  1. I was the kid drawing cartoons and scribbling poetry instead of taking notes. Not really nerdy but definitely weird/socially awkward.
  2. I had a dream last night that I won CGS. In Caliban's words, "and then, in dreaming, The clouds methought would open, and show riches Ready to drop upon me; that, when I waked, I cried to dream again.”
  3. Because I'm only 23 with another 4-5 years of school ahead of me, people haven't been bugging me about babies yet. My husband and I are set on not having babies, although the possibility of adopting an older child has been thrown around as something we might do in the distant future. The kicker is that we got married at 21, and usually people who get married that young are intent on having children young too. As soon as we have extra income, we're going to blow it on travelling Can't wait!
  4. I should have arranged to have my letter sent to relatives in Ottawa. Could have saved myself a couple of days of waiting. But I guess it would be weird if I e-mailed sshrc to change my address AGAIN.
  5. The person whom sshrc followed should do it. sshrc likes them.
  6. Hmmm...I have a feeling it's just poor word choice on Carleton's part. Hoping I'm wrong and that we hear soon.
  7. Thinking about hitting the liquor store so I'm ready when the results come. Good=champagne. Bad=whiskey.
  8. I think they'll be mailed out either this thurs or next thurs. Has to be right before a weekend I hope I get an e-mail from my school's graduate award assistant like I did last year for the MA sshrc.
  9. E-mailed SSHRC to change my mailing address yesterday. I'm leaving this apartment at the end of the month and don't want to risk missing the letter. Sigh. Somehow the idea of the letter being sent to my in-laws' house depresses me (almost as much as spending the summer at my in-laws' house!)
  10. Went to check and got a message about the system being temporarily down due to technical difficulties. Edit: just realized that I was trying to access Research Portal. I can still log on to the "portfolio" page, though "there is nothing to display"
  11. It seems that the doctoral fellowships are soon going to be 25x3 instead of 20x4. Can't find anything about winners being determine at the institutional level, though. http://www.sshrc-crsh.gc.ca/news_room-salle_de_presse/latest_news-nouvelles_recentes/talent_program_renewal-compte_rendu_du_programme_talent-eng.aspx#a2
  12. This time last year, I was stalking the 2013/2014 SSHRC thread and thinking, "man, next April is going to be a looong month." I was right.
  13. Commenter is a conservative christian, so your cynicism is probably appropriate.
  14. "Does your husband know about this?" (After making a "moving across the country for grad school" status on FB).
  15. I had a dream last night that SSHRC tweeted it would be mailing out results this Wednesday. I actually checked the twitter page first thing this morning to confirm that the dream was not, in fact, prophetic. Oh wells.
  16. I'm mostly feeling glad that I managed to get a CGS-M before they changed the process. I applied during the 1st year of my 2-year program and was competing with what I assume was a much smaller pool of applicants. This year, it seems like most of the school's quota was used for recruiting new students. I was surrounded by bad news on Tuesday
  17. I received an offer of an OGS from Waterloo a few days ago, which I turned down. I didn't apply for it.
  18. Because even if I'm not guaranteed an academic job in the end, at least I'll have a decent income for the next 4-6 years, doing something I enjoy and am good at. I plan on treating it like a 40hr/week job.
  19. I've never shared an article from Buzzfeed or Upworthy I've never had my nails done or eyebrows (or anything else) waxed. I've never been on a cruise or stayed at a resort. I've never cleaned my oven.
  20. I'm feeling a bit spiteful towards the CGS-M applicants today. In my day, masters students had to wait a whole month after the doctoral applicants got their results...
  21. Just remembered that I'm going to be out of town for the 3rd week of April. Debating whether I should appoint someone to come and open the letter for me if it arrives during that time, or whether I should just wait. Last year, when I won the MA SSHRC, I received an email from my school's graduate awards assistant. Not sure whether I can expect the same this year, since I will be switching schools for the PhD.
  22. Checked last year's threads, and it looks like SSHRC applicants received their results a full 4 weeks after NSERC applicants...if the same thing happens this year, it puts us at the end of April as originally forecasted.
  23. Is anyone else tired of having to explain SSHRC all the time? I wish I could vent to my husband or my parents about the waiting game without having to explain, for the umpteenth time, what SSHRC is.
  24. From a student in my MA program: "So you got into [school A]? I hear that they have lots of funding." Me: "Yes, much more than [school B]." Student: "That's because school B is good enough that people will go without great funding. School A has to pay big dollars to convince people to go." I was speechless. Even if ranking was my only consideration, school A STILL ranks well above school B on every list that I've ever seen. This person actually thinks that less funding = better school.
