are your goals after graduation? -

Did you mean to say that you will be fine being admitted to an MSW program 'without' a BSW? -
You are very welcome. I hope that you keep us posted of come back if you have any other questions or concerns

I am still a student yet wanted to respond. I would begin networking immediatley at your field placement (if you like it) and attend the career fairs/alumni networking events that your program offers. Plenty of folks in my program began receiving job offers in Feb/March/April and they graduated at the end of April. I would also plan to get your LSW as soon as you can. I hope to do the same as I get married a month after I graduate and I want to get it out of the way

When I broached this subject with USC years ago, I was told that the answer was no because it would be diffifcult to ensure a field placement. I countered and asked if I could have a field placement on a military base and they said it may be possible. I just went over to the website and the answer remains the same. Provisions may only be made for active duty military (providing a placement is available). I would venture to say that other programs would have similar responses. Let's hope others chime in.

Can a field placement be too dangerous, or am I being stupid?

Best of luck Little Darlings -
Nightwolf, you always have rich and in depth responses. Maybe the OP will come back and elaborate on these slums and ghettos
-
I wondered if the OP was a troll and the whole "ghetto and slums" comment made me think so even more.

Kristopher, thank you so very much!

I think you can get away with only Rubin and Babbie. We had that one and another one and I cant remember what it was. I do remember that we didn't open it once. Does your program have a class called Evaluation in SW Practice (or something similar) or do you test out of both of them? "Building on the concepts and principles from SW 441 this course prepares students in basic principles of practice and program evaluation and their application to social work practice in agency settings. Using their agency settings as laboratories, students learn the major approaches to evaluation (needs assessment, process, and outcome) with attention to the struggles, tensions, and ambiguities related to current evaluation models and agency demands for evaluation"
-
Perhaps ask an advanced year student if you could borrow their Rubin and Babbie? I rented mine but several folks in my cohort kept it. I don't know of other resources to help you. Like Jentse said, if you buy it now and study, you can sell it come August when other students are looking for it

Is it worth going for a bachelor's degree in social work?

I dont have much to add however, I am a huge advocate of CLEP tests. I am glad the TheCrow mentioned them -

MSW Field Internships and Medical Marijuana in California
TLC replied to telos321's topic in Social Workers Forum
I don't know if this really answers your question.., When I was the Urinalysis Program Coordinator for the government we asked the people providing to list all medications that they were on so that when they "popped" it would be explained. I am not well versed with medical marijuana and everything that it entails. My thought is that if you have a bonafide prescription from a medical provider then it should be able to be explained and you should be fine. Please forgive my ignorance if it is not prescribed. -

OP, I would urge you to really check your biases and preconceived notions these last few months before you begin your program. You are not alone in this, we all have them. When I initially read this post, I read it bearing in mind your famous post on this website and the negative feelings that I had toward it (i disagreed and took offense to a lot of what you said). I had to step back and objectively consider what you were asking here in this post. Again, we all are fallible and have biases and I caution you to reflect on them now. When you deal with future clients they WILL rear their heads. I dealt with a particular person in my program who is very anti military and their wanton hate for it spewed over into their interactions with me as a veteran. It is very hurtful to be at the recieving end of somebody's ignorance/intolerance/_________. I dont think you are being "stupid". I think that your perception of severe mental illness may be skewed by popular culture and the horrendous events in the news as a previous poster mentioned. Just like the person in my program thought that all veterans behaved like x,y, and z. It couldn't be further from the case. Again, use this summer to reflect about what it will be like working with folks who are unlike yourself. You will be challenged in more ways than one and it will be uncomfortable. I can only imagine that you (if you took this job) would be timid around your prospective clients (because you are a small girl and they have mental illness and surely folks with mental illness are violent. Correlation does not mean causation). They will pick up on that. I actually think this would be a great placement for you because it places you a bit out of your comfort zone. I went into my first placement and I was ABSOLUTELY out of my comfort zone. You are actually excited about the work you could do at this placement (i was not). Now that my placement is over I wouldn't change the experience for anything in the world. -
It's too late on a Friday afternoon for me to call admissions offices and ask this question, so I thought I would try here. My hope is that somebody could offer insight or maybe SocialWorkPHD will happen upon this thread and offer her/his opinion. I would like to take electives this summer in another MSW program. So far, my internet searches have shown that non-matriculating course offerings are HBSE, Policy, Research, and Racism. I have already taken these and am interested in Social Action courses or Mental Health electives. I will call around on Monday to see if this is a possibility, but wanted to present it to the forum to see if anybody could provide insight. Thanks in advance. For all of you who may read this and are still waiting on decisions/ financial aid packages/ etc from your programs remember: “The secret of patience is doing something else in the meanwhile” –Unknown

