I really don't think Toni Morrison is a good writer at all.

Just to qualify my statement, the canon as I understand it starts with Homer and ends with Modernism.

Fall 2014 applicants??
Fishbucket replied to sugoionna's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
In my personal case, I've been thinking a lot about whether or not I should stick this out and keep trying. I've spoken with a lot of my professors about this. They keep pushing me to re-apply. I find that very encouraging, since I figure that the people I'm asking for advice and recommendations would sooner tell me to give up and leave them alone, than stuff me full of false hopes and waste everyone's time. If there's really a question of whether re-applying is a good idea, don't you guys think that there's some objective real world sources that can help you sort this out? Doesn't it seem like professors would be good barometers for this kind of thing? -
For everyone who is making this point: those things didn't join the canon overnight. They joined it because of a certain critical consensus, over generations and generations. CONTEMPORARY Pop culture (which is what I was referring to in my post) cannot be canonical for this reason. There are things that are popular now that will eventually be taught and read in the same way that the canon is today. But that doesn't happen overnight, and it shouldn't.

Fall 2014 applicants??

I don't believe either statement is 100% true. But then again, what is truth? -
It's not the popular culture has no value or shouldn't be studied, it's that it shouldn't be canonical. That's a big difference. Studying pop culture is already a thing.

Sorry, my bad. I sent that to you. -

I've revised my opinion of multiple re-applications. The only way that applying a million times in a row would ever really be a terrible waste is if you had stopped living in the meanwhile. But trying repeatedly for a very difficult goal is just what you have to do to achieve a very difficult goal. Almost all of my professors and TAs had to apply more than once before they were accepted to grad school. -

It's interesting that you called it "progressive" of your parents to start your education in the language of the colonial opressor before teaching you the languages indigenous to your land. Edit: this is just an observation that I literally find "interesting." The view of progressive in India is basically the inverse of what is considered progressive in Catalonia, the Basque country, Galicia and South America, which is what I've been studying. Enough with the downvotes. -
That document is great. The kind of info you never hear about from the school before you apply.

What on earth does this mean? Just curious

I think the canon has a purpose. It gives you a background for all the major literary reference points of a few thousand years. It doesn't mean I particularly like everything in it or that I think we should maintain the same narrow focus going forward, but it has a purpose.

Fall 2014 applicants??

I haven't heard any decision from CUNY post-interview, so I'm just predicting doom. It seems pretty late for good news. -

So yeah I'm joining this bandwagon. Gonna apply again. I don't know where yet, but I will figure it out. Sigh sigh sigh. -
I have exactly zero point zero zero zero hope of getting off my waitlist, so I've just resigned myself to applying again. I even thought up a new topic for my next statement of purpose. Though it will probably change a lot in the intervening 9-10 months. Next time around, I suppose I'll apply to more schools.

CUNY or Re-apply?
Fishbucket replied to Fishbucket's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
I don't like everyone. But I tend to simply avoid the people I dislike. If they seek me out (as girl who wears glasses did repeatedly over private messages) then I try my best to honestly and bluntly turn them aside. But sometimes that doesn't work. She sent me a message asking me to stop downvoting her posts. I'm only making this public because recently she's referred to our private conversation as me "spewing hatespeech" and I'm really sick of this weird slander. I would post all the messages on here, but they're from my other account which is now closed. -
Just saw this on a different grad student forum and I thought I'd post it here, since the mods here don't really moderate, well, at all: Hi all, I'm a fairly laid back mod, but will not tolerate any pleading to decline offers. It doesn't matter how the process works on the school's side, I'm sure there's lots of variation. The fact is that the April 15th deadline is there for a reason and I don't want anyone doing anything they might regret from pressure on here. Campus visit days haven't happened, information that might be relevant might come to light prior to April 15th (suppose your dream school burns down or three top faculty announce moves), and not all offers are out... there is no way anyone can know for sure that their choice now will be the same on April 15th or whenever they choose to make it. After April 15th, any remorse is your own fault, until then, no one should be trying to make it theirs.

If you say so. I suppose it's better to be like you and openly berate other people whose posting history you don't seem to fully know or understand? -

I had formulas? I didn't realize. I thought I was just making random guesses. I was right about Two Espressos, but without checking the actual thread I have no idea if I guessed any other ones correctly. Of course, we can't properly tally until the season is over. You never even posted on the thread, so I definitely didn't tell you anything about where (I guessed) you would be accepted.
