  1. oh my god that pun was so bad it hurt my spleen
  2. But it will always be a human's-eye-view of insects. So why pretend that we can have insect-oriented philosophy? It's just a person talking for an [insect/object/animal] I don't think Philosophy is pointless. I think certain kinds of philosophical thinking are pointless. That's how you keep philosophy sharp, by thinking critically about how one does philosophy. Sure, people can study different things from me. But if I think those things are fundamentally flawed in their methodology, gonna go right ahead and say so, thanks.
  3. clearly the program decided to give cabinfever all their money because cabinfever was the best goddamn MA student they had ever seen. Unfortunately, all the money they had only totaled $24,000.
  4. So animal studies/posthumanists discuss how their efforts are impossible. What else is new? Philosophy does that all the time, and it leads us nowhere. That's why things like phenomenology were invented, to analyze and describe things in a way that can actually be useful... or maybe useful isn't the word, but at least not so circular and pointless. In response to the idea of literature and mathematics: Didn't they already do this a long time ago? Like for example in Lewis Carroll?
  5. everyone is so jealous of cabin fever's MA funding
  6. WE SHOULD RENAME THEM THE POST-HUMANITIES!!!! MAYBE THE ALIENITIES?!
  7. Yes, all that new technology that we've developed to turn us into insects and allow us to communicate with aliens has really rejuvenated the humanities!
  8. ball state hahahahahahahha it's called BALL state!
  9. Oh please, that's not true. I think some people say that in order to make their academic goals seem more valiant.
  10. Just fine means different things to different people. It depends what you want to do with your life, and also how competitive of a person you are. And how cheaply you're willing to live.
  11. Am I the only one who feels like all the stuff that's "hot" is deeply uninteresting and also somewhat pandering to the outsider's view that humanities in themselves are unimportant, therefore they must imitate the sciences in order to be valued and taken seriously? I mean I like the idea of post-humanism in theory, but I feel like there are two fundamental problems with it. 1. we can't actually exit the human perspective, and 2. it leads to a lot of prostelytizing veganism. maybe I just have a general issue with the nature of humanities scholarship. It can feel so vapid sometimes.
  12. It probably depends. As said in a different thread, rhet/comp and literature are two very different fields. It also depends if you're aiming for a top-50 or a top-5.
  13. Yeah i have to agree that getting tenure track in rhetoric and composition is a whole different animal from tenure track literature jobs, especially at R1 schools. But I feel like the dreamy image of professorial life doesn't usually encompass an R1 school, it's more of a small liberal arts college tucked away in some scenic meadow
  14. I wanted to apply to SFState last year but my professors advised me against it because they thought, for an academic career, it would look bad on my CV.
  15. Are the cornell SCT seminar topics any indication? Because if so, then disability studies, ecology of things (ecocriticism + thing studies?), postcolonial + anthropocene, and design theory, applying cognitive science to literary criticism... I present these things without comment
  16. but outside of california SFState does not have a good reputation
  17. why does everyone always accuse people of trolling? It's so unfair. I think this poster is legit
  18. have any of your professors ever told you that you have a "vocation" for this stuff?
  19. Just look at the document listing all the other funding packages in the funding thread. You don't need to be optimistic to see that it gets a lot better than UT Austin
  20. UT Austin's funding sounds to me like the opposite of competitive.
  21. Everything. I would do absolutely everything differently
  22. I wasn't taking a stand either way, just finding it interested that the term "progressive" was used in that context. I think everyone should learn every language! More language all around!
  23. You wish I were fond of you. See how I used the subjunctive mood in that sentence? Most people wouldn't have done that!!!