CSU's submitted applications & waiting for decisions
TLC replied to MSW03's topic in Social Workers Forum
I applied to SDSU last cycle as soon as they started accepting applications. I submitted EVERYTHING that very first day (OCT I think?) and heard back in March. I will check and give you specific dates if you want. I was overzealous and applied at all of my schools as soon as they accepted applications -
Gummybear... Another volunteer opportunity is to volunteer at Stand Down. Its an annual three day event hosted by VA's all over ( I always did the San Diego and OC ones when I was AD and even when I was a Reservist). They have medical and mental health tents and three large mobile dental units. There are SW'rs in the mental health tent. Its catered to homeless veterans and providing them with a wealth of resources and transitional/permanent housing. Its TOUGH work but very rewarding. Forgive me if this is old information to you.

Gummybear, I did my work study with HUD VASH and HCHV at the VA in Mission Valley for over a year. So there are paid opportunities to volunteer. Again... PM me if you'd like for the details. I think I mentioned that my fiances submarine changed homeports from the west coast to the east coast so I had to apply to 5 schools out here instead of going with the 5 schools I applied to in CA. I wanted SDSU so bad because it is SO inexpensive ( I am a CA resident and have the GI Bill). I was so sad to tell them I couldn't attend after I got my acceptance. They have placements at the military bases and many of the VA's, Vet Centers, Clinics, GPD's etc. Its a phenomenal program. I went to the information session and am happy to tell you all I learned if your interested.
-
Gummybear... I am a HM2 and was in your situation last year. A change of homeport moved us from San Diego to Boston but I used to be hellbent on USC and then shifted to SDSU. I dont know if your using your GI Bill or still AD but I found doing my work study the the VA to be a tremendous networking experience. I too have experience as a DAPA and SAPR and that coupled with other collaterals got me accepted into all of my programs. I am interviewing next month at the VA for my second year field placement. I'm happy to elaborate on my journey if youd like to via PM or on the open forum. Cant wait to hear some good news from you!

AirForceOne, I was active duty when I began looking at MSW programs as well.As the PP stated, it may behoove you to look at part-time programs, as online programs require a field practicum. Also, keep in mind the amount of time left at your current duty station, deployment possibility, etc. The navy has a program that would allow you to leave AD to pursue a degree then return to AD as enlisted, does the AF?. There are also officer programs. I understand that you may know about all of this. PM me of you have any specific questions regarding any of it. I'm more than happy to help.

From the SDSU information session I remember they said they were looking for at least a 4 on the writing portion of the GRE. The other portions do not matter. If you have at least a 3.5 GPA your at least in the running. They said GPA is 50% of the application. The personal statement is the next most important piece. I remember mentally checking off things in my head because I was obsessed with getting in there. Your going to want to have stellar references too. I cant remember off the top of my head how many applications they receive each year. I want to give you a number but I am not certain. If I find it in my old notes I will pass it on. Hopefully current/past students or others who were admitted will chime in as well
-
They accept around 45 regular full time students. Even less extended three and four year students. A few Ph.D students and some dual degree program students. I applied for the full time two year program and thats why those numbers in particular stood out to me
